HAWLEY’S HOBBY There are many new people here at Highland for the 1980-81 school year, and one of these is Associate Principal Mr. Joseph Hawley. Mr. Hawley has been with District one for twenty-two years. In 1958, he spent his first year teaching sixth grade. To finish out that year and another full year, he moved to the newly opened Monterrey Elementary School, once again teaching the sixth grade. Then, in 1962. Mr. Hawley advanced to the position principal at Monterrey and stayed through 1975. From there, he moved back to Bertha Heid as principal though the spring of 1979. He was then transferred to the administration building last year and worked within the whole district. Now. for his twenty-third year, he is with our school as an associate to the principal. Mr. Hawley is highly impressed with the student body here at Highland. Although he feels. I can't come in and have people accept me. it takes time.” he still knows that students respect him and feel comfortable with him. One of the Hawley enjoys is tennis. For exercise in leisure time. Mr. Hawley plays tennis, camps and fishes. Mr. Hawley has a broad outlook for the future. He feels confident in himself and the student body. The motto that he lives by helps him to feel this way: Every human being has dignity and should be treated accordingly!” ON THE RUN Some people say that nice guys come only once in every dozen. That may be so. but Highland is blessed with three and one with of them is Mr. Billy Hufford. In his thirteenth year in the district. Mr. Hufford accepted the position as assistant principal here at Highland. In the past, he has been in charge of coordination for special students, which he really loved, but I always wanted to be at the high school level, that was my goal in life. now it seems, he has reached his goal. Mr. Hufford's job at Highland is mainly enforcing the new attendance policy and handling the disciplinary measures needed in areas where correction is mandatory. Mr. Hufford also assists the principal. Mr. Polito. and schedules events. In the past. Mr. Hufford would travel from building to building within the district. Now he must stay in one building and he feels that is a big adjustment. He feels welcome by the students and is happy. For enjoyment. Mr. Hufford has many hobbies. One of his main hobbies is coordinator for the Special Olympics. As a ten year veteran of the program, he feels that it is very rewarding. He is state basketball and track coach for the special athletes and loves every minute of it. Other hobbies are making things out of wood, riding horses and running daily. Mr. Hufford is a sentimental man. He has always remembered what his brother told him long ago. I cried because I had no shoes until I saw someone who had no feet. I guess that is really how I feel.” he says. Mr. Hufford believes Everyone should think positive and live a full and happy life.” 145
