The High Society Play--The Sounds of Today The Science Club presented its fourth annual Sounds of Today. Masters of ceremony, Jeri Waite and Bob Rowe, added to the fun. Singers were accented by the colorful lights. They were backed by the beat of the LOTTERY, our local band, and the HIGH SOCIETY from Mansfield. The Sounds of Today included: Barb Ault, Kathy Castle, Linda Deffinger, Glena Moss, Mike Follin, Dora Mathias, Terry Davis, Cheryl Evans, Penny jones and jenny Phillips. Our 1968-69 Homecoming was people--the team, the band, cheerleaders, alumni, and the Football crowd. Queen Phyllis is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Dial of Route 2, Mt. Vernon, Ohio. Phyllis is co-editor of the Annual Staff, active in G.A.A., and is also a member of the Honor Society. This past summer Phyllis had the honor of attending Buckeye Girls State. Come and get me! 19 Stairway to the Stars Each of us shed our winter shell and reached for a star as we danced and dreamed to the strains of the orchestra on a lovely evening in May. Formals, Tux, High-fashioned Coif- fures, Bow Ties, Heels, and of course, Cupid, made the scene just perfect. Suspense was also present as the favor- ite Senior Boy and Girl were selected and presented gifts. A romantic, superb evening passed all too quickly as we traveled the Stair- way To The Stars in ecstatic enjoy- ment. Most Popular Senior Boy and Girl--Phyllis and Gareth. Camelot, the theme for the Winter Formal held in the cafeteria March 8, was decorated as a castle with a cafe in the west hall. The lobby was transformed into a lovely spring garden. We were enter- tained by the Linden- McKinley Dance Band, Mr. Snyder and other local singers performed. 22 SPORTS '68-'69 Varsity Cheerleaders Left to rightg Patty Patrick, Barbara Griffith, Linda Peggy Fisher. Highland's C-L Squad-For V-I-C-T-O-R-Y Cheerleaders spur the teams on 24 Kempton, Linda Deffinger, Belinda Vfhite, Ceful Fans-Obviously! Varsity Football Cheerleaders Look Pretty for the Camera Man. Ideas pop from the imaginations of our Varsity C-L Squad to light the fires of enthusiasm for our Fighting Scotts. They tirelessly practice routines and go all out to prepare clever assemblies and forceful slogans that kindle the spark. Reserve Squad, Marla Knapp, Frankie Salyers, Vicki Higgins, Sharon Bushong. The 1968-69 Fighting Scotts Cheerleaders participated in everything from selling spirit ribbons to attending summer camp in West Virginia. They earned three first place awards, one sec- ond, and an honorable mention with the help and guidance of Miss Kay Cross. This year's Cheerleading squad displayed superb skills and spirit cheering for the athletic teams. W 1 , 1 X ' , , Coach Adams gives l 1 . S ., -all Words of Wisdom 28 The weather was hot when the season started making it difficult for players and fans alike. Then along with the weather the Scotts were plagued with injuries, centering around the Seniors. After dropping the first game with Fredericktown 48 to 10, the Scotties de- feated Olentangy 28--O. Then after 4 set- backs the fighting Scotts delivered a blast to Cardington 34 to 22. The next game was with our toughest rival, Marion Catholic. It was hard fought all the way with the score tied several times, then with an extra burst of effort, the Irish won 54--32. The final game of the season set a high scoring record for the school with 65 points to Ridgemount's 16. This was the game in which the Scotts could do no wrong. I it Gareth and John make the tackle. Basketball The '68-'69 Fighting Scotts Head Coach, Gary Vaughng Assistant Coach, Marshall Glenn. 29 The fighting Scotts started the 68-69 season with a bang, defeating Danvill 57 to 47. Then after several setbacks, Highland rendered Big Walnut its first League loss, setting them out of first place contention. Midway Scotts were battling hard for 2nd place in the Mid-Ohio defeating Cardington in a hard fought Confer- ence battle. The high point of the season was the defeat of Buckeye Valley, one of the top teams in the league 3 to 2. The team was the youngest in the Mid-Ohio losing only 3 seniors. The future of next years team looks very promis- ing. Track and field events have caught on even for the girls who had their own track team competing with other sport minded girls. This is an honor most boys only dream of, but the young men in this group all proved that they are the tops in their field. One of the club's projects is to handle the coat check at basketball games. Another is the annual bonfire before the Homecoming game. The second phase is the Book-Subscription sales to complete the payments for production. Again we rely upon the Seniors as this is an all-class function. Third, but not the least, comes the planning of the book, arranging for photographers to take pictures, making dummy layouts, writing copy, editing and cor- recting the final pages, then mailing the pages to the printer. They practice love of country and thrift. F.F.A. also encourages improvement of scholarship. Two major social affairs which F.F.A. sponsored were: The Annual Community FFA Bar-B-Q and programg The Annual Community Lion's Day Bar-B-Q. The final project this year was the plant- ing of Maple trees around the school. They take part in competitions for speech and for Ag. prizes at County and State Fairs. The purpose of the Science Club is to promote interest in science research through science projects and science fairs. The club sponsored the traditional Shindig. The theme was Sounds of Today. The money helped with the expenses on the Science Club trip. The students traveled from Detroit to Canada. It was a very fun and rewardingtrip. These students work and study in a four-hour block of time on skills, subject-matter, and atti- tudes. The content of the material varies in order to try to meet the needs of the individual student and to aid him in the development of his own per- sonal talents. The program is aimed at training the student for a stenographic, or a clerical job after graduation. Many representatives from different companies come to talk about job requirements and opportuni- ties. Field trips to industrial plant offices and to indi- vidual-type offices are made each semester in order to acquaint students with actual procedures.
