This trip was the realization of a dream that started four years ago when the class entered high school, and was an experience never to be forgotten. fy! To earn the privilege of wearing an honor cord and receiving the honor pin, the student must have at least 4.0 or B standing. The class had two valedictorians-- Margie Schuepbach and Mar- ilynBoedicker who both had a 5.0 average. Linda Lou Lyon, the salutatorian, had a 4.9 standing. The service,whichbegan at 7:30, was conducted by Rev. William Mathews who inspired the group with his sermon on Dreams of Our Youth. The Reverends Allrich, Marshall, and Soder- berg also participated in the program. Music was furnished by the organist, Mr. Roscoe Menz, and the Congregational Church Choir under the direction of Mrs. Jeanne Storts. 20 The Graduating Class of 1956 The Seniors' Big Night arrived June 1 when com- mencement exercises were held in the Highland High School Gymnasium. The eighty-five graduates marched in as the band played Triumphful March. Rev. F. C. Allrich gave the in- vocation then Alvin Deibert, president of the class, wel- comed the audience. Mr.J.J. White presented the class after which Mr. J. C. De- Laurenti introduced Rev. S.M. Pronko, the speaker of the evening. Mr. Pronko gave a very challenging address on It's a Great Time to be Young. The High School Band and the Senior Girls' Sextet provided music during the evening. On the 16th of May the intraschool track meetwas held, The boys had the usual track contests while the girls participated in volleyball, softball, basketball, and shot archery. Their first game was with Riverview Gardens, Mo., on Sept. 17, in the Highland arena. The final score was Riverview Gardens 18, Highland O. The following week they fought the Roxana Shells at Roxana, on Sept. 24. Roxana finished with 27, Highland 6. Don Ginther scored Highland's first touch- down of the season. On Sept. 27, the Jr. Varsity went to Roxana and finishedwith Roxana 27, High- land 6. After a week of practice the Varsity journeyed to Bethalto to lose a hard fought game 32-7. Dupo played here October 7 and shellacked the Bulldogs 54-0. On October 22, Pattonville defeated Highland, 21 to 8. The Jr. Varsity challenged the Cahokia Jr. Varsity on Oct. 24 to win the first game of the season with a score of 18 to 14. Two days later Madison defeated Highland, amidst the rain and cold with the final score 49-O. Our last game of the season was played against Cahokia. Although the Bull- dogs lost 47 to 18, the team, with Don Ginther carrying the ball, scored three guna! The HHS Marching Band added much to the home football games this year. Under the direction of E. Paul Lyon, band director and led by Linda Lyon, head majorette, the band performed many clever routines at the half time. Highland opened its 1955-56 season, on Tuesday, November 22, by playing Carlyle. 9 , C . K V Highland High, who lost to Johnston City 61-65, also lost to Dupo 85-72, in the East St. Louis Invitational Tournament on December 26- 29. ,The Bulldogs' highest scoring games were Madison, 100, Alton, 1003 and Cahokia, 101. The Bulldogs won first place in the four-team Blind Tournament held in Highland on January 14 by beating Bethalto 23-30. ' For four years- in succession Highland has stayed at the top of the -Midwestern Conference. This season, Highland tied with Madison for first place, winning seven and losing one. 9 A ' One of the most exciting games of the seasonwas the Highland-Ed- wardsville game, when the Bulldogs defeated the Tigers 87-80. The Bulldogs also proved their scoring power when they rompedthe Green- ville,Flyers on Tuesday, January 17. Students were all allowed to dance on the stage and gym floor. The Student Council again had charge of the Homecoming and by pop- ular vote of the student body, revised the big event into a two night affair. All athletics were repre- sented by fifteen boys elected by the school's athletes. The maids were elected by the entire high school. A very fine savings program was set up by the Council whereby all stu- dents can accumulate. throughout high school, money for the Senior Trip and for college. Many changes in the Homecoming were put into effect this past year. The maids were elected from each class with fifteen of the school's athletes serving as their escorts. The Homecoming was held on two nights with the game being played on f4t4ZeteofzZe em cmgyme Friday night and the crowning ceremony and dance taking place Saturday night. H.H.S. won their game over Roxana 50- 45. Jim Byrne, Athlete of the Year , crowned the new queen, Judy Tibbetts. The gymnasium was very beautifully decorated by the Student Council. Formal Initiation of new members Q, 14. ff, The Girls' Athletic Association is a very well known organization around H.H.S. G.A.A. started off their year with their annual hayride. When Christmas came G.A.A. went to the Highland Home where all had a most enjoyable time with the residents there. At the Blind Tourn- ament this year, the G.A.A. girls sold soda and shakers. The G.A.A. Play Day being held here was enjoyed by girls from Bethalto, Madison, Cahokia, and Highland. One of the most popular sports of the organization is bowling. Due to the fact that the Broadway Bowling Alley burned, the G.A.A. bowled at the V.F.W. of Highland.
