Angel Jan Qllzusa 4 istnrg When the Class of 1968 entered Highland High School it was composed of forty-eight mem- bers. The year started with the election of the following officers: Jackie Herring, President 3 Paul Batchelder, Vice-President, Carol Smith, Secretary, Rick Sabbert, Treasurer g and Frank Cluck, Sgt. at Arms. The sponsors were Mrs. Wolfley and the late Mrs. Wheatly. The Seniors initiated us into HHS by painting our faces with magic markers and making us do numerous chores such as yelling, carrying their books, and anything else they could think of. That evening we were honored with a dance sponsored by the seniors. In the spring we had a hayrack ride as our first class party. As money-making projects, we had a food sale and a car wash. During our freshman year Sharon Baxter got married, and J ere Tracy quit school. Linda Dil- lion transferred to Hiawatha High School at the end of the year. As Sophomores we started the year with the following officers: James Farmer, President, Paul Batchelder, Vice-President, Carol Smith, Secretary, Linda Murphy, Treasurer, and Frank Cluck, Sgt. at Arms. The sponsors were Mr. Nigus and Mr. Diffley. ,J Money-making projects for the year were a car wash and sellingjapples at ball games. For our class parties, we went to. James Farmer transferred to Lafayette, Indiana and Greg Wakefield trans- ferred to Elkworth, Minnesota. Kenneth Ivey, John Frayer, and Richard Frayer also left us at the close of the year. We gained three new students that year. Elizabeth Hedrick transferred from Costa Mesa, California, and Wayne Gaul and Ken Herring from Troy, Kansas. The Junior year was one of the busiest for the Class of '68. It began with the selection of the following officers: Paul Batchelder, President, Frank Cluck, Vice-President, Carol Smith, Secre- tary, Linda Murphy, Treasurer, Wayne Gaul and Greg Miller, Sgts. at Arms. Mrs. Volker and Mr. Zahner were our sponsors. At the beginning of the year Ronnie Rhodd transferred from Reserve, Kansas to HHS and Frank Thompson from Humbolt, Nebraska. During the year, Judy Simpson left school to get married. At the end of the year, Ellen Bosh transferred to Wathena High School and Pam Hart graduated with the HHS class of '67. Our projects during the year included selling birthday calendars, picking up corn, concession stand at ball games, and the candy machine at school. One of the highlights of the year was the selection of our Ivy League class rings. By Courage and Faith We Win was selected as our class motto, colors chosen were Siamese pink and silver, the class flower was the pink rose. Our Junior year we were the hosts to the J unior-Senior Banquet and Prom held at the Maple Leaf Restaurant and the Allen Field House April 29. We left and returned in a car caravan es- corted by the Highway Patrol. The entrance to the Field House was decorated with Blue Paper with the theme Gone With The Wind printed on it. A small Magnolia tree was next to the door. At the north end of the room was a Mansion where the band stood. The south end was decorated with a steam boat. On the west and east sides were the refreshment tables. Surround- ing the room were pillars decorated with garlands of red and yellow roses. At twelve o'clock the mystery and enchantment of the evening ended. We started our last year with the election of the following officers: Greg Miller, President, Gary Nuzum, Vice-President, Jackie Herring, Secretaryg Linda Murphy, Treasurer, and Paul Batchelder, Sgt. at Arms' Our sponsors were Miss Kemper and Mr. Hutchcraft. In the fall we hosted the Freshman Initiation Dance. To raise money for our Senior sneak we picked up corn, had a turkey raffle, and held a senior work day. In December Barbara Alfrey got married. Both Ronnie Rhodd and Boyd Nuzum quit school. Bright-eyed and bushy tailed, thirty-four members of the Senior class left the metropolis of Highland at 3:30 Friday morning April 19-destination Kalfran Lodge in the Ozarks. Our spon- sors for the trip were: Mrs. Cyril Lackey, Miss Kemper, and Mr. and Mrs. Hutchcraft. After being informed as to the laws of the lodge, we proceeded to our main goal of having fun. This included boating, swimming, skiing, horseback riding, seaplane rides, and extra curricular activ- ities such as shopping, riding bumper cars, and sliding down the giant slippery slide. We return- ed home at 4:30 p.m. Sunday after a fun-filled week end. May 4 we were the guests of the Junior class at the J unior-Senior Banquet and Prom held at the Maple Leaf Restaurant and Allen Field House. The theme was Isle of Golden Dreams. We want to thank the juniors for a wonderful night and a job well done. Our Baccalaureate service was held on Sunday, May 12, at the school auditorium. Now she is the head manager of the Veach, Veach, Veach 8a Veach Co-op gas station in the small community of Leona. To our great surprise, Edward Neibling didn't get his diploma signed. It seems that Ed didn't get a certain theme done so now his Dad is working him hard on the farm to pay for the stamps to mail the correspondence courses back and forth. When Ed was asked what went wrong, he replied, I never should have taken my luck for granted. Following graduation, Carol Smith decided that she would play the piano only for her own amusement. But after two years of Highland Junior College, Carol missed the bright lights of fame so she started playing again. Carol now plays for the Philharmonic Orchestra upon request. Roger Rush, who gave the teachers a tiny bit of trouble in high school, has suddenly changed for the better. Roger's employer at Sleeptight Mattress factory bet Roger S5 0,000 that he could't go without talking for one full year. Now, after ten months, Roger still has. no comment. Linda Murphy went to Jackson Hole, Wyoming in the summer following graduation to spend her vacation working on a dude ranch. She had planned to return to Highland Junior College when fall came, but she decided to stay on as trail leader because, she said, she was getting used to the environment. Linda plans to return to Highland someday and show-off her skills of leading people. Dane Forney decided to continue growing his hair and to start his own musical group. After four years of taking saxo- phone lessons, Dane finally made it in to a group who call themselves the Bears',. Dane now has his hair to the mid- dle of his back but still manages to keep it under his hat. Lillie Twombly attended three years at Kansas University after graduating from HHS. She didn't go the fourth year because her interest took her to Chicago to take up ballet. Lillie was accepted into the ballet school with flying colors mostly because of her grace and poise. Now Lillie is one of the world's most skilled ballet teachers and is well-known for her group, The Lillie-Belles. Roy Davis took up dog raising after HHS. He raises hounds for tourists so they can run over the countryside during their vacations. Roy enjoys his work because, as he says, when visitors ask him about his own dog, he points at Spot and replies, Here,s mine, where's yours?,' After graduation, Virginia Cole received a job as foreman in the milo and corn fields. Virginia is now head of the Garst 81. Thomas Co. in Coon Rapids. In her spare time, Virginia enjoys her hobby of taking care of her husband, Johnnie, and the three little Whetstines. Virginia is also taking a correspondence course from K-State in hopes of becoming aQPhys. Ed. teacher in the future. - Roger Rawles graduated from K-State in 7l', with an engineering degree-that is, 'train-engineering'. Roger now runs the Cannonball between Pixley and Hooterville just to pass the time away. Jackie Herring enrolled in HCJ C summer school to try to graduate in one year, but her plans were changed when she decided to join VISTA. Jackie spent two years in VISTA and is now settled down in the Congo with that tall, dark, and handsome stranger. Bill Butrick took a good turn toward running around after HHS. Bill attended HCJ C for two years and was selected as the girls' favorite sweetheart. Bill is now attending Oklahoma University where he is 'trying' to study to be a dentist, but he is very distracted by all his girl customers. Elizabeth Hedrick went to California after graduation to look up her long-lost friends. She started singing ir1 the popular coffee-house, the 'Split-Scene', Now Liz is singing her way around the world to meet new and interesting people. Frank Thompson decided to go into business with his Dad at good ole HCJ C. Frank says he enjoys his job-mostly the environment. But Frank's job won't stop hereg UCLA is looking for a good window-washer and, just maybe, Frank will be accepted. Pat Shelton went to Topeka after graduation and started working for Hallmark Cards. She is also attending Clark busi- ness school, and also seems to bug around in her Vaux Hall. '75,-aff:-7:5gy ':1..LrF'l'FM-' Wayne Sutherland went on to two years at J uco and two years at K1State, but before he got in to graduate school, Uncle Sam got him. Wayne joined the Air Force. Now he owns his own airplane and lives in the Ozarks giving plane rides to visiting seniors on their sneaks. Upon graduation, Virginia Lentz went to Manhattan where she was employed as a hat-checker at the New Yorker's Club. Virginia meets new people every day and it seems that everyone is forever asking her about her true color of hair. Photographers say that her hair really shows up in colored pictures. Leroy Lutes went straight to KU after graduation. Now he has completed his Modern Science Degree and now has de- cided to start his own school of Technology. Leroy is trying to prove that even the dumb can become successful. Isn't that right, Leroy?? After going steady for three years in high school, Charlott Loyd decided to take that big step and get married, but then Charlott wasn't quite satisfied, so she talked Bill into letting her go to college just for a while. Charlott is taking a course in Parliamentary Procedure so she can know how to call Bill to supper. Lawrence Simpson joined the army after high school and was sent to Okinawa. After three years, Lawrence reenlisted because, so he said, Someone has to represent our Class of '68. Lawrence has now settled down and has chosen the army as a career. Colonel Simpson and his family write back at least once a week to let us know the situation. Nancy Noll took her nickname, 'Noodle', to heart and now owns her own noodle factory in Massachusetts. Along with her factory, Nancy has taken up a course in dressmaking. Many people -like Nancy's creations, especially the latest one, a spaghetti dress. My only warning, Nancy says, is, don't wear it to a dinner partyf' Paul Batchelder attended two years at KU then on to Harvard University in Massachusetts. After graduation from Harvard, Paul thought he would roam Massachusetts to see what he could see. Much to his surprise, Paul ran in to his old HHS sweetheart, Nancy, and decided it was time for him to settle down. They now live in the country in Vermont where they relax and live on Nancy's Noodle money. Upon graduation, Mildred Rush started a career in mechanical engineering, but she decided she couldn't take all the elbow-grease. She went to a different college to become a doctor, but within 3 months, Millie decided that being a doctor wan't for her. She next took a flying course to become a pilot but changed her mind after being cooped up in the cockpit during flights. Now Mildred is attempting to be a parachutist but is still trying to decide whether or not to jump out of the plane. Frank Cluck decided he'd try a year of college before settling down to farming. But after the year was up, Frank wanted to go on and keep up his new interest, journalism. Within a year after graduation from college, Frank was hired as the head editor of the New York Tribune. After Susan Windmeyer graduated, she went to college with Frank but quit and got a job, because, she said she had no use for school. Finally she hooked Frank. Sue, who isn't the one for city life, persuaded Frank to live in the country and raise chickens. But it seems as though Sue and Frank had an argument as to whose name they would use in naming the farm. Finally, after much confusion and debate, they decided on the Cluck 8: Cluckv Chicken farm. Gary Nuzum went to KU for four years of studying law. He then joined the Bar Association of New York and after many long years of work, was appointed to the position of Attorney General after one of his 'buddies' received the Presidency. Now when Gary comes back to Doniphan County, in his chauffeur-driven limousine, his favorite pastime is to get out his overalls and take a spin on his '1 lO'. Why, who is that beautiful red head over there? Son of a gun, if it isn't our own Dorothy Dale.!' After graduation Dale Rosenberger went to beautification school and now has a different color of hair for each month of the year. Dale has decided that, for the month of December this year, she will dye her hair gray, then frost it red and green. Dale says, It's just to get in the spirit of Christmas. Rick Sabbert went straight in to show biz after graduation. He didn't need very much training because he just had to act himself. If you really want to see Rick in his act, hels on every day at four o'clock in the afternoon. Just tune in and see Captain 'Duh-dley'. Beverly Lackey decided after being an F.F.A. attendant, that all girls should get to tangle with goats and greasy pigs for one time in their life. So Bev has started the FPCA fFuture Pig Catcheris Associationj for all girls in high school. But she and her hubby, Gary, still argue over who gets to feed the pigs. Glnni After graduation, James Foster worked all summer on his '53 Chevy to prepare it for the Daytona 500. Jim started four weeks ahead of time for Florida so his Chevy would have time to recuperate. In the race Jim started behind but after a couple of laps, he was pushing in third, Jim gave a couple of extra pushes and went on to win the race. When Jim came back to Highland, you could tell he was very proud because he donated his Chevy as a monument to HHS. Surprisingly enough, Annette J eschke went to two years of HCJC before she traveled around the world in search of that one guy. She finally decided to come back to her old flame in Sabetha. Now she and her hubby Mike, live in the Andes while they raise their prize-winning goats and kids. Ken Herring went into the advertising business after graduation. He now works for the Volkswagen company in Chicago. Ken is well-known for his commercials and Volkswagen sales have boomed. Now he and his sweetheart live in Chicago next to Ken's firm. Every now and then you'll hear one of the little Herrings repeating daddy's slogan, Beep, Beep. Wayne Gaul took track to heart and entered KU on a track scholarship. Wayne wakes every morning, runs around the campus, eats breakfast, and then goes back to bed. Wayne is giving up grades for track because, as he says, I'd rather run, run, run than work, work, work. Janet Neibling flunked her entrance exams to HCJ C so she decided to take a secretarial course from the famous Nancy Taylor school. Janet finished the course with flying colors and is one of the most Wanted ??? secretaries now working. After graduation, Greg Miller joined the Marines and was transferred to the South Pacific. Greg served his four ,years in which time he was awarded medals for bravery and strategic service. Greg is now one of the nominees for the pathfinder award. Greg says he enjoys the Marines but someday plans to return to Highland so he can take up running aroundn. Dan Tilton went to two years of HCJC and on to two years at KU majoring in mechanical engineering. Dan now is an official member of the American Mechanics Association. Dan now runs a motor shop in Highland and has the best looking office and car around because his wife, Nancy, just loves to redecorate. As we look around the room, our eye catches a most outstanding figure. By her dress and gestures you can tell this ?lady'? is one of elegance. Nancy Nuzum took up interior decorating while attending HCJC for two years and now has a bundle. Nancy is finally getting paid for all the advice she passes out. f xv fy , A ,X Aw X' A f :M f I 2 'W fffy 2 Mfrs I!
