In retrospect . . . I have been asked to lrve ln the past for a brlef tlme and give some observations upon my teachmg career ln the local hlgh school As far as the busmess courses which we offer at present are concerned, there have been a few changes Nlerchandxsmg and yumor busmess have been added to the vocatlonal subjects of shorthand, typew rmng and bookkeepmg, Our physical equrpment has greatly lmproved VVhen we were housed on the publlc square, the street nonses rose above the clatter of the ty pew rlters, and a teachrs volce had to be loud IH order to meet the competition of the many distractions of the outside world Une of the greatest changes that has come about IS ln the lm proyement of textbooks Through the years the publishers have vled with each other to produce practxcal and attractxve tools wlth which students may work lhe quallflcatlons of teachers have rxsen untll now vou must have '1 degree before you can secure a teachers certrflcate rl hrough the vears, I have taught so many excellent students I hope they have found the courses worth whlle and have made for themselves good places nn the business world I have so many pleasant memories of the personalmes that my students have possessed NIABFL IVENGER I have been asked by the Irls Staff to glve my Impression of our elementary school as l have known It through the years rlo go back to the small school m the public square, retrospectlon brmgs to mlnd the bell ID the cupola callmg us each day to work rleachlng at that tlme could not be called a professlon of speclahza tlon We taught our classes the fundamental subyects and art and read wlth them storles ln German The classes were large 'Ievct books were umnsplrlng The many ands to teachmg whlch we accept matter of factlv today maps globes charts, pxctures, audlo visual equlpment were practlcally nonexistent Llbrarv facllmes were meager Thus was the school of yesterday I am glad to have experienced those days They were a real challenge to our resourcefulness and ingenuity lf we lacked a needed map, we made lt It was not beautifully done hy present day stand irds but If seryed 1ts purpose of lllustratlon Ideas and techniques As we outgrew the old school, we were put lnto our present fme bulldmg with nts spacxous grounds and nts modern equlpment Yes, the physlcal aspects of the school have changed and that ns is lt should be But through the years the human slde has not changed That, too, rs as xt should be As I have known them, teachers of the past were, rn the mam, endowed wxth patrence, human un derstandmg, and common sense lhey smcerely desrred to be of service to the boys and gurls who were to be the future cltlzens of our country No teachers of today are not dlfferent Parents remam unchanged I am glad to have known so many I have found out ln the past the prmclples for whlch they stood Ihey made for Highland a solnd cltmenry, mdustrlous, progressrve, wlth llttle lrkmg for pretense, but yudgmg newcomers and each other on their values They took care of their cluldren, sendxng them to us clean and neat I hope that each evening we sent them home a lnttle taller, a llttle stronger, and a llttle nearer the goals that the school had set up for them No parenthood today rs not different LlIlldfCH remam unchanged Youth of earller days had a more restricted vlewponnt of llfe lhe automobile, the motxon pncturc the radio dld not evcxst to broaden their world hormons But they hid thc-lr xspnratrons and dreams lherr laughter was clear and spontmeous lhey faced the future wlth courige and an abiding, fanth lhrough the years I have seen the tests that soclety made of the behavlor of our y0ung.Z people as they met the socral, economic and moral sltuatlons of lnfe As the children of yesterday' met this evaluatxon successfully I am confrdent that when the chlldren of today are up for their appralsal, they tom wlll not be found w antmg LILLIAN VVENGER V1 . . -I ' L -L I . . ., . , .
