It has been our primary purpose in this Thirty-fifth An- niversary edition to continue with the precedent set by the class of 1920. We hope this book will always be a source of happy memories for this year ' s student body and that it will renew interest among our alumni. DEDlCATlOBf OLEM STRATTON With grateful and sincere hearts, we the Class of 1955 dedicate this our 1955 Anniversary Iris to Mr. Stratton. His sense of humor and willingness to be of assistance on all class projects have helped to make our high school days a big success. It has been through his endeavors and help to us that we can now look back upon our accomplishments and say, thank you for helping to make our H.H.S. days happy, enjoyable, and worthwhile. With this appreciation in our hearts we have dedi- cated this our Iris to a wonderful friend and sponsor. H.H.S. PRINCIPAL Congratulations are in order to the members of the Iris Staff and their advisor, Mr. Diefenbach for the production of this book. They have n ' only pro- duced a book which represents the ooo lete school year of 1954-55, but have been able to compile a brief history of those people who ' ' have graduated from Highland High School during tha Sst 35 years. To do this has taken many hqurs of work, yet it is hoped their efforts will be apMeciated. This staff and their a lsor have not been afraid tooverridg ' some traditions of the past and experiment with the idea of a niid-summer publishing date. It is hoped that our dents and graduates will not be afraid to override tradition of any kind when it has become outdated nd new ideas need to be put into action. JOSEPH J. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY In the fall of 1951 one hundred and two awestruck Freshmen entered Highland High School. From that day until commencement night we ' ve grown toward a goal and enjoyed our days together. The class colors were chosen as blue and silver with the flower being a yellow rose. Those elected to be our officers during 1951-52 were Lowell Antenen, President; Muriecelberg, Vice-President; Janet Messerli, Secretary; Larry Mettler, Treasurer; and Marilyn Frankland and David Koch, Student Council members. It was during the Sophomore year that the class began plans for a Senior trip. In the fall we began individual work projects as raking leaves, baby sitting, house work, etc. For the class fund basketball group and individual pictures were sold, as well as programs. By the end of the year we had quite a sum of money collected and could already see our trip becoming a reality. The slate of officers that lead us during that year of 1952-53 were Mary Herbst, president; Lois Schwehr, Vice-President; Diana Rogier, Secretary; Roland Malan, Treasurer; and Larry Mettler, Student Council member. Between our Sophomore and Junior years the Junior Variety Show was planned. After a lot of work and rehearsals we gave one of the most satisfactory and successful shows at H.H.S. Again during this year we undertook many work projects as selling neckties, candy, and hot dogs, entertaining at the Homecoming, holding bake sales, and decorating for the Regional Tournament held at Highland. No one can deny that we were an enthusiastic, industrious class. It was during this same year we picked our class rings; ours being the first with a standard crest. Towards the end of the year we gavo a beautiful Junior -Senior Prom en- titled, Enchanted Woodland. David Koch and Carol Winet ushered the graduating class in their baccal- aureate and commencement exercises. The officers for the year of 1953-54 were Bill Tuffli, President; Carol Winet, Vice-President; Lizann Habbegger, Secretary; Bob Nagel, Treasurer; and Sue Loyet, Student Council member. Those first three years passed so fast that before we realized it, we were the graduating class of H. H.S. The officers for our Senior year are shown above. In the fall we gave a box social for the school and sold food at four basketball games and soda at football games. On April 15, 1955 we gave one of the most successful performances at H.S.S.--a Variety Show representing different magazines. The class is very proud of BiU Tuffli ' s accomplishments in sports and of two of its members, Carol Winet, 1954 Home- coming Oueen, and Lizann Habbegger, 1955 Special Maid of Honor. From May 23-28 the class took that wonderful trip to Washington, D.C. On May 22 was our Baccalaureate Service at the E R Church of Highland and the Graduation exercises were held on June 1st at the Highland High School Gymnasium. The goal we had been striving for was attained. We owe a great thanks to Mr. Stratton, Miss Harris, Miss Sparkman, Mrs. Courtway, and Mr. Grismer, who served as class sponsors during our four years at H. H.S. As we leave H.H.S. we will not forget the four beautiful, successful years that have passed. Our class motto, Today we foUow, tomorrow we lead, will linger in our minds as we strive to achieve tb ' goal in life. 12 ROBERT NAGEL Ambition - To be a retail phar- macist. FOOTBALL Highland had its first full season of football since 1943 under the direction of Coach Bob Costilow. While the Bulldogs had no victory to show for the season the sport made a great stride with 46 boys out for the team. Many of them under -classmen, who benefited by the year ' s experience. The open- ing game was with the hard-driving, hard- charging Roxana football boys who defeated the Highland High gridders 54-0, on Sept- ember 24. Senn, Ward, and Ron Gemoules charged through the Roxana line but the team ' s need for experience gave good reason for the score. Highland finished with three first downs and 72 net yards, with Ward accounting for 63. On October 2, the Bulldogs showed considerable improvement but lost to Bethalto 18-6. Taking to the air as their main of f ensi v e threat, the local squad banked on the right arm of their T quarterback Ward, who scored the Bulldogs ' touchdown. A defensive play by Senn was one of the highlights of the game. Playing center on the offense, he served as Ward ' s interference. Highland ' s Junior Varsity played the Cahokia Freshmen on October 13 with the game ending in a 7-7 tife. Ron Gemoules scooped up a fumble and ran 60 yards to score the touch - dovm. The extra point was scored on a pass from Koch to Walther. 42 Mir ' ' ' ' ■t r i BACK ROW: Bill Tuffli, Half Back, Lamar Senn, Full Back; Don Ginther, Quarter Back; Jay Waid, Half Back. The Bulldogs lost to the Wood River Varsity 13-0 on October 25, al- though they had outplayed the Oilers statistically. The Bulldogs showed their best passing offense of the season with Ward finding Byrne and Tuffli for good gains. On the cold night of October 28, the Highland Junior Varsity was shell- acked by the Edwardsville Frosh-Soph team 49-0. The team completed its first re- gular season losing to Cahokia 31-12 on November 6. Ward scored both High- land touchdowns, both coming on quar- terback keep plays, one going four yards, the other, one. Senn again showed defensive strength throughout the game. Other defensive stalwarts for the season were Spindler, the Gemoules boys, Zobrist, Buettikofer, Hug, Gerl, Walther, and Gassmann. CO-CAPTAINS Lamar Senn Jim Knop MARCHING BAND The Highland High School Marching Band un- der the direction of E. Paul Lyon added a lot of color and interest to the football games this year. Dressed in uniform and doing letter formations, a figure eight formation, a square dance formation, and just straight marching drew big applause from the crowd. In addition to performing at the football games the marching band took part in several parades including the Girl Scout Parade and the Greenville College Homecoming. Follow- ing the Greenville College Pa- rade the band joined in play- ing a concert with the Green- ville College and high school bands. Students who graduate and go on to take part in college marching bands will profit greatly from this experience. The marching band has added a lot to the spirit of our school. Playing during time-out at a game. BASEBALL . ' ° ' The opening game of the Highland baseball team was played against Carlyle. The Bulldogs defeated them 8-3 due to the great pitching of Jim Knop. The Bull- dogs had only cxie hit and seemed to do everything wrong, but they bounced right back to defeat Pocahontas 18-8. The Bull- dogs traveled toRoxana for the first Midwestern Conference game and were defeated 6-4. In the second conference game Highland beat Bethalto6-0. JimKnop pitched a one- hitter. Also in the second round Highland beat Breeze Com- munity High. 12-2. In the final game of the Sub-District Highland slid by Greenville, 3-1. The battling Bulldogs then entered the District Tournament at Vandalia and won first there by de- feating St. Anthony of Effingham. 5-3. Following the 1954 Queen were seven maids: Karen Warnecke escorted by Don Ginther, Sandra Apple- gate escorted by Gary Thiems, Gloria Rogier escorted by Jay Ward, Kay Jean Byrne escorted by Jim Knop, Judy Tibbetts escorted by Norm Tuffh, Lynn Geppert escorted by Jim Williams, and Ruth Stork escorted by Leonard Zobrist. As they preceeded up the gym floor, they curtsied to the crowd and Queen Carol and then took their places on either side of the stairs leading to the throne. Special maids Sharon Jenne escorted by Dave Loyet and Lizann Habbegger escorted by Captain Bill Tuffli then appeared. Both special maids curtsied and then ascended to the stage. Concluding the royal procession Margie Schuepbach wearing the royal robe was escorted to the throne by James Byrne. Kathy Werne and Randy Williams drew their share of applause serving as train bearers. Margie took her place on the trone and the Retiring Queen gave her farewell address. Early in the fall, the F.F.A. boys threw a hayride for the girls and their dates at the Suess farm. After the long ride (which seemed so short), the boys served hot dogs and cold cider. In February the girls gave the boys a party in the high school gym. Miss Joan Lorenz, the girls P.E. instructor, directed the games. The group played several relays then did a square dance. After such strenuous exercise, the cold soda and hot dogs pre- pared by the girls were a welcome sight. Every year the F.F.A. boys give a banquet for their parents some time in February. This meeting provides the parents with an opportunity to see what the organization is doing. The banquet, as in past years, was cooked and served by the F.H.A. girls. WM ' ' v .jMA A L U M N I . . , For the past year, the research committee of the Iris Staff has spent many hours tracing graduates by phone, maU and personal interviews. We think that we have done a complete job although it will be noted that there are several people whom we could not trace. As our year- book goes to press, we have exhausted all of our leads. We sincerely hope that our efforts will acquaint you with your old classmates and revive pleasant memories of your life at Highland High School. Our Artist, on these pages, has given you an ink sketch of some of the buildings you may remember best, and following are our present buildings. These we feel are the outward signs of the growth of Highland High. Of course, our school is growing in many other ways as well. Our curriculum is expanding, we are participating in a greater variety of outside events each year and we expectto continue our growth into the future. . . . I85 4 90 1935 . . . .During this period of research, it has become very obvious to members of the Iris Staff that we in Highland High School have an excepticxiaUy fine educational heritage. Our graduates are successful leaders and representatives in many varied fields, and we are proud of their re- cord. Our hope is that we too, may do as well as they have done. Thanks to an interested Alumni, we have been able to make this edition of The Iris the largest in number of pages and largest in distribution in our 35 year history.
