The Class of '57 would like to ex- press its sincere thanks to Miss Cush- man for her understanding of us und our special problems. We., and many before us, have received from her more than just a classroom educa- tion. It was her constant goal to better us in any way she could. Some of us will go on to college, and others to various jobs, but, through her efforts, we will all be better equipped to recognize our greatest expectations. With deep appreciation, Miss Cushman, we dedicate our yearbook to you. I I N I Acknowledgements We the class of '57 would like to express special acknowledgement to the administration and faculty for helping to make our freshman expectations senior realities. 4 0 X W N Z. l l X MR. MEYER FRISCHLING n President of the Board of Education The Class of 1957 leaves us as its chief legacy its gift of voluntary hard Work to get out the vote on our school referendum. Because of this hard Work, this class graduates already experienced in some of the intricacies of democracy, and experienced, too, in the stimulating pleasure of working for a cause and not for am. g Good luck to you all. I am sure that the Class of 1957 will enjoy good luck and will continue to contribute much to the good luck of others. Meyer F rischling To The Class Of 1957, Graduation is just another step on your ladder of success. To each of you, your parents, your teachers, and the people of Highland Park, congratulations must be extended. Your success in completing four years of high school education has a definite effect on our community. You have raised the level of education in our community another notch. Serving as your superintendent for the past eight years has been a real pleasure. Seeing the bond issue pass has been my greatest desire, it will provide many overdue, needed facilities. May it be completed and made useful to all of the people of Highland Park. Best wishes. E. L. GILLILAND Superintendent of Schools MR. R. RICHARD JOHNSON High School Principal You are my first graduating class, and like the first of anything good and wonderful in life, you are special to me and I have great hopes and expectations for you. As you leave Highland Park High School I would like you to carry this message with you: Whoever you are, be noble, Whatever you do, do well. Whenever you speak, speak kindly, Give joy Wherever you dwell. Good luck and God bless you. R. Richard Johnson Faculty CONDIT R. ATKINSON Instrumental Music IOAN E. Noticed by all as our entry was made, 'Twas apparent to others that we weren't afraid To work and climb to the top was our goal - We were 06. The social season started gay, And the Fall Mixer paved the way For us to meet the other classes - And we did. Football season came to pass, To the games we went en masse. We were proud to cheer our team- So we did. I n studies, too, we spread our fame. Often to us the honor plaque came. But we worked hard to gain our grades - Thus we plugged. Electric squad, drama, chorus, and shop, Cheerleading, newspaper, and Hula Hop, All were enjoyed in our Freshman year - We moved on. In our Sophomore year our football team Bestowed on our school renown and esteem. We won the Central Jersey title - And THE TROPHY. Many new subjects received our attention, A few of these we would like to mention: Geometry, Typing, Shorthand, and Bio. - We were busy. Our Junior year, a busy one, was coming to a finish. Summer was upon us and our joys did not diminish. We said good-byei' to all our friends and said we'd see them soon - We moved on. When our Senior year had started, Mr. Lance had from us parted. Mr. johnson took his place - Best of luck. The Buddy System was something new, That our class succeeded in putting through To make the Freshmen feel at home - It proved helpful. Our Senior Production, based on a trial, The captive audience did beguile. We showed much talent unforseen - All were pleased. To the U. N. we went in November And enjoyed a trip we'll always remember. A class trip to Washington was also in store -- We traveled much. We had committees large and small Planning for gift, fun nite, and ball. They worked hard and did their job - Thanks to each. At last the time has come to part, But we will leave with heavy heart The school and friends we hold so dear - Bless you all. The most Unvenerable Bedes BOB WALTER and JOHN DEINER SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS In ClUbS and Other doings we took 0 large' pmt- President, john Deinerg Vice President, Nancy Van Heuvf-lg Our achievements for the school were of to a good start. Secretary, Emily Simoncellig Treasurer, Paul F essock. Many organizations profited from our skill - we pitched in. Our second year ended with a fine Well Done, For the track team once again had won. The Central jersey Crown was ours - We moved on. Upperclassmen now at last, Two years at H. P. had slid past. But the two best still lay ahead - How tempus fugit. The crowded condition of our hallowed halls Necessitated having two lunch calls. At noon our class was split in half - But we ate. After the rally for the big game, Our fun nite was held and everyone came. It was a success as you all know - We made money. Our girls helped make Sports Night a success With Women of Tomorrow in unusual dress. Robin Hood and Teddy Bears were seen there too Dig those females. Our gym became a festive place. With decorations we changed its face For our Junior Prom, the Mardi Gras - All were happy. 44 .ssfiss s if UNDERCLASSMEN We the Seniors see in the fufure fhe greafesf pecf f' I ll of the Underclassmen fu fi ecl. 7 f JUNIORS . 11-1 Left to right, Front row: L. The 1956 Highland Park football team, showing a strong, fighting spirit compiled a fine 6-3 record. The season opened with the team facing South Plainfield, which was playing its first interscholastic football game. The Owls spoiled their debut with a 36-6 trouncing. The next two weeks saw the Parkites staying undefeated with impressive wins over Clark Township, 13-7, and North Hunterdon Regional, 20-6. The following week Scotch Plains cut Highland Parkis undefeated string at three with a 33-7 victory. However, the Owls came back with successive triumphs over Livingston, 7-0, and Sayreville, 6-0, to give them a 5-1 record after six games. Going into the final third of the season, the Parkites faced a rugged Ewing Township team and lost for the Thanksgiving Day game with Metuchen. The Owls were stopped by the spirited Bulldogs, who won a :20-0 decision. Thus a highly successful season ended on a dismal note with the loss of the Goal Post Trophy. Nevertheless, Congratulations to all who helped bring Highland Park another Winning season. sp.: O ' W ,. r I ' ,S , 1 A I . I . Mr. Lepine faced the 1956-1957 basketball season with only three seniors and one letter- man on the team. However, after a slow start which had many fans expecting the worst, the Owls came back and compiled 'a winning 12-9 record. The first three games of the season ended in losses for the Parkites at the hands of strong Carteret Q51-54Q, Weehawken Q49-66D and St. Peters Q41-541 teams. After this the Owls picked up victories over the Alumni Q69-55l, and Scotch Plains Q73-711 before losing to a weak Clark Township team 144-49J. A victory over South Plainfield Q60-351 and a loss to Dunellen C54-581 followed. At this point Highland Park had the best part of its season. The team started by beating St. Peters Q48-465 for the first time in four years and then trouncing Thomas Edison Q87-521. A defeat at Rahway Q53-62D was followed by a victory over Clark Township C69-505. Then came one of the high spots of the season, a 55-40 walloping of New Brunswick in the first basketball game ever played between the two schools. A victory over Metuchen Q69-591 and a defeat by Carteret Q43-501 preceeded consecu- tive victories over Bound Brook Q77-562, Long Branch Q79-552 and Metuchen Q59-55l. A loss to Dunellen C50-615 in the final game of the season left only the State Toumament. In the first round Highland Park, by a score of 52-43, upset a highly favored Red Bank team which had lost only two games all year. How- ever, in the second round the Owls were defeated by Carteret by a score of 43-47. The team is to be congratulated on their fine spirit and occasional brilliance which provided for many thrilling moments throughout the season. D. SAPIRO .,.g:. .3'f R. HABERKERN A. Many of thv players were inexperienced but nevertheless came on to win the last two matches of the season. The Owls will feel heavily the loss of Paul Feller, who was a truly outstanding tennis player. However, three re- turning lettermen make the outlook for 1957 fairly hright. The entire 1956 team should be congratulated for the progress it made over the course of the season. BASEBALL The Highland Park 1956 baseball team compiled a very fine 13-5 record during the course of the season. Sparked by several seniors, the Owls opened with victories over Iames- burg and Bound Brook. Then, after sandwiching a shut out victory over Scotch Plains between defeats to Carteret and Rahway, they romped over Rutgers Prep 19-6. This was fol- lowed by a victory over Sayreville, a loss to Ewing and a win over Dunellen. The second half of the season began with Highland Park losing to Bound Brook and winning over Metuchen, After losing to Edison in the next game, the Owls really caught fire. Beginning with an 11-0 rout of Rutgers Prep, the Parkites won every game, taking the measure of Dunellen, Metuchen, St. Peters, Scotch Plains and Iamesburg. The Owls were victorious over Bernardsville Q70-475, Mctuchen Q86-312 and Perth Amboy C57-50j. Losses were at the hands of Somerville 45773-59V:iJ, Bound Brook Q54-631, and Scotch Plains f-19 2X5-66 3!5j. As usual our cindermen participated in many other meets other than the duals. At XVest Point in the traditional meet between the West Point Plebes and a combined team from Highland Park, New Brunswick, and Princeton High Schools, the Plebes were victorious 2X5-73 3f5j. At the Bridgeton Relays Highland Park placed second in the two mile relay and later at the Penn Relays placed third in the mile. In addition the Owls were fourth among the small schools in the County Meet, fifth in the New Brunswick Invitation Meet and third in the Central jersey Meet. Unfortunately, no honors came to Highland Park in the Long Branch Relays or in the State Meet. XVhereas the team did not compile an outstanding record, all signs indicate an improvement in the future as a result of many promising underclassmen. Time and time again their pleas were turned down with the statement that a new school or an addition to our old one was being planned. By the middle of our junior year we were beginning to wonder if these plans would ever be put on paper. This year written plans were finally brought before the public. Eagerly we worked, deliver- ing brochures morning, noon, and night before the election. Our concern, along with that of many parents and teachers, was not in vain, however. On January 22, 1957, the bond issue was voted on and passed. We would like to thank you, the voters of Highland Park, for helping our greatest expec- tation to become a reality.
