in-'ll lll Hllll A man's true honor lies in his works. To signify our respect and admiration for a man whose wisdom and devotion to his work have helped shape the future of HHS. students since 1942, we dedicate this, our 1951 Iris, to Mr. DeLaurenti. He has been untiring in his efforts to build not only a finer curriculum and establish high standards of moral and scholastic achieve- ments, but also to create a tradition of culture of which we and all alumni are extremely proud. Through his unceasing efforts, he has done much to bring about the consolidation of neighboring schools into a new unit, He now holds the position of superintendent over the Highland Community School Unit, District 5. Still sits the schoolhouse by the road. A ragged beggar sleepingg Around it still the sumachs grow, And blackberry vines are creeping. Within the master's desk is seen, Deep scarred by raps official, The warping floor, the battered seats, The jack-knife's carved initial, The charcoal frescoes on its wall, lts door's worn sill, betraying The feet that, creeping slow to school, Went storming out to playing! Once, this was typical of our public schools. Those feet that wore the door's sill have fashioned new schools for a modern world. Progress marches ahead and we follow in its footsteps. Rather than by a frescoed wall, we are greeted by a sleek, modern building de- sign: the call Extral Extra! Read all about it! We pause to read the bulletin board to see how this day is to progressg each day brings with it some- thing new. A typical day might begin like this . . .
