She devotes her time to serving the high school in several ca- pacities such as administrator of the summer school, sponsor of the Recreation League, and Adviser to the cheerleaders and to the Senior Class. It is in recognition and appreciation of her vitality and devotion that the Class of 1967 dedicates its ALBADOME to Mrs. Stock- man. aavvsttrt S. 1 5 Dr. Melvin L. Michaels Principal :5 - LFOS Mr. ustin E. Lepine Assistant Principal To the Class of 1967 Dear Graduates: I envy you. The world you are about to enter will extend millions of miles beyond the reaches your parents knew. The wealth of the oceans will be yours to harvest in ways unknown today. Knowl- edge in every held will be so increased as to stun the imagination and produce radical changes in your lives. All this superabun- dance will be yours to take and enjoy in the years following your graduation. For all this I envy you. The world unfortunately has a pendulum quality. What it gives in bounty it takes away in problems. The world now is filled with far too many unsolved problems, unfortunate people, and inhu- man relationships. Your parents, lives have been filled with peo- ple fearing people and nations opposing nations. All this tragical- ly might possibly be yours to endure also. What I wish for you is that the education you have received in your high school might be a beginning to help you gain all the wonderful riches of your world. At the same time I fervently hope that you will be able to develop the powers to alleviate, or if pos- sible, eliminate the problems, the suspicions and the hatreds that exist inside ourselves, inside other people, and inside nations. I wish you happiness, good health, peace, and contentment for all the years following your graduation. Yours truly, Melvin L. Michaels Principal To the Class of 1967: Each year as classes reach graduation you wonder what the fu- ture will bring both for them and for future students of Highland Park High School. The complexities of our modern world continue to astound me. Educational advances continue to appear at unbelievable rates. May you keep your balance and enjoy the fruits of your hard work for many years to come. ' The future can be a wonderful one if you continue to apply your- selves and build solid character, honesty, reliability, and loyalty. May the years ahead be inspiring, challenging, and successful. Sincerely, Austin E. Lepine Assistant Principal 6 l 1 June, 1967 Dear Seniors, Your days as a high school student are fast approaching an end. In retrospect, I hope all of you can say, These have been good days. I shall always cherish themf, If, during your high school years, you have learned the important meaning of self-reliance, integrity, perse- verance, self respect, and respect for others, you will find yourself blessed with a rudimentary understanding of some of the major elements that determine one's success in life. The values you hold as a young adult will form the basis of your life. It is important that you pause at this crucial time to ask yourself if your present values are worthy of your highest instincts and goals. We have appreciated the opportunity to work with you and for you. We do not consider that our work is done when you leave us. We will continue to support and en- courage you to the level of our ability. Cordially yours, Kenneth L. MacKenzie Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth L. P-4 5 l I Seniors ' Seniors, to a large degree,' are re- sponsible for the smooth running of the school. They are at the headsof the school's organizations, clubs, and activi- ties. With more experience than under- classmen, they are oftenicalled upon to represent the school in various capacities. They thusreceive recognition and credit. But being the limelight, seniors are of- ten criticized for what they do. Many people are quick to find fault with se- niors, never realizing that seniors are un- der pressure from many sides. Those who criticize will one day realize that being a senior means more than merely assuming those precious senior privi- leges. Seniordome holds many re- sponsibilities and pressures, as well as privileges and rewards. Alberta Angela Alban Stevan N. Albert James Joseph Alessi Bert I.B.M. The long and arduous journey, the voyage through four years, began as it ended, with excitement and anticipation. A brick building suddenly assumed the qualities of a ship, a vessel that transports its passengers from one place to a destination, that offers much to enlighten, to frighten, to change. Much was offered. Much was taken. Some was given. We began the first year as the little people, seek- ing our positions in the myriad of activities, as the journey speeded forward. Nearly every facet of ev- ery talent found its niche, as the gridiron called some and grease paint others. Whether the result was scoring points or achieving applause, the larger goal was always in sight, that of teamwork, de ication, and growth. The secret of joy and personal growth Lies in the interaction of the group. Many groups were assembled in order to secure these goals. For some the job was to produce a winning team in basketball, baseball, football, or track, or a winning team of another sort in dra- matics, music, debate. But every man is an indi- vidual who must often work by himself and learn to think and act for himself. Being important to the group mankind Lies in the betterment of the mind. However important the group is, we realized that scholarship and knowledge are often individual efforts. To be able to study alone and to develop the capacity for thinking alone were of prime im- portance. Thus we studied and gathered know- edge. But we also gained knowledge of people through looking inward towards ourselves and outward towards others. Many of us learned in these ways, those who did not found it difficult to keep aiioat. During the freshman year we lost a President, and therein our maturity and emotion were tested and strengthened. We saw produced on our stage the finest musical play in the history of the theatre. fHow appropriate it was to present My Fair Lady in our school.j As June a proachedg we turned thoughts to summer and algo bid farewell to the principal-captain we had barely an occasion to now, Then, on we sailed to the second year. As sophomores we entered the awkward stage. We were no longer the youngest and given considera- tions. Sugar-coatedness all but disappeared. To a greater extent we became faced with the sobering and maturing problem of keeping afloat. Timing became essential to our activities, as we assumed varsity positions and featured roles. A list of two hundred names, not arranged in al- phabetical order, appeared important to most. But class rank could not assume too great an impor- tance. There were other tests of our qualities which were offered to us in the form of new vistas which opened. Chorus became a part of the lives of some of us. while Band and Varsity Football led a large fraction of us across the field. Our dramat- ic productions employed the talents of an over- whelming number. We inherited the wind and helped Annie get her gun. We tackled, rebounded, and swung in our attempts to direct our teams to victory. All of these activities concealed from us the fact that our journey was speeding on. Obliviously, we were reaching the point of no return midway through our adventure-the junior year. Shocked and amazed, we look up and see That time has passed, and there are we Midway through our journey's course. The junior year brought new responsibilities. Our first was as buddies to the new freshmen, as we showed them through the halls we had grown to know so well. Then it was on to organizing our class by selecting officers, and thus realizing the power to the woman. When the Eternal He Created she, A political force was destined to be. Somehow the junior year was so busy that its one hundred and eighty days passed, impossible as it is, faster than in other years. We sailed through the fall and another championship and senior play. A Funny Thing happened on the stage, as vulgarity was turned into fun. Ten juniors lighted their candles and were honored by the school for their combination of qualities. Happiness of an- other sort was shared by many on a rainy night at Bali Hai. The Night climaxed weeks of planning and work, and lessened the academic tensions by turning our interests toward socialization. Here again our journey was teaching us a vital lesson. A social creature man must be. And how in heart and mind he grows Shows In personality. We began to realize that anyone who thinks that a journey will take an effortless course is foolhardy. Work is essential for success and even earnest effort does not always bring the desired results. Success does not appear only through the success- ful completion of a task, but also in rising from the fall of a failure. A fool, would say Cliche! Clichelv One wise Cin soothj Would know the truth. A serious matter which might determine the paths of our future was at hand on that May Day when many spent several analogous hours working with the College Boards, for only the first time. Politics loomed large on the scene when we were faced with the responsibility of selecting school officers. Unfortunately many regarded such a responsibility as a joke. The world situation caused us to turn our eyes outward. Daily we heard of young men serving to protect liberties we often took for granted. To think that some were risking death for us proved a sobering thought. As the thermometer rose and summer filled the air, it seemed an impossible chore to prepare for those final exams. Our journey was passing through a dark storm in order to arrive at a sunny destination, seniordom. But the sunniness of the destination proved rather dubious. Our ship was taking us through the last year, which proved to be anything but smooth sailing. For many reasons. Our football team, successful in its first encounter, learned that winning is not everything or the only thing. Our smug little attitude of HThey'll come throughi' was shaken, since we lost more than we won. So we didn't Beat M6tuChCI1 and were not Central Jersey Champions. Some learned an important lesson. In defeat there is victory, albeit a dark victory. For us as seniors the journey began to lead into many new and exciting experiences. We learned that a ship will not steer itself. It needs guidance and leadership, or it will run amuck. For this rea- son we took over the steering of the myriad of ac- tivities we once viewed from afar. The Pierian So- ciety elected ofiicers and planned anuambitious year. Leadership was needed for the class and we elected new ofiicers to meet new responsibilities. Similar elections were held for Honor Society, AFS, Band, Chorus, all with seniors at the helm. Through these elections some of the sudden twists and turns of a journey's course, those twists that can prove fatal, were avoided. The greatest cross-country team in the history ofthe school was present during this ear. Often over- worked and underappreciated, tlie boys delighted and surprised us with their achievements. With December came the cold winds, and, ap- propriately, the chilling College Boards. Early ac- ceptances began to arrive. For some it was a hap- py time, for others a time of insecurity. Our 61 Christmas tree added a bit of warmth to the anti- septic walls, and our chorus filled the halls with joy. Christmas proved a soothing time in the midst of days of disquieting anxiety. At this time we somehow forgot the upheavals of life and felt quieted by the strains of those often heard yet strangely new melodies. Christmas past, it was back to more serious thoughts. We sailed through a bit of rocky weather in the form of mid-year exams, and thereafter re- solved not to work too hard, HSenioritis, you knowf' But for most senioritis proved a feeble way of excusing laziness. The majority continued to work throughout the final six months. We experi- enced a change of our daily routines with the ad- dition ofthe ninth period. Mixed reactions ensued. We journeyed to Wall Street and literally stormed the United Nations. The U.N. visit had doubtful effects on improving international relations. March was a busy month. The final musical pro- duction graced our stage with seniors in key roles. Where's Charley? brought an air of professionalism to our slightly off-Broadway theatre. Later in the month our journey led us to the vitals of our gov- ernment, and with the March on Washington we realized that we were reaching journey's end. We watched our baseball and tennis teams assemble for the final time. We learned of the journeys we would begin after graduation. With June came final exams and the Senior Ball. We took londg last looks at the building we had en- tered each ay for four years. Suddenly we eyed the everyday commonplaces of our vessel with sentiment and affection as we pre ared to depart. Finally, that one last walk througii the long halls, which were so often filled with the smell of s ices and sulphur, and the clicking of typewriter Eeys, evoked a sigh and a tear from some, a breath of relief from others. But no matter what the emotion, we must always remember that it is good to move on. We have completed one part of the larger journey of life. Through stormy days and sunny times we have sailed. Though each of us is an individual, we have been similarly influenced by many experi- ences. Common forces have often worked on us all, and we share the results of these forces. So, we continue on. Most of us are starting different journeys whose courses might never meet again. However, we know that our paths will cross again tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow. But for the present, we have only to follow the poetfs advice: Now, voyager, sail thou forth to seek and find. David Lauer. '67 Z UNDER Underclassmen are strange people. They must learn and gain experience so that they will be able to lead the school when it becomes their responsibility to do so. They are often' underestimated and over- worked by their Senior overseers. And yet they remain faithful to school projects which undeniably need their help and support. ' M i l i Yes, strange people. I I'-4 P'-4 I Organizations are a school's lifeblood. Organizations produce the literature which is representative of the ideas put forth by the students. Students are sup- plied with the opportunity to display their talents by the establishment of cer- tain organizations. it Often the results of an organizationfs work go unpraised,fal- though such results are an integral 'and essential part of a school's life. Finally, some organizations are intended to ,hon4 or those who have shown qualities and have rendered .services which are partic- ularly desirable and admirable. By bringing such people together in one or- ganization, much is often accomplished. First term oflicers B. Hayes. President: J. Mironov. Vice- Presidentl J. Robinson, Secretary: R. Prow. The Albadonie The Editorial Staff and the Business Stalf under the direction ofthe two editors, Barbara Yochum. editorial, and Joan Casserly, business, have worked hard to produce this year's Albadome. The Editorial Staff, working under advisor Mr. R. Kertes, has tried to create a vivid account ofthe 1966-67 high school year. However without the effort of the Business Staff under the guidance of advisor Dr. Evans, the book could not have been printed. Deadline after deadline! HO OR SOCIETY Each year, the faculty elects 596 of the junior class and l0'Zn of the senior class to the National Honor Society on the basis of Five Cardinal Objectives. The student is chosen for his demonstration of character, scholarship, citizenship, leadership, and service. This year the initiation of new members took place in December. The members ofthe Honor Society, under the guidance of Mr. Gromelski, sold Highland Park High School stationery and showed the film Spellbound', to raise money for a scholarship. Also, at the end of each marking period, the Honor Society com- puted homeroom averages and present- ed a plaque to that homeroom with the highest average. During the year Honor Society members offered tutoring to students who required it. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY EM? ees is L5 Isl Row Elected as Juniors: M. Matsumoto, A. Julius, M. Lef- kowits, A. Spectators receive pleasure, eircitement, and satis-f faction from watching and cheering for their team. As for the boys who partici- pate, itis Vdiflicultto express what they achieve. They maintain sound bodies. They' learn the often difficult tasks in-l volving teamwork, cooperation, and ded- ication. In success, they experience satis-2 facarmiand fulfilhnent. In failure, they see .frustrations and disappointment. But moreover, they see that failure is no dis- grace if success is honestly and sincerely sought, for in defeat there is also victory. if eA f TA 625 YA 1, J C , sm ,R ..j'g9 - X H A lg? .tit x -sinh 9 .3 If H tg . ii Neel. Sommers, D. new Gar- den State Con- ference opened with the 1966 fall sports season. The Owls started out on the right wing with a 28-0 win over South Brunswick We have the distinct honor of being the first team to ever win a H- H Debuts game in the New Conference, playing on Friday afternoon, September 23. The next Saturday, amidst mud, and rain, and a sloshy field South River rammed us with a score of 19-0. And, Clifford Scott proved to us the next week that Scotties are stronger when defeat was with us again. The fol- lowing Saturday we scalped the Indians of Parsippany 36-O. But, the ll of Roselle rolled over the unhappy Parkeans 27-7 the next week. Since our fellows didn't want to disappoint their faithful fans, Cartaret was their next victim 9-3 in an exciting iight to the finish. With victory in our hearts, the Owl men had their last win over Roselle Park in early November 24-6. Back at home the next Saturday the Owls had poor luck. We led Fair Haven 3-0 until the 4th period when they scored a touchdown. Numerous penalties caused setbacks which brought us to defeat. 5 ' . P l . era As the final gun went off the H. P. 11 had the ball on Regional's 15 yard line. It was difficult to face defeat because we had outplayed them allowing them 44 yards gain the Gafden State Conference whole game. Finally, for the first time in 9 years the H. P. squad relinquished the Goal Post Trophy to Metuchen High. QBut we'll get it back next yearlj It was a rough flight for the Owls but there were high points such as Se- nior Dave Camporese our 6'2',, 230 lb. tackle being selected for the first team of the Garden State Conference and the Conference outstanding tackle. Senior Bill Rausch, an agile halfback, was also voted onto the Con- ference first team. One outstanding highlight of the season was Junior Doug Milch intercepting a pass from Parsippany and then running 90 yards for the touchdown. Young Fred Boyd, a Sophomore, booted 14 for 14 extra points and 3 Held goals. The Owls had a hard season, but the team survived it well. Prospects for the next year are promising as many boys will return. The younger teams were extremely successful, the reserves with a 6-1 record, and the Freshman 5-0-1. There is little doubt that the Owls will be the top ll in '67. Goldstein, D. Kreyling. B. Rausch. F. Jacobosky 3rd Row-B. Sommers. B. Kiesling, D. Camporese, Brockington. B. Bateman, M. Mausen, A. The group, as most of our teams this year, was composed of underclassmen, who indeed show promise for the future. For example, they did achieve a fourth place in the County Meet, and they did claim second place in the State Relays. Sophomore Bill Criss set a new record in the state for the Group II two mile run. Finally, Mitch Weiderhorn, Pat McGann, Ralph Wycolf and Kevin Ross displayed unusual talent in the half mile run to the two mile run. The team was explosive in distance events. HPHS hopes the Indoor Track team will keep exploding in the future. Bottom Row D. Perlgut, M. Handel, D. Tretsky, P. Plaganis. J. Calisi, B. Criss, J. Hegedus Second Row: Coach John Silogyi. I.
