Svening Adult Scdool The Highland Evening Adult School was established during the school year 1949-50 after many requests by interested adults who wished to continue their education. Therefore in the early part of 1950 the first students, about 65 of them, were admitted to classes covering all grades from 1 to 12. These students studied under the direction of Mrs. Daisie H. Adams, Mrs. Ruth J. Benson, Miss Myrtle Pryor, and under Rev. Oscar Graham, who also served as first director of the Evening Adult School. The school has always attempted to meet the needs of the people of the community, therefore, among its graduates are several ministers, business men, labor¬ ers, housewives, and one who later enrolled in junior college. Over the years a dedicated group of teachers have served the educational needs of the students. Their salary has been very small, but their great interest in the service they were rendering transcended any thought of financial gain. The present teachers, who can be seen standing in the left background of the picture below, are Miss Maxine Ormond, Mrs. Mildred Sadler, Director, and Mrs. Marie Hall Jones. They have con¬ tinued to devote time and energy to the program and have made contributions far beyond that ordinarily expected of them. With the beginning of the school year 1961-62 a new era will begin for the Evening Adult School. An effort then will be made to co-ordinate its work with that of the Industrial Education Center here. More courses will probably be offered, thus giving additional oppor¬ tunities for self improvement of the students. SOME MEMBERS OF ADULT EVENING SCHOOL 72
