We hear the coach’s voice on the football field when the thrilling football season begins. We watch the muddy shoes digging up the dirt and we hear the loyal shouts and cheers of the crowd. We also see the pretty majorettes strutting down the field to the tune of the High School Band. Along with the happy experiences and the fun, another year of studying begins. A lot of us enjoy coming back to see the old gangs again and find out what happened that was interesting in the summer. All of these events come but once ina lifetime and that is during our ‘’school days.”’ .... Fae. ... : 4 ' LEWIN O. VERMILLION Superintendent of Highland Local Schools MRS. The reason for the success was that the team was well balanced and had spirit. The line was very strong in opening holes and just as strong on defense. The backfield was just as strong as the line in their running. All around it was a terrific team. 13 Pretty, perky Lynne Cady has a smile for everyone. Here we are fortunate enough to have captured some fast moving action shots of these colorful games. Another event of school life was the changing of teachers during the first and second semester. Miss Baesel, the newcomer to Highland, teaches the all important sub- ject, English. Besides this she teaches gym class, coaches the cheerleaders, and is a Freshman class and G. A. A. advisor. Caught by the camera in mid air! Welcome to Highland, Miss Larry warms up for an exciting game Baesel. In memory of Charles Hardman, the Athletic Department of Highland is giving the Charles Hardman Award to the most outstanding athlete. The decision is made by the coaches and is judged on the athletic performance during the four years of high school. He must be a Senior to receive this award. Mike Webster and Ron Louk received the award this year. Marilyn and Mike approach the throne with happy anticipation. Queen Marilyn has just received her lovely crown of flowers from former Queen Jan Duncan. The presentation of flowers and crown make Marilyn officially Queen of the May Dance. May Dance Lends A Gay Note to Spring With blossoms coming out we turn to one of our big events of Spring which is our May Dance. Marily Edwards reigned as queen of the 1955 May Dance. Janice Duncan, the 1954 queen presented flowers to the queen and crowned her with a crown of white carnations. Then she danced the queen’s dance with her escort Mike Webster. In her court were Gerry Snyder, Freshman attendant; Mary Ellen Louk, Sophomore attendant; Phyllis Rickert, Carol Swain, Lynne Cady, Junior at- tendants; and Phyllis Hard, Senior attendant. Our lovely Queen and her court pose for pictures after the ceremony. MARILYN EDWARDS Responsibilities gravitate to the person who can shoulder them. Class, Luphecy THE HATFIELDS AND THE McCOYS or THE HIGHLAND RIDGE RUNNERS Alas, what will happen to the brilliant and prosperous Seniors of Highland High School. Let me relate to you in this little episode what may happen in the near future. As we look over the beautiful green hills of Kentucky, our gaze drops down to a small country scene of village and landscape. Look! What is that coming down the road? Why it’s Ronnie Willard driving a herd of hogs and Lynne Cady carrying his jug of “Mountain Dew.” As we go along, we find Paul Sheehan up in a tree trying to catch Eddie Plute whom he thought was an opossum. Also as we walk along we find a still operated by Pete Berger, Twila Leatherman, and Tom Rick- brodt. Twila and Tom are the official tasters. We all stop and have a swig and who should drive up in his 1928 hard top convertible but Roger Bowman. He is hauling Pat Mostoller and Carol Swain in the back seat with his pet mule. Here comes Ramon Hazen across the sweet potato patch. With him are the best gun shooting gals in the county; 'Connie Nei- heiser and Doris Simon. Doris won a medal by shooting a flea off Mary Ann Sobczyk’s hound dog. Jim.Cady is with them. He also won a medal, but he won his by shooting Sandra Valentine whom he mistook for his wife. | wonder why they are all gathering here? Must be some reason, but look! What is that? It looks like Marilyn Edwards and her cone-pone eating band composed of Margie Friedline, Lavonne Schiele, and their jug car- rier, Allan Warner. My mammy’s corn cob pipe, but there must be something going to happen! What, what’s that? A wedding? where? At the general store in Shoeless Gulch. What are we waiting for. Let’s go! As we go along the narrow road, what should we pass, but tne Hog Wallow Olympics. Here we find Bernie Arnold, Mike Webster, and Larry Bergstrom engaged in the most strenous feat of the whole contest. Grinning down a bear. Ronnie Louk won the male beauty contest for having the best looking and cleanest feet in the county. We see a group of lovely Strawberry Patch girls, Joan Capes, Rita Yost, and Mary Guiliano, getting ready for their feat —A man hunt. Running with them, is Charlotte Godfrey who always gets her man. Curtis Singer is the judge. This is the only way he can escape from being caught in the man hunt. We didn’t have time to stay longer, so we went on and who should we pass, but the district Revenue officers, Jim Gorman and 51 Norman Krueger. They had under arrest Eve Herrmann because she had been milking a cow, and Dorothy Zapotoczky made the cow kick the bucket and Beverly Hartman was left holding the bag. A bad offense. We finally arrive at the store which is owned by Jim Kamps. He’s furnishing all the moonshine for the wedding. We all go in and who should we see but Margie Mulcahy and her six young’uns. A person meets the whole populace in a place like this. Here back from the city are Herb Long and David Baxter. Herb made his money by selling the Empire State Building. David lost his by buying it. Oh, look! Here comes Gary Peterson without his shoes on. That means Larry Swain will step on them when they start a hoe-down. Larry lost ten pounds at the last wedding when he came with Marilyn Streck. She lost five pounds trying to keep up with him. Barbara Olden is here too. She won a gold pig for being the best hog-caller in Shoe- less Gulch. | wish this wedding would start. Oh, Look! Here comes the best man, Bud Fogle with a dandelion stuck under his suspenders. But where is everyone else? Oh, what’s that? Pat Hodgman and Roberta Dale forgot theit shoes and Quella Couch and Phyllis Rickert got tied up in their supper. Spaghetti. Well, interruptions do happen. There’s the editor of the Greasy Gazzette, Darlene Beachler and her two assistants, Paul McCaudy and Ted McVay. Ted and Paul dis- tribute the paper every leap year with all the bachelors’ names in it to the single girls. Very convenient. At last. Here comes the Parson, Pat Glover who will join Dorothy Phillips and Bob Ruckel in a hog-ring ceremony. What, what did you say? Chuck Miller went to get the ring but the hog ran off. Bob Whitehead said that he would get a ring from his hog, but come to find out, Bob’s hog had run away with Chuck's. Well, what can you expect. The bride’s crying and the groom, where is that groom. Bless my soul, he’s run off. | guess he won’t be back because Lee Phillips, the constable, and Jerry Hartman, his deputy, went after him. Lee and Jerry have never gotten a man yet, but they keep trying. Confusion reigns in the general store as we leave. The Highlanders are happy and contented though, as they live in Shoeless Gulch, even if the girls don’t always get thei: man. Ww XI CARPENTER’S STUDIO “CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHERS” 965 Copley Rd.
