It is also a time of ripening and maturing of those growths begun in the spring. A season is . . .a time of harvesting and of preparing for a winter of rest. A period where everything exhibits its utmost in color. A season is. . - . a winter of snowy whiteness, brisk air, and a warmth of heart. It is a time for holidays and the spirit of peace and good will for all. A season is . . . a spring of fresh new beginnings. A melting of snow and a blooming of daffodils. It is a time for a rebirth of spirit and new hope for another good year. And as each season progresses, the leaves of the calendar are turned, unfolding a new school year, rich in beginnings, fulfill- ments and successes. The green leaves of summer provide shade for picnickers and for those who just like to loaf during a few free hours. The hot summer days bring out the area sunbathers in full force while others go on vacations, encountering new experiences, meeting new people, and visiting both new and old places. This summer also created a ''first'’ in Highland's history, that of having a newly-married couple, Sheryl and Jim Thompson, teaching in the school. From sprinting and running gauntlet, to scrimmage and shed drill, the sweat and strain of football practice seems hard and unending, but will result in a successful season. The boys begin practice two weeks before school opens, and by the first day of school are looking forward to that exciting first game. The newspaper staff provides a precise chronicle, spiced with witty humor, of day-to-day activities. Published monthly ,''The Stinger’ was made popular by its unique serial story, ''Sam Skerotus'', Dear Agnes’ column and imaginative cartoons. The staff's efforts have provided an enjoyable addition to student life and they deserve to be commended for a job well done. 42 The annual staff's many hard workers labor long hours to put out a good yearbook which will accurately and effec- tively picture the activities of the entire year. In trying to capture a complete effect, the members must be aware of past, present and future plans of the school. Often, we could hear Nancee mumbling to herself about little improvements that could be made from previous year's books and giving hints to next year's editors about 1970's book. Presently, layouts, advertising and copy must be coor- dinated with the varied ideas from the staff members. Scholastically, the two Violet Richie awards went to Nancee Kolarek, valedictorian, and Wendy Duke, semi-finalist in the state on scholastic achievement tests. Lynne Johnson received the Highland Council Scholarship which is awarded to an outstanding senior planning to go into the teaching pro- fession. This year also marked the first time that a Highland senior, Mike Cavanaugh, was a recipient of a very fine scholarship from the King's Daughters. This was based on leadership abilities, social service, character and scholastic quality. In the field of athletics, two awards are given. The Charles Hardman Award goes to the best all-round senior athlete and this year that senior was Bob Young. The Wade Ormsby, Jr. Award is based on outstanding quality shown in athletics, 114 dramatics, scholarship and social well-being. The award this year went to Jim Ranftl. Activities, too, rank high on the list of important details in school life. Because activities are varied, opportunities are numerous for the entire student body to join in and express themselves as individuals. Two seniors, a girl and boy, are selected as having done more to promote activities each year. These seniors are Mike Cavanaugh, selected for his outstanding work in leadership positions and Mindy Robertson for her work within a club and as a leader. There are three music awards given also. The John Phillip Sousa Awards went to Nancee Kolarek and Patty Wiese as outstanding bandsmen. While working on the others, a lot of friendships were made, some were strengthened, and others broken. Now that the book is done, we, the staff, can recall many things... . Tuesdays Ist period — . Thursdays Ist period — . Wednesday's migration to Grangerburg — . making a united tront — . begging the sun to come out — . . sorting torn book covers — . . nagging Mr. N. to have his pictures taken — . making that first deadline — . . making that second deadline — . that third — that fourth — . changing Dorothy to Dorthy — . . running out of final mats — . reading petitions — . trying to ti nd a ruler — . . trying to communicate — In some ways it's all over, yet in others it's just begin- ning.
