Under the guid- ance of Miss Ellen Harvey, the General Coun- cil, student government body, has been very active. A new constitution was written, as the old one, which was made for a junior high school, was no longer satisfactory. Narious other changes were naadt and many problems solved, such as the arranging of a uniform seat- ing plan for study hall and the granting of locker privileges. Contestmts un.. Mm., o 'wr 9 as W IF BASEBALL Lanky john Fox, Highland Park High's ace right-hander, came through with a fine exhi- bition of relief twirling in the Owl nine's 1940 debut as the Maroon and Gray tossers toppled South Amboyls Hoffman High 8-6. Fox re- lieved Lefty W'einzicher in the fourth inning and allowed only one hit for the rest of the contest. The game, which was scheduled for seven innings, was won by jules lJragos's triple with one on in the top of the ninth, the blow coming with the score deadlocked at 6-6. ln their next encounter, despite Mike l'arlo's SPRI SPCR Pau llfly-fu 11 three ringing doubles, the Parkites suffered their first defeat of the young season at the hands of Matawan 6-5. Relief pitcher Fox walked in the winning tally in the sixth, the only counter he allowed after replacing starter Bill Quinn, who had allowed five runs in four innings. An erratic first inning lost the next game for the Owls as the Princeton batsmen went on a rampage and scored seven runs on four hitsg this splurge was greatly aided by four Highland Park miscues afield and three walks issued by Lefty Weinzicher. The Blue and W'hite finally won out 8-4. In the last game prior to our going to press the Maroon and Gray got back into the win column by ekeing out a 4-3 decision over Rah- way. Lefty Weinzicher went the full distance to receive credit for his victory of the year, despite a bit of wildness. TENNIS This year's tennis team's outlook seems bet- ter than ever before. They started the season off with quick victories over South River and Jamesburg. At the number one singles spot is Harold Heine, veteran of two seasons, followed by Stuart Lefkowits and Herman Breitkopf at the numbers two and three spots respectively. Num- ber one doubles team is the combination of Breitkopf and Lefkowits, followed by Heine -ind XWard Goetz. TRACK, 1940 Coach Paul Hancock's charges beat james- burg Home and Scotch Plains and Jamesburg, to go on undefeated on the cinders. Lissy Evans, Stan Seiden and Bob Nissley, sprint men, and Russ Smalley, pole-vaulter, make up the relay. Bob Butler, leading broad-jumper, and Ed VanNuis run the 440, while Taffy Sceva is the leading hurdler. Nick Bachman runs the half and Tom Burke and Boiglar,' Murphy the mile. .lim liurth, Juny Enright and Bill Meis- chied high-jump, the latter being the leading pole-vaulter. Nloof Boice, county discus cham- pion, and Bill Campbell are in three weight events. Alan Vorhees and Bob Ochs throw the shot and discus with joe Murphy and Yokel Clelland on the jayelin. T S Ti-it caowu cheered, the band blared forth the school song, and the cheerleaders marched down the aisles of the Park Theater on March 4th, with the drum majorettes leading for th: second Highland Park Night in the history of Highland Park High School. Big signs glared forth with big letters Beat Atlantic High- lands and W'ill we be State Champs? for the benefit of the basketball team of Highland Park High School, who were in the State Tour- nament finals. After skits on what goes on in the halls of H.P.H.S., there were cheers by five of the Highland Park cheerleaders, and the band played, while the snappy drum majorettes swung their batons in rhythm to the music. Then there came the biggest event of the eve- ning when a poem written about the basket- ball team by Manager William Beans Camp- bell was read. Many laughs were heard as it was being read by the cheerleaders Bish, Greeny, Nina Mae, Elaine, and Lupt.,' A cake was then presented to Tippy Engelhardt with Beat Atlantic Highlands printed on the icing. This ended the big celebration of High- land Park Night. The money the Girls' Athletic Club made on Highland Park Night was used to buy awards for the most outstanding girl athletes for the year of 1940. CHEERLEADERS The cry goes up, where are the pretty cheerleaders from Highland Park High? Out runs the Captain, Marge Stefan, with the nine beauties trailing. Let's give a new cheer. The TEAM cheer. Despite many difficulties the girls worked hard under the supervision of Miss Le Hoagland. Graduating from the squad are three seniors who have served two years: june J. Werner, Ruth G. jaqui, and Margaret C. Bishop. GIRLS' ATHLETIC CLUB The Girls' Athletic Club is one of the best organizations in the school for girls who want to have a good time and keep in shape. It is run entirely by the girls. Among the popular sports are baseball, basketball, football, track. soccer, and volleyball. The club meets on GIRLS, XVcdnesday for freshmen and sophomores, and on Fridays for juniors and seniors. During this year the position of president was held by Maggie Bishopq Greeny Werner filfed the vice-president position. Of course a club needs a secretaryq therefore we elected Clare De Blon. W'e must not forget the most important oflicer, one who handles the cash, and who should appear but W'illie Hofland to take over the position. There are many other girls who also participate in helping to m ke this club popular and successful. All those who enter Highland Park High School will have one grand time in it if they decide to join. PORTS SWWW gf quam by WM S+-'fa Nik A 134ff jfuua.
