The freshmen raised S97 fror the Polio Drive in honor of a classmate lean Taylor who was stricken with the dread disease A successful fun nite was given to the delight of the rest of the school while the members of the class have distinguished themselves in other fields as well. With the beginning of the football season, the frosh went all out in support of our teams with a spirit that has lasted through basket- ball, tennis, track, and baseball. Their school spirit, however, has not been con- fined to sports alone. They have shown their ability in the band, the Special Singing Groups, and in dramatic presentations. ln the Student Council and the Column Club the representatives of the freshman class have shown themselves to be worthy of recognition. There is no doubt that this class will enjoy a very successful high school career. hmen! , b Pres Freshmen will e sr A 4? l xt,- FRESHMAN HOMEROOM 9-2 First row, left to right: Natalie Davis, Nancy Al- strup, Betty Anizell, Roberta Bruck, Phyllis Kehoe, Carol Tarkoe. For a while the team showed its inexperience and conquently lost 12 of its first 14 games. Then continual play, and bull-dog spirit brought about a marked change. The lay-Vees defeated Dunellen in overtime-a team that had walloped them a few weeks bfore-and finished strong by tak- ing 7 out of the last 10 contests. The boys ex- pected to battle most strongly for varsity berths next year are lohnny O'Shea, Bob Ellis, Char- ley Wilson, Fred Sbrilli, Dick Clickner and Charley Reed. FRESMAN BASKETBALL Coach Fred Wiebolt's freshman'endured a rather poor season this year, finishing with a 3 and 12 record. As usual, lack of facilities, greatly hampered the frosh. Contenders for next year's lay-Vees will include Roy Blickle, lim Gilson, Pete Dolliver, Robert White, George Bronson, Bob Goldstein, and Iohn Szabo. la 7eam '7eam ,X X I IX rs YS Mo., .Exon 'wr ,Ar N Lsf' T337 f-1 H F HQP 6 Fxrst row left to nght Allen Zack George Tnblehorn Brlly Van Derveer Ilm Whrte George Brunso Rosarro Scarcella Herbre Leonard Ethan Ellrs Bob Nxecke Second row Rrchard Schwartzbard Walter Gandek Irm Grb son Irwm Edelstem M1 Frsher Rrchard Addy Ioachrm Sulirran Bob Per dulc Irmm Pe rtone T rd row lack Hanoka Doug Iames Bob Wmslow Y P Larry Leonard Dlck Co Fourth row Drck Mor ton latte Bob Iohnson 'Edgar Ned Mehrh f Dawson Ernre H llllull K X44 0 g f 1 1 ' ' llo Drck Roeser Archxe Bork Ken Stout Ed Deuchar Bob Zoller Iohn Bxllhelmer Melvm Frredberg Bur ve Lorrk Bob OGrady Frith row Patsy Iofireda Ioe 16 Van Derveer Iames Edgar Pete Dolhver Iohn TRACK The 49 track team got off to a good start by soundly trouncmg Somervrlle for the hrst trme 1n our hlstory and contmued 1n the same manner by dumpmg all hve of rts regular op ponents In add1t1on after placmg m the New ark Board of Educatlon Meet and the Long Branch Relays we were declared Small School Champxons at the County Meet A week later we won the Central Iersey Groups I and II Champlonshxps Fmally at the State Meet we placed hfth largely through the efforts of Dxck Morse and Erme Van Derveer Larry Leonard was manager of the team and Iay Dakelman head coach The memory of our assxstant coach who passed away last year rs honored by the Harry Wmckler Memor1a1 Trophy r 9 , '11, tug '-Y! This number, along with over eighty Senior AC. members, formed the largest club since its formation. Both the senior and junior groups chose speedball as their main sport for the fall season. Basketball was played during the winter months, with a round robin tournament at the end of the season to determine the top team in the club. With the coming of warmer weather the girls took on softball. Late in the season the group held its annual picnic to close out a successful year. 4.755 ft , Y' 'xt v IUNIOR A.
