They Cozmsellecl Us P1'i1zeipal's M esse ge ONWARD - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow must have had high school students in mind when he wrote the poem, Excelsior, The central character of the poem is a young man with a goal, a goal which he tries to reach giving the supreme effort-his life. All stu- dents should have in mind the goals they hope to achieve via their edu- cation and should pursue them dil- igently, as their achievement will be in direct proportion to their ef- fort. To those of you who have com- pleted your time at Highland, I hope that the work that you have completed will permit you to achieve the goals that you have set for your future schooling or work. To those of you who will return for further schooling, I hope that you will set your goals high and work hard to achieve them.-ONWARD! fxs Miss Pat Collins, Secretary to Mr. Zimmerman. As we the class of 56 go forward into the world, our memorable days at Highland will never be for- gotten. From the time we entered as grass-green Freshmen until we were mellow Seniors and received our diplomas, we have enjoyed our days at H.H.S. We will not forget our Freshman initiation or the good fight we put up in the Mr. and Miss Tycoma contest for our candidates, Hilda Curtis and jim Cline. Christmas in the Forest, our first formal, was a big thrill for all as was the spring formal, Singing in the Rain. Then as Sophomores we got our revenge in the initiation. After a day of being Almighty Sopho- mores, we treated the Freshmen to a party and dance. Betty Griffith, our Miss Tycoma candidate, came in second this year. juniors! We felt more worthwhile because we were upper classmen now. Donna Melton represented a hard-working and proud class when she won the Miss Tycoma contest. Under the Sea was the theme for the junior-Senior Banquet and Prom which was a real success. Custer's Last Stand, the junior Class Play helped finance the Prom and Banquet. In our fourth year, the climax of high school, we were all looking forward to graduation and planning what we were going to do afterward. The Senior Class Play, Time Out for Ginger, the proceeds of which went to buy a gift for the school, was a great success. After a triumphant football season, Pamela Nelson and Sylvia Benner represented the Senior Class as Homecoming candidates. We all shared the honor when Pamela was crowned Princess. Pamela Nelson also represented us as our Miss Tycoma candidate, to bring home the honor for a second time for our class as Miss Tycoma. KEITH ALLAN Yep, I'r11 ll Senior lbir year. This is a goal that we have sought after since we entered as frightened little Freshmen. Our first order of business this year was to order our class rings which would prove to all that we were Juniors. Next on our list of business, was selecting our can- didates for Homecoming Queen and Tycoma con- test. We selected jackie Smith and JoAnn Ray to represent us at Homecoming. We were all very proud when Jackie was crowned the Queen and JoAnn one of her princesses. Brenda Berndt was our select candidate for Miss Tycoma. We spent nights cover- Yozmg Adults From Polished ing the country side selling tickets to raise money for Brenda, only to be defeated by our Senior competitors. We had the big problem of raising money this year so that we might give the Seniors the annual junior-Senior Banquet. To raise money we held .a dance, roller skating party, cake sales, and sold at games. Our last duty of our all important Junior year was to usher the Seniors down the aisle on graduation night. Now we are looking forward to filling the envied Senior spot and assuming the varied duties that it brings. 5 Standing, left to right: Mr. Driver, Advisorg Bob Lemcke, Secretaryg' Ben Colwell, Social Chairmang Jerry Detloff, Vice Presidentg Bill Perdue, President. Cocky, Eager . . . Our Sophomore year started out in a big way as our first thoughts were those of the coming Freshman initiation. We decided to be original this year by putting all the Freshman names in a box and having each Sophomore draw one name. We then told the Freshman whose name we drew what he had to wear. This way we had a great variety of funny-looking Freshmen. We selected Carolyn Forney and Barbara Krieger as our'Homecoming Candidates. Lynne Watkins was our choice for Miss Tycoma of 1956. We worked very hard for her. Through deep snow and other un- pleasant weather conditions, we went on many ticket but Confident drives. To raise money for our class we held dances, roller skating parties, cake sales, and candy sales. In the spring we served at the annual junior-Senior Banquet. This was a real experience for us as we learned what was expected of us next year. The last duty of our Sophomore year was to deco- rate for the Senior Baccalaureate. With the experience .of our Sophomore year behind us, we are now looking forward with eagerness to being juniors. Back row, left to right: Stanley Strausz, Presidentg Tony Pottratz. Wide-Eyed, Curious cmd Bewilciered As we stepped across the threshold as green- frightened Freshmen, we entered upon a new and eventful life at Highland. Our first adventure was the Freshman initiation. Rosemary Hammermeister and Terry Glasscock won prizes for being the best dressed. After a day of bowing and fulfilling the Sophomores' wishes, they treated us to an evening wiener roast party. Our first duty as a class was to nominate candi- dates for homecoming queen. We selected Wanda Buchanan and Karen Raymond. For the annual Miss Tycoma contest we chose Anna Adams. We weren't so successful in raising money for her, but with the added experience of another year, we hope to do better. Our class officers were selected with care so that we might have an active class. One of our projects to raise money for this year was selling at the foot- ball and baketball gamesg we also held cake and candy sales. To decorate for the Senior Graduation was our last requirement as Freshmen, In V ' Standing, left to right: Charles Lee, Social Chairmang Mr. Leader, Advisorg Gary Anderson, Presidentg Mr. Newbill, Advisorg Rosemary Hammermeister, Vice Presidentg Loyce johnson, Social Chairmang Lee VC' atkins. Some of the duties include reading the shelves, collect- ing books, returning them to the shelves, checking books out, arranging bulletin boards and general housekeeping. The Library Club holds class every Tuesday. Two girls serve as hostesses each month at a Library Club party. At Christmas time the annual Christmas party and gift exchange is held. ' In addition to the regular librarians are Barbara Barrett, in charge of typing, and Darlene Weaver in charge of overdues. During the year the Library Club earned money for a gift for the library by selling at Football and Basketball games and by holding sales. During football and basketball seasons the band was always present and entertained at half time with marching and different field forma- tions. They also played at pep assemblies and other special occasions. The two highlights of the year were giving the Christmas and Spring Concerts with the Glee Club. Majorettes were Donna Pursley and Nancy Lydin. Scottie hopefuls have absorbed. The season, unsuccessful, in terms of games won, ended with a 25 to 6 win over Moxie, and if we can continue next season where we have left off this year, we may anticipate a more successful season. We further realize that we are a smaller school now, so Freshmen of next year will be counted on to help us to a better season. The nucleus of the Scotties basketball squad this year consisted of four returning senior let- termen: Ken Rochel, Arnold Pleasant, jim Cline, and Dick Conrad. This senior group was bolstered by fellow classmates, Charles Pogue, Carl Smith, jerry Groenig and Vernon Ford. Underclassmen rounding out this squad roster were junior Gary Williaiiis and sophomores, Dick Mortimer, Larry Knutson and Bob Ward. Graduation this spring will leave our next years roster with a small number of returning lettermen. The Highland B squad has shown promise and, through continued progress, might make the future AH squad basketball fortunes at Highland as successful as this yearls B squad season was. The team had a very successful pre-League season, winning all four games. By losing only four out of sixteen League games, the team ended up in third place giving them a berth in the district tournament in Sunnyside. The B squad completed one of its most success- ful seasons with a record of 15 wins against only four losses. Three of the four losses were lost by margins of 1, 2, and 3 points. The only decisive defeat was by Sunnyside by a 45-32 score. The young players, predominately sophomores, developed very well so that in the second half of the season only one game was dropped in the last ten. The leading scorer for the team was 6, 3 center, Bob Ward, with 155 points. Close behind was Dick Mortimer with 143, Topper Stertis with 131, jim Caton with 130, Larry Knutson with 92 and Hugh Townsend with 71. The equal distribution in the scoring showed evidence of fine team play with a game scoring offense average of 44 points. Probably the most important factor was the fine defensive effort in holding their opposition to 39 points a game in a total of 19 games. Highland basketball followers may have good reason for wishing for continued exciting and winning seasons from thepromising group of present sopho- mores. However, only with continued improvement from year to year as this group has shown since its freshman year, will this possibility become a reality. r 1 . 1- B Squad Schedule Highland Highland Highland Highland Highland Highland Highland Highland Highland Highland Highland Highland Highland Highland Highland Highland Highland Highland Highland Zillah Sunnyside Moses Lake West Valley Grandview Selah West Valley Naches Cle Elum ..
