We get back our rnete as we measure, We cannot do wrong and feel rightg Nor can we give pain and give pleasure For justice avenges each slight. The air for the wing of the sparrow, The bush for the robin and Wren, But always the path that is narrow And straight for the children of men. - ALICE CAREY MRS. CAREY Mrs. Mayme Carey, Librarian, English and For- eign Language teacher has been chosen by the Annual Staff of 1954 as the person to whom their publication, the Tycoma, is dedicated. Mrs. Carey has been a loyal, friendly, and de- pendable faculty member of Highland High School since its formation in 1944 and before that for many years a beloved teacher at Co- wiche High School. We are proud to recognize the 30 years of fine service that Mrs. Carey has given to the students of this and yester- years. We sincerely hope that her future shall shine as brightly as her past and that many more Highland classes will benefit by her in- struction, guidance, and friendship. Our memorable days at Highland will never be forgotten as we look at our achievement of the past four years. Raising funds for our Senior trip and Senior gift occupied much of our time, but we were successful. A first ticket rally for the Senior play boosted our funds considerably besides affording ev- ery one a good time. As Seniors we can say we have gained much from our high school years at Highland. Teamwork was stressed by the Seniors in editing the Highland Hi-Lites. A larger than average journalism class was divided in half, making two separate paper staffs, each staff publishing an issue bi-monthly. A familiar sight on Friday afternoons was tht of some staff member rushing to meet a deadline, cutting headlines, doing art work, or running the mimeograph. These are just a few examples of what makes working on the Hi-Lites an interesting job. En: This year the junior journalism class, under the supervision of Mr. Ralph Thomas, succeeded in putting out nine issues of Highland Hi-Lites. Demonstrations were given and many varieties of color were used in both paper and ink. The class, con- sisting of 24 students, found that putting out a paper is as enjoyable as it is educa- tional. The staff was divided up into co-editors of each separate page, each choosing his own page. Shirley Connelly acted as editor and Marlene Bline as Assistant Editor. Along with the regular duties of the class, there were several occasions when special one page issues and programs for games were turned out. This year there was an advertising page added to the paper. With the funds procured from this, many new pieces of equipment were bought which enabled the class to do a bigger and better job. Activities including returning books to shelves, col- lecting overdue books, reading shelves, caring for magazines, arranging bulletin boards, and general housekeeping, highlights a librarian's busy day but the library club was not all work and no play for these girls. Two girls join as hostesses for a party each month, the girls gathered in the home of Mrs. Carey for a December Christmas party-potluck and the month of May was spotlighted by a dinner- theater party. During the year's course the group earned money through various means joining the football fund by contributing to it. FOOTBALL B TEAM Get that ball, Cline! Highland offensive ready to go The Highland 1953 football team started out the season with 68 candidates for the various positions. There were quite a few lettermen back, and the rest were boys with a lot of desire and willingness to play football. The Scotties opened up against a strong Prosser ball club which over-powered the Scotts 28-13 for the win. In the second game the Scotties took their re- venge by traveling to Sumner, beating Sumner 27-0 in a lop-sided tilt. In the first leagpe game against Marquette, Highland proved that they were not easily overcome when they lost by only one touchdown 27-20 against the league winning Mar.quette Squires. In league play, Highland continued their winning ways and finished second to the Cle Elum Warriors in a hotly contested race. This year's team was a well balanced squad in which all of the squad members contributed to the success of the team. Lee Brauer, Ron Rochel and Clint Galloway will be lost by graduation and will be greatly missed, but the remainder of the squad will return for next year's season. The B squad which won 17 and lost 3, will also contribute to next year's team. Lee Brauer was elected by his teammates as the honorary captain for the year. Clint Galloway and Larry Mortimer were chosen as the co-inspirational award winners. Highland .................... 3 1 Highland ....... Highland ....... Highland ....... Highland ....... Although the 1954 tennis team did not win very many of its matches, it is hoped it gained some invaluable experience. In spite of some very strong valley competition this year, the team at all times exhibited good sportsmanship and a fine competitive spirit. Bob Hintze and Barbara Beffa were elected honorary captains. With Ken Dueker, jean Snipes, Bob and Barbara re- turning, the team should give a good account of itself next year. 7 Ken Dueker, David Howerton, The 1954 track season started on the ninth of March with 65 candidates ready to go for the first turnout. Of these men approximately 50 made up the varsity squad with the remainder taking on B squad duties. A fine team spirit was shown throughout the season. Highland opened up with a dual meet with Sunny- side on the second of April, beating the Grizzlies 71 to 44. Two weeks later the Scotties were edged out of a triangular meet with Cle Elum and Naches: Cle Elum On May 16 the, Scotties fell to the strong Ellens- burg team 74-48 in a dual meet. At Wapato the fol- lowing week, Highland lost 51-50 in a meet in which the pole vault event was left out, therefore keeping the Scotties from gaining any more points. In the final meet Highland downed three of the valley schools to win a four way meet at Selah ac- cumulating 61 points. The other three teams were Naches, Toppenish and Selah. In the Sub-district meet held in Yakima the Scot- ties took fourth and placed Dale Leach and Delane Smith in the District Meet on the following week. Dale Leach won the District High Hurdles event and went on to the State meet in Pullman, in which he placed fifth for State Honors.
