Back in the 1850’s, naturalist Henry David Thoreau predicted that Maine would become a tree¬ less wasteland. But he underestimated the abil¬ ity of man and nature working together to renew the forest. Today, Maine has the greatest percentage of forestland of any state in the Union. Which proves that, with man and nature working together, our forests can last forever—and can be logged forever. One example: The Robert H. Gardiner forest¬ land in Maine. Owned by the same family since 1754, it has yielded four timber harvests for generations since then. Yet, it still provides the wildlife habitat, watershed protection, recreation and the scenic splendor Thoreau talked about. We call it sharing the land through multiple use. Another example: Much of the Great Southern forest that some said was gone forever” back in the 1920’s has been harvested at least once since. Today, the Southern forest supplies about 50% of the pulp, 40% of the plywood and 30% of the lumber made in the U.S. That’s what good forest man¬ agement is all about. The forest industry has already shown that it can produce twice as much wood fiber per acre as public lands. That means developing supe¬ rior tree strains, thinning, fertiliz¬ ing, and harvesting like any good farmer. It also means the same forest is providing recreation, wildlife habitat , scenic beauty, watershed Commercial forest is described as that portion of the total forest which is capable and available for growing trees for harvest. Parks, Wilderness and Primitive Areas are not included. protection and timber harvest. Industry forestlands are al¬ ready working double time. All landowners must do the same if we’re going to meet the next generation’s voracious demand for wood. (The U.S. Forest Service has said we’re going to need nearly twice as much wood in 25 years.) We can do it. If federal and state forestry agencies adequately manage 136 million acres of pub¬ licly-owned commercial forest And if the four million private individuals—farmers and others who own 59% of the nation’s commercial woodlands—manage their lands for increased timber productivity as well as recreation and wildlife. We can have our wood. And our woods, too. If we act now. Trees. The renewable resource. We st va co 90 Compliments of THE BATH COUNTY NATIONAL BANK CLARKSON AND WALLACE INC.
