BUCK THREE One hundred years ago the boy knew practically all trades. He would watch the blacksmith, the weaver, the tradesman, and the baker in order to understand all the tricks of the trade. It was easy for him to choose wisely. Today our industrial system has become very complicated. Today men do not do thlngsg they do one thing or perhaps only part of one thing. Consequently, lt has become both difficult and bewildering to choose and feel that one is choosing wisely. By entering into some of the extra curricular activities of our school, some become familiar with certain pursuits which motivate their lite work. Perhaps some will leave our glee clubs, go on with the training they received, and become great artists. Perhaps some will leave our band for a posi- tion in a symphony orchestra: others from the F. F. A. may become famous sclentlflc farmers. Our plays may decide someone for a theatrical career: and the home economics courses have trained girls to become good mothers and home- makers. Athletics will always play a significant role in the proper use of leisure time. Wholesome values may be derived from participating in athletics actively or as a spectator. There is an ever widening opportunity for men and women to earn a livelihood from their athletic ahllltles.

Olive High School on September 30. Our team did not show much offensive power but was good on defense. ,The result was a 2-0 victory in favor of Mt. Olive. Coach Davis then put the team through two weeks of hard and intensive training pre- paring for the October 13 game with Dupo. The fine offensive attack displayed by the greatly improved and much stronger team gave Highland its iirst victory of the season. The score was Dupo G, Highland IS. On Saturday, October 20, the team encountered a stronger foe and was defeated by Marquette, 33 to 0. On the next Saturday afternoon, October 27, the team played a somewhat inspired game for a half, against Cathedral High School of Belleville, but weakened in the second half. The final score was Belleville 24, Highland 3. On Friday, November 2, the team made a long trip to VVhite Hall and won, 6-0, On November 10, the Highland High boys played their last game of the season.. Several of our players were seniors and were making their last appearance for Hlghland High. We lost to il strong Carlyle team, 34-0, Mr. Davis has coached our football squad for W the past three years. Every student in Highland X High School greatly admires his splendid work in building up the athletics of the school and the wonderful enthusiasm he has instilled into the players. Besides setting up goals and ideals to work for in football, Mr. Davis is to be commended for his staunch stand on fair play and true sports- manship in all school activities at all times.
