The Scots, under the direction of Head Coach, Paul Adams, finished the season with a 6-2-1 record mark and the Third Place in the Mid-Ohio Conference League. Some of the accomplishments included the first Highland Homecoming Victory and a five-game Winning streak! Conference Honors wentto Don Davidson, Gene Kanagy, and Bill Irvine who made the First Team of Mid- Ohio League for 1967. Don Davidson was also a 1966 member of Mid Ohio First Team. He was named the Leading Scorer for Mid Ohio, 1967, receiving Honorable Mention on the All- Ohio Team. Don was also chosen as a member of the First Team of All-Central Ohio for 1967. Retta, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Noble, Route 43 Mt. Gilead, Ohio, reigned supreme over a Homecoming scene that proved rather damp. She is active in Student Council, and is a four year student of business education. The Homecoming scene was wet and muddy, but was brightened up by the presence of the queen and her beautiful court. A lot of time and effort was put forth by the Seniors to make Homecoming night a memorable one. We feel that they succeeded because it was just that. Last year's queen, Diana Bushong, placed the crown upon the head of Queen Retta. Faithfully performing despite the rain, was our colorful band. A little rain couldn't dampen the hearts and spirit of our student body and friends. ' d S ' Att dant Ga are escorted by team captains Davidson and Throckmorton. The Court and friends are seen covered with plastic for pro- tection from the rain that poured as usual! 31 A misty-eyed Retta is crowned by 1967 queen, Diana Bushong. Operation-Pep-Rally Day Wildfire at Night. On the cold tangy eve before Homecoming, a super-glowing Bonfire set off the jet action for an all-day expression of our intense feeling of loyalty and support for our teams and school. During the day everyone reached the point of organized confusion . Hats, spirit jugs, and cheers rang long and loud through the corridors, and even the classrooms. And, as if that in itself isn't a shocker, that your students are witches, and your fellow faculty members belonged to the same classification? Well, it happened in the junior Class Play to Steve Wharton, played by Tom Webb. He came out very well in the end, being only a little frightened, a little more believing in witches, and with a girlfriend, Junelle Kempt, played by Peggy Fisher. Also, a better knowledge of witchcraft was supplied to him by the students and faculty members of Craft College. An exorcism performed by Mother Hecaty releases Junelle from an eerie spirit. In their new outfits consisting of short sleeved blouses, hip stitched skirts, and navy vests, they were a Scottie vision. Such capability to yell came with practice from experience of a week at camp. Each morn ing they braved the dawn to learn new routines and compete for honors. Enlivening our pep rallies were the skits presented by the squad. They were usually brief, comical, and inspiring. One such skit proved to be a mystery. No one on the team could find Little Miss Victory. Where could she possibly be hiding? The answer came in a flash as Belinda, our Little Miss Victory, came forth from under the table, proclaiming' her love for the Fighting Scots. They attempt to meet each student on his own level in language and reading skills and strive to stimulate each student to progress so that each has a satisfactory background for advancement outside of the school program. The aims and objectives of this year's program is to teach the student to com- municate effectively in all situations. New methods were incorporated. The students attended speech contests. The World History Department is at- tempting to bridge the gap between the study of history and a deep investigation into the history being unfolded before our eyes everyday in the modern world. By a periodic survey of current trends in society through magazines, such as WORLD WEEK, perhaps this will make void the idea that history is a dull and antiquated subject. The Department hopes to make the study of world history meaningful to the student living in this ever-changing world. Mr. Jones is trying to develop an appre- ciation in the students for the brotherhood of man through the study of man's growth and development from early primitive so- cieties to our affluent society of today. Randy Bush, a Sophomore at Highland , has grasped some of the understanding Mr. Jones is teaching. Randy received First place in the TIME MAGAZINE current Affairs Review Contest. Science Develops Inquiring Mz'nds Mr. Cherrington performs a Chemistry experiment. Mr. Throckmorton uses many concrete examples and displays. I as The main objective of the Science Department is to develop inquiring minds along the lines of science and mathematics. Mr. Cherrington and Mr. Throckmorton do their best to motivate this interest. Mr. Cherrington probes the Wonders of nature in his classes of Physics and Chemistry. During lab periods, students learn to question and to find solu- tions to their questions. Mr. Cherrington also teaches the science of Math in Algebra,II, Geometry, and Trigonometry courses. Mr. Throckmorton involves the minds of his stu- dents in questions on their environment and general sciences. With the use of visual aids, he demonstrates answers to questions students may have. With careful study of demonstrations, the students can see, define, and solve problems for themselves. Mrs. Fulton uses special equipment for many class demonstrations. Mr. Rice teaches Math. The objectives he tries to instill in his students are: recognition of the need for mathematics, a desire for im- provement in their mechanical skill, and a knowledge of thought processes. This year the textbook was updated to more nearly coincide with a modern course of study. Biology To teach awareness and observation, Mrs. Fulton requires student field trips and experi- mental projects. The students collect insects and plants to use in the classroom. The National Honor Society is organized to pro- mote excellence of achievement in scholarship, leadership, character, and service. This year a mock trial was held in which the defendants, or prospective members were discussed as to their qualifications. Speakers of the Defense were Gay Geckley, Glena Moss, Linda Burns, and Gary Fuller. Bailiff, Bob Hartwell, often had to quiet Prosecuting Attorney, Gary Gallogly. How- ever, Judge Ufferman pronounced all the defendants worthy of membership in the organization. President Randy Ufferman V.
