Therefore, to the sponsors of the Albadome, Alfred Buschhorn, Gilberta Wallace and Prince Chenaulc, the Class of 1943 dedicates this book. They represent to us the strength of the American home front and the inspiration of American education not only in making present successes possible but in shaping the ideals and destinies of Amer- ica's future Fighters for Freedom. Not to be forgotten is the part played by the Juniors, who showed a spirit befitting their position as upper classmen. Their attempts to lead in the sale of war stamps added much to the competitive spirit of that project, and they often came out at the top of the list. Many juniors are in the general membership of the Victory Corps, and several are in special divisions of this new organization. Although all special trips were canceled for the duration, Juniors found plenty of things to do around homeg one of these was the presentation of a portion of Mac- beth at an assembly program by one of the English classes. Since social functions had to take a back seat, it was decided to combine the junior Prom and the Senior Ball into one large event. Students wrote the final script and took parts in the production. This unit gave them experience in directing and filming a picture as well as acquainting them with the use of theatrical make-up. In the fall of the year a drive to collect old or unused keys was conducted. Almost 5,000 keys were brought in and turned over to the authorities for conversion to war material. When the results were tabulated, the Sophomore class was found to rank far above all others. They also entered whole-heartedly into the grade contest for the top place in war stamp sales, and were successful in reaching the goal many times. With their extra pennies the Sophomorcs continued their senior fund, started at the beginning of their high school career. The class of '45 can look back on this year of work with pride. if- ' . bww, .noun in Page 37 Although the Freshmen were new in H. P. H. S., they quickly became acquainted and during the course of the year took part enthusiastically in all the different drives for the advancement of the war effort. They collected fountain pens for Mr. Ehrenfeld, a former teacher, who had them distributed among his fellow soldiers. During the Victory Book campaign the Freshman class proved its leadership ability by contributing more books than any other class in the school. This work formed part of a nation wide drive which provided reading material for service men all over the country. Almost fifty per cent of the ninth grade has successfully met the requirements of the Victory Corps and is actively participating in its endeavor to back up our fighting forces. Because of its high scholastic rating one of the home rooms succeeded in gaining possession of the Honor Society plaque for two successive marking periods. The year's record for the ninth grade shows great promise for the future. S: ..M...-4...-.-- THE FRESHMA nn-1--.-.......-..,. Standing flefr to righrj: F ECM, AHIIIOII ' .dward B y Ksgdis. In the season's inaugural, the Owls tripped Dun- ellen, 12 to 0, for their first conference victory and went on to beat Matawan, 6 to 0, and Freehold, 6 to 0, before losing their only game to North Arling- ton by a 13 to 0 score. Rutgers Prep was the next victim of Coach Paul I-Iancock's charges who ran up 26 points to the opponents' 2. The Parkites then defeated Sayreville, 14-0 and finished up the season with a 12 to 0 victory over Scotch Plains. Tony Raspa, regular guard for three years, and Wilbur Perry, hard-hitting back, were honored with positions on the first team of All-County selections. jim Lackey, Willie Milazzo, Stan Dietel and Fred DeBlon were other seniors who saw service in the backfield. In the line, Forrest Button and Carl Cem- inaro took care of the end positions, while John Pea- body, and John Delesandro were tackles. Raspa was the guard who was a senior, and jim Taigia was at center. Page 56 ll t Hi hland Park team, composed almost A ga an g entirely of seniors, fought its way into territory ' O l uintets this season untouched by previous w q when it made its way to the Group 2 State Finals only to lose to an outstanding Weehawken com- bine. Coach Bus Lepine's charges, whose final record was 18 wins in 21 starts, garnered the Central jersey Championship for the second time in the schoolls history. The 1940 team was the only other Highland Park quintet to win that crown. The tournament proved to be the outstanding feature of the season. The Owls started off their tournament competition in the underdog role against a highly rated Neptune team that was d l u set by the Parkites, 31 to 29. Lakewood k- ru e y p fell the next victim to Highland Park's fast brea ing offense, 27 to 23, and with this victory went the Group 2 Central jersey Championship. ln the semi-finals where the 1940 team was eliminated, Burlington, rated as the favorite, was ' one of the knocked off by a 42 to 39 score in Lest exhibitions of basketball Highland Park Af:-up ' ln the regular season Highland Park started off with a one point margin of victory over a strong Alumni squad. Carteret then administered one of the two defeats that it scored over the Owls during the season. Victories came plentiful then until the second meeting with Carteret after which a twelve game winning streak was extended until the flnal game. Double victories were registered over Dunelleng Group 1 State Champions, Sayrevilleg Rutgers Prep, Hightstowng Scotch Plains and Metuchen. The Owls also triumphed over Jamesburg and Bound Brook. ' f the ear was forward Stan High scorer or y Dietel who with five others, comprised the seniors on the first team. Fred Scheidig, sophomore, took care of the center position. ln the back court at the guard positions were jim Taigia and Sol Gold- stein while Ed Horn, Wilbur Perry and Forrest Button were the other forwards who alternated on the first team. Seniors on the second team were Frank Norris Page 57 this came the trip to - f .1.,. and Frank Cerminaro. Bob Ballou was senior BASKETB LL TENNIS Highland Park's tennis team had its most suc- cessful season in the school's history last year when the undefeated netmen annexed the Group 2 State Championship and the Little Four Conference title. Coach Al Buschhorn's charges Won eight matches when they scored double victories over Roselle Park, Jamesburg, Metuchen and Dunellen. Outstanding seniors were Herman Breitkopf, Wally Steinberg, while Bob Jordan, now a junior, was the leading underclassman, who was unde- feated in singles matches and also had a fine record in doubles. Page 58 TRACK Highland Park's track team lost a dual meet for the first time last year when Carteret defeated them, but the Owls still registered a record of four victories and one loss. Jamesburg State Home was toppled in the in- augural meet, and then Highland Park beat James- burg High School. Other wins were scored over Scotch Plains and Rahway. In the Little Four Conference meet, the Parkites came in second as Metuchen placed first and Scotch Plains third. George Jones and Art Peabody, seniors, led the milers and Jim Lackey stood out both in jumping and running. In the field events, Ed Meagher and Tony Raspa received letters, while Fred DeBlon and John Delesandro were other seniors who were on this section of the squad. For the first time in the school's track history, the Middlesex County Track Meet was not en- tered by Highland Park. Frequent intramural games between teams from the differ- ent classes are arranged by managers from the Athletic Association and Miss Harvey. Every girl in the school is part of the Athletic Association. Managers and assistant managers are selected to manage tournaments and the business of the association. The nomination and election of the association's officers is conducted in the gym classes and each girl is entitled to a vote. Throughout the year the Athletic Association sponsors dances to raise funds for awards which are given to girls outstanding in sportsmanship, cooperation, and ability. Prizes are given at a special assembly. Every officer of the organization receives her letter. Special awards consist of brace- lets and medals. i This year the school purchased field hockey equipment, and for the first time the game was played at school. Competitive games were held between the classes. Field hockey replaced soccer which was played in the fall in past years. In the gym classes the girls keep up with che current sporting events, and frequent trips under the leadership of Miss Harvey are made to various games and exhibits during the year. Several times during the year games with teams from nearby schools have been played. The sport that is most popular is basketball.
