John B. Reynolds Principal B.S. - Bridgewater College M.A. — University of Virginia The challenge of learning and of growing up, the urge to create, the demands of citizenship and responsibility-all these confront the first grader entering Monterey Elementary School. Yet each must seek to define his own purpose and fulfill it in his own way. A growing library, compensatory classes, a school kiln for firing pottery, inter-grade sports events, and scholastic con¬ tests are available to the growing student. With the use of these resources and the aid of a willing faculty, the departing seventh grader is prepared to meet the greater challenges of higli school, and the even greater one of living a useful and productive life. 53 ADMINISTRATION In addition to his duties as principal, Mr. Reynolds spends half of his time teaching upper level Science and Physical Education. Highland County Schools would be impotent without their bus drivers. Here Simmons, Moyers, and Ruckman await the first bell rush. 1 1 1 -Si 3: i i 1 1 Monterey’s cooks keep its gleaming kitchen in perfect order, in addition to preparing about 200 meals a day. Each month, students showing the traits of good citizenship are selected by their teachers and classmates to be “Citizens of the Month.” First and second graders didn’t let their youth keep them from devising clever costumes. Above are the winners in the Primary division. ACTIVITIES Living great distances from the school does not prevent students from participating in an active extra-curricular life. Chorus and Band meet weekly. Sports events are held between grades. There is the Halloween Carnival, Christ¬ mas Program, Spring Music Festival, and the Science and Art Exhibits. Eight students from Monterey Elementary were chosen to represent the school in the County Spelling Bee.
