Cross Country is a very tough and under rated sport. As Coach Greene put it. “It’s just you. your legs and around and around. A very unfortunate car accident put the two top runners out for the season. Greg McMahill who was very seriously hurt and Mark Charleston, who will probably not begin running again until spring 81. Although Greg and Mark are out for the year, the team has not given up and have kept their spirits high. Top Left: The Cross Country Team takes off for practice. The all-around gymnast competes in four areas , vault, uneven parallel bars, balance beam, and floor exercise. Jodi Mazzocco is Highland’s top senior all-around gymnast. Another outstanding senior is Michelle Fletcher, she is a specialist on the vault. Linda Haseltine. also a senior, specializes on vault and balance beam. Coach Linder said. The seniors are all top specialists in their field and we need them all.” Unfortunately the team has been plagued by injury all through the year including sprained ankles and wrists. The scoring system is gymnastics is complicated. Six girls compete in the areas but only the top five girls scoring the highest are added together for a team score. Judges score the girls on a scale of I -10. 10 being the best with only two judges working each area. The toughest competition for the team this season is Northglenn according to Coach Linder. No matter how the season turns out. Highland gymnasts will always be on top ©so rai mms 109
