Student Council The Student Council, the governing body of Highland Park High School, has worked hard this year to keep ninety per cent of the students buying War Stamps and Bonds so that our school may fly the Minute Man Flag. Other activities of this group are the sponsoring of the annual Junior-Senior Prom, football dances, various contests and assemblies, the spring elections, scrap drives, and assisting in P.T.A., Dad's Club, and Red Cross Drives. Park's Kollege of All Kinds of Knowledge -known in some parts as the National Honor Society. Hi-Y Barkgrouuu' Our Highland Park Hi-Y club was first organized in thc 1922-1923 school year under the direction of Mr. Jack Whittington of the Y.M.C,A. Fourteen boys were the orig- inal charter members at the time. The club has grown since then into an excellent organization for character building and varied activities. In 1913 their basic purpose, to create, maintain and ex- tend throughout the school and community high standards of Christian character, was adopted by the National Hi-Y Fellowship. Prexeut Status Today the largest Hi-Y organization in the United States is our Highland Park club, which has three hundred and twenty-five active members. The basic program for the year centers around Christian Character Building, Clean Sportsmanship, Vocational Guid- ance Talks, and Magic Entertainment. The social welfare work is generously contributing to the Red Cross, the War Chest Fund, and other big projects, both local and national. Besides having interesting pro- grams every Tuesday morning, the Hi-Lites Club is one of the busiest in H.P.H.S. This year the welfare work and war work consisted of sending four hundred dozen cookies to Ashburn General Hospital at Thanksgiving, three hundred books and toys to the Parkland Children's Ward, three hundred games to Ashburn Hospital at Christmas. To be a member one must have lived out- side the United States for six months or more. When a person is admitted to the club, he feels that he has really accomplished a great deal as it is indeed an honor. Those who wish to get into the Quill and Scroll have to be at least a junior, in the upper third of their class, and outstanding in Work on the Bagpipe or-Higlolamfer. The club also encourages beginners in the journalistic field. V Travel Club The project of the Travel Club this year is entertainment. Their biggest event is the entertainment show for the veterans of World War Il at Ashburn General Hospital, McKinney, Texas. While several members of the club give a regular stage show, others sit and talk with the boys. Also Scrapbooks containing jokes and pictures are made by certain committees of the club. These are taken to the hospitals with each entertainment show. In the club meetings the less personal, but more interesting excerpts of overseas letters are read to the club members. By these letters the Travel Club goes to foreign lands while remaining in Highland Park High School. The letters might be called tickets to the world and they come from all over the world. Art Club Many years ago, in 1936, when most of the current Scotties were in grammar school, a group of Scots, under the supervision of Miss Dial, organized an Art Club. This Club has grown with the years and is now proudly doing a very important work at Highland Park. In this time of strife the club has decorated our halls with many stirring patriotic posters. When the Student Council wishes to stress any one of its projects, in particular, it is the Art Club which furnishes visual inspiration for the student body. During the Sixth War Loan Drive, the Art Club furnished a Poster which kept the entire student body informed on the amount of sales made at Highland Park. Even though the entire team played good football, Elliott, Eldredge, and Moxley were out- standing. The Scots showed still more power the next week by defeating the Masonic Home Masons 42-0. Waco defeated the Hi Park lads the follow- ing week by 21-20, which proved the Tigers had one of the best lines iri the State. The Scots came back in the next game to outplay and thoroughly whip Sherman to the tune of 25-0, with Walker standing out. In the Wichita Falls game Coaches Russell, and Morgan had our boys open a passing attack which completed 20 out of 28 attempts. Walker to Elliott and Clark were two combina- tions almost unbeatable. The game ended with a victory for the Scots, 34-0. Marshall came to Hi Park the following week, to give the Scots a scare, but after a while the Scotties stopped their star, Gillory, and defeated them 32-19. The boys from Denton com- pleted a beautiful pass to gain their only score. HI PARK 38-ARLINGTON 0 This was a muddy game with Tenison and Rem- bert playing great football. Robin Walker who splashed the first one over was followed by Boogie Rembert, Pete', Weatherford, Pinoc- che Norton, 'Kingn Wallace, and Big Bill Elliott, while Friday', Kirby parted the uprights. HI PARK 73-MCKINNEY O Walker and Bradley celebrated this Turkey Day game by gaining four and three tallies apiece, re- spectively, to be trailed by Wallace, P'Simer, and Eldredge, lugging over one each. However, these boys had nothing on little Kirby who, besides scoring a touchdown, kicked seven extra points. HI PARK 414SULPHUR SPRINGS 0 Using nearly all power plays, starring Elliott and Rembert, the Scots beat the Wildcats. Out- standing on the line were Tenison, Wales, Clark, Davis, Smith, Euqua, and Fikes. Though the Scots pushed the Lions all over the field, bad breaks kept them from scoring. HI PARK 20-SUNSET 0 Proving that the Golden Avalanche had the better of the two lines, Walker had little trouble in running or passing when he wished. He ran for two tallies himself, and tossed the pigskin to Clark for the remaining one. It wasn't until the final minutes of the game that the Bisons managed to gain their only first down. The excellent teamwork of every person on the team made this one of the best games the Scotties played all season. San Angelo didn't even threaten until the last quarter when playing our fourth string. HI PARK 7-PORT ARTHUR 20 For the first time in the history of Highland Park Hi, the silk stocking boys played in the State Finals, only to be defeated by a much heavier team. Duke and Fuqua, along with the entire team, played extremely good football. Very close to pay-dirt on four occasions, the Plaidsmen couldnlt give the final punch until that reliable team of Walker to Clark tallied our only score of the game. Basketball The Hi Park cagers, led by Coach Bruce Jeffers, opened the basketb'll scacon by playing Paschal, the destined champions. Although we lost that game, we played well. Bill Torn scored 20 of the 26 points made by the Scotties. We were downed again by Paschal after hav- ing been deieated by Forney and Forest. In the next two g'mcs we downed North Dallas 29-28, and Adamson 29-19. In the first game of a double header with Waco in our gym, the score was 26-23 in their favor, Hi Park taking the honors 48-37 in the second battle. i l Page One H um! wel Greenville was tough. ln the first of our district games the plaidsmen drove over Sulphur Springs, Arlington, and McKinney. We walloped Denton with a score of 29-253 however, in our last district game of the season they trimmed us to the tune of 33-31. Regardless of this defeat we gloried in the light of our third consecu- .- Basketball tive district championship. Midway in the district games the Scots bowed in both tussles to the Waco club with scores of 30-19, and 34-27, With a continued streak of had luck, we were mauled 39-26 by Greenville in the bi-district play-off, but we led the Lions all the way in the second of the series V for Victory only to have them rally and beat us 25-21. So, in tribute to our team, here's hate off to those demons of perspi- ration, work, and good-sportsmam ship. Bernd During the school year of 1944-45 the Hi Park band has again maintained its reputation as a superior organization and a busy one. Among its outstanding activities have been performances at assemblies, P.T.A. and Dads Club programs, pep rallies, trips to football games, notably the Austin game, programs at Fair Park, Hockaday, the military review at Love Field, and the annual concert at N.T.A.C. In the annual Greater Dallas solo and ensemble contest the band boys won seventy first division medals and nine second division medals, while the nearest competitor Won a total of forty-three. The band continued its record of excellence by winning il one-plus rating at the state band contest at Waco. Seventy-one first division medals and ten second division medals were won by solo and ensemble contestants. In the January all-city inspection by Colonel Ackerman, the P. M. S. Sl T., the Highlander band with a hundred per cent grade ranked highest in the city. All members with an A average in band are rewarded with H letters.
