We sing thy glory and thy fame, And praises to thy honored name. Come and join us while we sing, We'll make the nearby hillsides ring. Our faith in thee will never die, We'll always love thee, Highland High. ‘eS A school, like an art gallery, expresses many facets of life. The HIGHLANDER shows how a student’s character develops throughout the year from a rough sketch to a finished portrait, just as the strokes of the master develop the tone and color necessary to create the finished master- piece. Each room of the gallery contains a different type of art: portraits, landscapes, still life, sketches, op art, pottery, and sculptures. The school’s gallery contains art of a differ- ent nature: sports, music, academic subjects, clubs, and most important of all — the students. Now let us explore the contents of Highland’s 1970 DOLMONO.. Vermillion is the superintendent of the Highland School District. During his ten- ure at Highland, Mr. Vermillion has seen a 55 per cent increase in student enrollment (since 1960) and a major addition of class- rooms to the high school. His primary role as executive officer of the School Board is to carry out the Board’s policies and recom- mendations, as well as suggesting new ideas of his own. It has been through his efforts that a guidance department, library, and graphic arts program have been established. When asked his opinion about high school students, he expressed faith in the student’s behavior and knowledge, and noted the fact that today’s teens can “think for themselves.” PIP OF MIT AH i hos aot Bae oh Members of the SCHOOL BOARD are as follows: Standing, Mr. William Kelly, Mr. Robert Schmelzer, Seated, Mrs. Evelyn Brunskill, Clerk; Mr. Lewin O. The cooks spend many hours plan- ning well-balanced, nutritious lunches, while the office staff keeps the files, sells essential material to the stu- dents, and assists in making the school operate efficiently. Mr. Brenner, as vice-principal, has the job of enforcing discipline among the students. He is also in charge of attendance and the various clubs and activities. The librarian has a tremendous job to fulfill in organizing and sorting the books and magazines for the conven- ient use of the students. 16 S oo Mr. Brenner, Assistant Principal Mrs. Brunskill, Clerk Mrs. Webster, Secretary Mr. Shook, Custodian a AY TENTION VISUAL-AID — Bottom: G. The students who help in the office and guidance departments gain experience that will be helpful in their future occupations. There are also many able assistants who receive experience working in the school library. The audio-visual team runs the projectors and other equipment, and the cafeteria helpers wash dishes, clean tables and collect milk money for the convenience of the students and cooks. The departments which obtain this assistance are very grateful to those who volunteer their services. CAFETERIA HELP — Top: B. Dalton, G. Plotz, K. Hier, B. Savage, D. Moyseenko, B. Gori, N. They have im- proved their cheers during their practice sessions and have created new ones such as “Have you got the spirit?” One of their many creative ideas was to substitute cheers for the period bells on the day of the Homecoming game. The Junior Varsity, in addition to cheering with the varsity cheerleaders and helping them sell pro- grams during the football season, they also cheer at the J.V. basketball games. Mrs. Ramey should be commended for a fine job in advising and coaching these eleven girls. Junior Varsity: B. Hammond, D. Barnes, L. Johnson, S. Papp, C. Head Majorette Candy Kelly Senior 40 Nina Anderson Sophomore Majorettes Our hard-working majorettes practice long hours to achieve the twirling precision and timing necessary for the squad to present an interesting performance. A new routine, devised each week, must be correlated to the tempo of the band music. If a number such as “Can-Can” is played, the majorettes use a lot of twirling action. A slow, stately number such as “Scarborough Fair’ requires a graceful and smooth routine. Their hard work has payed off, for our Scottish lassies do a fine job and certainly add sparkle to the half-time show. These students, while tak- ing the courses required for graduation, also gain experience working at various jobs in the school and community. This year, Medina County has made two pro- jects available to these students. The first is a Pre-Vocational Learning Center. The purpose of this small-scale factory is to provide workers with some on-the-job experience. The other pro- ject is the Mobile Vocational Lab, which provides materials for working and vocations. 65 Freshmen ian Alber Carey Arico Ralph Baratko James Basham Mark Avery Joanne Baker Br Berger Beynon 1S 1a id Berger Joseph Blynn ichael Bolas M David Beck Marc Dav Denn i N _ | N — N oo 2 SBNODE Onomao mom on ‘eal SHM Se ae B's 5 wa [) D ew @) = ol iy Armeavum tof) = =e ‘a [a0] ra SS ) Boa © S50 le ee Hoy one MOPpeass ohm AO Sa ona Re roee POOEBHSE BH on oS memoOMmAA, ider 3 ta] a g Se 2.8 auosss TV ELSO Glee aOoHEOS HO wR BOSC bg Shupag a5 OD NSS SEHHOAS h 1C h ke illon tin D Terry Doutric i Bruce Dalton Cheryl Dearth ietr Mar Gail D Barbara Di Philip Duke Renee Duta Gayle Dutt Tim Eldred Wayne Etela Dan Farnsworth 66 John Fieg Penny Ford Nancy Gaj Michael Geib Jeff Getson Dennis Goik Sharon Gray William Hange Marvin Harmon Robert Harvey Joan Hemminger Jerry Henderson Gary Henry Lou Ann Hier Ronald Hill Robin Hotchkiss David Hughes Victor Hughes David Jackson Laurie Jacobson Clayton Johnson Richard Kasacavage Sandra Kendel Barb Kilarsky Mark Koenig Gayle Kshywonis Kathie Kunkel Larry Ladin Mark Lamphear Jeff LaSalle Roxanne Little Becky Lockhart Nancy Lonsbury Brian Lorman Dianne Lundquist Patricia Lyons Jerry McVay Jim Manack Scott Marikis Cynthia Martin Pamela May Michael Maynard Michael Meyers Dana Miller Jeff Miller Terry Moell John Moses Nancy Mudd Danny Muren Jeff Nelson William Noland Scott Noss Thomas Paisley Jeffrey Parker Allan Paytosh Robert Paytosh Rexford Pennington Shelby Peters Charles Pfister Jeffrey Pike Mary Pilko Anthony Pischieri Kathy Polland Sandra Powell Stephen Price Dale Puskas Michael Radebaugh Vickie Reagle Mark Redel Steven Reeves Richard Rinehart Robert Ritcher Steven Robson Patricia Roll Susan Russell Richard Scheid Ken Schnedetz James Scholz Sandra Sexton Richard Seymour Bruce Shade Chester Simmons William Simmons Elizabeth Sir Louis Lynne Skrocki Jerry Smith Yvonne Smith Edith Snell Terese Spellacy Clair Spice James Eyerdom President CLASS COLOR: Blue and Gold CLASS FLOWER: Yellow Rose MOTTO: “A man should choose with careful eye the things to be remembered by.” Leslie Cordle Karen Chimento Valerie Tramonte Vice-President Secretary Treasurer FRESHMEN NOT PICTURED Arnold Anderson, Carla Baldwin, Diane Brown, Leo Brown, Sandra Bryson, Karen Buck, Gregory Depas, Rebecca Drews, Kirk Ewing, Michael Glaser, Sandra Gutfranski, Steven Hale, Jack Edward Gerspacher, James Sloan, Linzey Sloan, Debra Snyder, Karen Topliff, Mark Truxall, Frank Underwood, Denise Winters. 69 Denise Sprankle Charles Sprosty Eugene Stamm Linda Stiles Lois Stiles Robert Swank Hope Tanner Scott Taylor Gail Thomas Larry Thomas Marlene Thompson Scott Thorne Carol Toth Kathy Truxall Beth Tuttle Carol Vanko Nancy Van Meter Richard Wagar Dwayne Weigle Denise Weiss Diana Wentink Gary Wershing Luana West Robin Whitam Jeff Winland John Wise Steven Winters Jeff Wolf Paul Wright Bill Zimmermon Jon Zumbrunnen NATIONAL National Honor Society Leadership, Scholarship, Service, and Character, these four qualities are found in the members of the National Honor Society. During their first year as a club, they have acquired speakers and prepared a mother-daughter potluck sup- per. In addition, they make their own refreshments at the regular meetings. Their very approporiate motto is “Know; care; do; the world awaits you!” OFFICERS — P. Gathagan, President; Mr. Brenner, Advisor; J. Capra te Secretary-Treasurer; D. Miller, Publicity; C. Martin, Vice- resident. 80 The purpose of Campus Life, Y. F. C., is two-fold. First, this club is to interest non-church young people in spiritual concepts. Secondly, Cam- pus Life is to train Christian young people to become better Christian leaders. This interdenominational club not only stresses these two points but offers fellowship with students from all religions. The object of these pur- poses combined is to learn about and to get to know the person of Jesus Christ in a real, personal way, and to share this person to others in the Highland school. Advisor, Mrs. Viering, an expert skier; J. Tuttle, Treas.; C. Martin, Sec.; B. Cadnum, Pres., D. Doutrich, V. P. Shades of Jean-Claude Killy! All we hear are words like ‘‘snowplow,” “slalom,” ‘‘t-bar”’ and “‘shush” from the Ski Club, one of the most popular additions to our school activities this year. At the slopes of Boston Mills, our skiers are immortalized every Wednesday evening as they practice after their group lesson. Although there have been no major in- juries, some of the group have experienced the sensation of being a human snowball. But, as a true skier knows, “all’s fun at the slopes”! Po 81 The purpose of El Club de Espanol is to promote the Spanish language, customs, and culture. In December, the club had its second annual Christ- mas party, during which a candy- filled pinato was broken by the blush- ing Senorita Radwanski. Other high- lights of the evening included caroling in Spanish, a ten-cent gift exchange, and the delicious refreshments. In addition, some members pur- chased attractive pins carrying the Spanish Club insignia. Other members have participated in the matador act for Stunt Night and have written to pen pals in Spanish-speaking coun- tries. The club has concluded many fun- filled activities and until next year, Hasta la vista! 82 Seated: Miss Radwanski, Advisor; N. Lorman, Pres. Standing: D. Doutrich, Sec.; L. Schreiner, V.P.; R. The program involves thirty-five to forty boys who do not participate in intramural or winter sports. The exercises consist of forty-five minutes of weightlifting and station drills, for which many of the ‘“musclemen” donate their own weights. The program will be continued next year because of a grow- ing interest. 84 At the opening of a new decade, science is more important than ever before, and for those s tudents interested in chemistry, botany, zoology, and physics, there is the Science Club. The Sci- ence Club is the driving force behind the science fair. They are the organizers and preliminary judges of the projects, and some members enter prize-winning projects of their own. Due to the efforts of the club, the annual science fair dis- plays student ingenuity and helps to promote interest in science. Drama Club Drama Club, a new addition to the various clubs, has already been busy planning many exciting activities. With their advisor, Miss Chiara- monte, the club was able to attend a Drama Clinic presented by Kent State University. Not only were they able to see a musical production and an excellent pantomime but they also heard a drama critic speak. The banquet and dance were held in this oriental setting; chopsticks and pretty fans being souvenirs of the banquet, while elegant coiffures and flashy “tuxes’” were reminiscent of the dance. Held on a Sunday evening, it consists of a non-denominational service or- ganized by the local clergy, and special music sung by the Chapel Choir. This year, the message, “What is Truth,” was delivered by Reverend Peter Rudowski and ministers LeRoy Hart, Walter Ribbe, John Kusiak, and Har- old Winter participated in the prayers and scripture lessons. It is hoped that this short period of meditation will allow everyone to prepare himself to meet the future challenges he will face as a young American. 123 iC pay Commencement 1970 124 The eighteenth annual Commencement marked a milestone in the lives of 137 graduating Seniors. As the big event drew near and practice began in earnest, a quiet sense of accomplishment and expectation united the class as never before. Everyone seemed to realize that they were about to assume their place in society, and the joys and anxieties were shared by all. On Wednesday evening the class looked stunning in forest green and white robes, with gold honor cords adorning National Honor Society members. Dr. Fred E. Luchs addressed the group and speeches were also given by the valedictorian and salutatorian. Many awards were presented at Commencement, such as the Violet Richey Award, twenty dollars of which went to the valedictorian, Lynn Harvey, and an equal amount to Debbie Wecker, who distinguished herself on Latin and German scholarship tests. The Activity awards went to Tom McDuffee, Tom Ioanes, and Pam Gathagan for their outstanding contribu- tions to clubs and various other organizations. Pam also received the Highland Council Scholarship which is awarded to a promising Senior interested in teach- ing. In athletics the Charles Hardman Award was earned by Pat Holbert, for being the best all-around athlete, and in music, the John Philip Sousa Award was presented to Lynn Harvey, as the most outstand- ing Senior bandsman. However the best award was given to everyone — a hard-earned diploma. And when the tassels went from left to right, everyone had an award they could never lose or forget — an education, friends, and the memories of twelve wonderful years of life. 126 SENIOR DIRECTORY Baker, Allan James — “Al” — Chorus, Library Assistant Baker, Brenda Louise — ‘‘Bunnie”’ — Chorus, F.H.A., G.A.A., Ski Club Barker Carol Ann — “Cab” — F.H.A. Superior Composition Company Miss Debby Wecker High School Office Staff IN MEMORIAM Russell Lutton 151 Dear Reader, The last page of any book is the most rewarding, whether it be an epic or a dimestore paperback. We, the Staff, hope you enjoy our production, because although putting it together has been fun, it also induced “blood, ‘sweat, and tears.” In the tradition of good reporting we have tried to present an accurate and interesting. account of life at HHS, as we saw it. Only you, the student, may judge the result. As for the Seniors, we hope the book will be extrz special, because it is evidence of that precious time of life — the flowering of youth into young adulthood. For the rest of you, it is a glimpse into the future and a memory of the past. Thanks for buying the Highlander and may each suc- ceeding one be even better! ree tere Meat jeieitie: yeas it by 7) 2 vs 3 tra Foi nom esse SEY Siatmeine ma bt sae ete 0
