DEDICATIO We, the Class of 1935, dedicate this fifteenth volume of the Iris to the teachers and those people of the United States who have made possible the three hundred years of secondary education in this coun- try. In addition, we wish to dedicate this volume of the Iris to the teachers of the Highland Public School who have helped make possible our education and the edu- cation of preceding generations. PPRECIATIG The senior class wishes to give special recognition to the entire faculty, the Board of Education, and especially those members of the faculty who have, during the past four years, guided us through the realms of knowledge. We also wish to thank those teachers who have spent so much of their time and effort in serving as our class sponsors. CONTENTSA BOOK I ADMINISTRATION BOOK II CLASSES BOOK III ACTIVITIES BOOK IV ADVERTISEMENTS BCOK ON This year the seniors of Highland High School, as'all seniors, have been confronted with one of the most serious decisions of life. They have faced the task of choosing a career, vocation, or occupation which is to become their life it v work. With the realization that they would soon graduate came the sudden realization that they were growing up: that their parents would not feed and clothe them forever: and that they must decide how they are most fltted to support themselves and to become useful. Some may choose to become teachers and carry on the noble work of preparing youth for life, others may choose to become judges or lawyers. Still others may wish to become ministers-bringing the word of God to the people, or doc- tors-safeguarding the health of the people. Those who choose these professions will naturally have to continue going to school to advance their education. I ADMINISTRATION L - P I If 5 ix MW 62593653 BOARD 1 Mr. C. F. The mine high standards are required of the teachers of the grade school as of the high school instructors. The two faculties are combined into one large administrative unit, each member doing his part to further education to a higher degree. Two-thirds of a child's school life in Highland is spent under the supervision of this competent faculty which aims to provide a firm foundation upon which to build a con- structive tour years ot secondary education. They see the industrious and the efficient doing things and reaping their reward, and choose to do likewise. Probably many of the girls will marry and raise another generation to carry on the world. There are those who wish to become bankers and keep our huge financial system run- ning. There are others who will take their places in the iactories, lumber mills, coal mines, and shipping yards, The glamour of the army and the navy will entice others. Still others will enter the tleld of politics and perhaps one! will become a great national leader. Harry Zeller LaVerne lsert Geraldine Baer Paul Earnhart Advisors Mr. Ewing Mr. White Miss Drew Colors Flower Blue and White American Beauty Rose Motto We'l1 be comrades to the end. In 1931, forty eight freshies entered Highland High School. We chose as our officers: Lynette Meloy, President, Harry Zeller, Vice Presidentg Evelyn Jenny, Secretary, and Lu Verne Alldridge, Treasurer. Miss Wenger acted as our sponsor. Our only activity was a wiener roast held at our sponsor's home. As typical freshmen we had a good time and did not seriously regard our lessons. When thirty seven of us returned as Sophoinores, we began to contemplate our education more seriously. Our officers were Lu Verne Alldridge, President: Harry Zeller, Vice President, Russel Stocker, Secretary and Treasurer. Our freshman sponsor, Miss Wenger, and Mr. Herrmeyer acted as our sponsors. There were no outstanding activities during this year. PAGE TWENTY TWO l Thirty six members returned for the junior year, which was a very busy one for our class. Our officers were Harry Zeller, President, Pauline Schmidt, Vice- Presidentg and Verne Wehrle, Secretary and Treasurer. Miss Drew acted as our sponsor. Our first activity as a class was a hike to the waterworks, which was enjoyed by all. The first all-high-school activity that our class sponsored was a box social in November. This was quite a novelty, and was highly successful. We sponsored a band concert that was also a success, Our class play, Here Comes Patricia, was directed by our sponsor Miss Drew. It was presented at the Opera House on December 15, and was well attended. In February, a second party was sponsored by our class in the form of a kid party. It proved enjoyable to the entire student body. A permanent addition to our high school was made in the form of the new Lost and Found Department begun by our class. The last event, and probably the most important, was the Junior-Senior Banquet, at which we entertained tlhe class of '34. It was held at the Temple and was a very impressive affair. The theme in decorating was a Chinese atmosphere. The color scheme we followed was the senior class colors, purple and gold. Speeches were given that followed the Chinese theme, and everyone seemed to adapt themselves to the spirit which the occasion demanded, The tables were lighted with candles, and the food was served by members of the sophomore class, who were garbed for the occasion in Chinese costumes. Firty six members composed our class in the senior year. Our first activity was a get-together party, which was supposed to be a Wiener roast, but ended up in the home ec. rooms due to rain. Another successful box social was sponsored by our class in November. On January 25, senior class play, Anybody's Game was given at the Opera House. It was quite a success, and was attended by a full house. The last few months were spent in working on the Iris and getting ready for our commencement. We are looking forward to our graduation with eager, yet sorrowful hearts, for we realize that our schooldays 'neath the Red and the Black will soon come to an end. We hope that our ideals will be higher and that we will be better fitted for the lives which lie before us, so that when we take our place as citizens we will be regarded by others as a credit to Highland High School.-G, B. As we near the end of this period of securing knowledge, we just begin to realize the importance of these school affairs, and how much they have ineunt to us. The Highland High School, within whose brick walls we have spent thees happy hours has amply served its purpose during the forty years of its existence, Next yeur this building is to be replaced by a modern combined grade and high school. PAGE TNVENTY SEVEN BUCK THREE One hundred years ago the boy knew practically all trades. He would watch the blacksmith, the weaver, the tradesman, and the baker in order to understand all the tricks of the trade. It was easy for him to choose wisely. Today our industrial system has become very complicated. Today men do not do thlngsg they do one thing or perhaps only part of one thing. Consequently, lt has become both difficult and bewildering to choose and feel that one is choosing wisely. By entering into some of the extra curricular activities of our school, some become familiar with certain pursuits which motivate their lite work. Perhaps some will leave our glee clubs, go on with the training they received, and become great artists. Perhaps some will leave our band for a posi- tion in a symphony orchestra: others from the F. F. A. may become famous sclentlflc farmers. Our plays may decide someone for a theatrical career: and the home economics courses have trained girls to become good mothers and home- makers. Athletics will always play a significant role in the proper use of leisure time. Wholesome values may be derived from participating in athletics actively or as a spectator. There is an ever widening opportunity for men and women to earn a livelihood from their athletic ahllltles. ACTIVITIES I PM I W I P K ,f.-as.: X Wk f 5- Q x ' - ,S I HS' I, .-. ' - A :mf S! Horace Loyet, a senior. captained the basket bah team this year. Horace is a good, dependable player on both offense and defense. Whenever the score was tied or close, it was usually Horace who came through and dipped the ball through the basket for a win or a tie, or a starting rally. Paul Earnhart carried off top honors for individual points Scored and for fouls com- mitterl. He had a. grand total of 159 points and 52 fouls. The past season has not been an excellent one, but the boys tried their best to make it so. In the National Trail Conference, Highland won one-third of its games. In the three tournaments in which Highland participated, they won their first game each time, but lost to stronger teams in the -second round of play. Highland went to two invitational tourna- ments, one at Mascoutah, and one at Troy, and to the District Tournament at Wood River. ln the annual city game between Highland High School and St. Paul, Highland still kept its record clean by defeating them 31-17. Many of us do not stop to realize how much we are indebted to Mr. White, who tills the re- sponsible position of high school principal. Mr. White also teaches science, and coaches the basketball and track teams, His influence in the class room and on the athletic iields is re- sponsible for our high standard of sportsmanship. In November Miss Drew, with two of the girls, Linette Meloy and Delores Klaus attended the State Conference of Home Economics clubs held at Springfield. They brought black many beneficial and interesting ideas. Our chief accomplishment was helping the P. T. A. mothers serve the hot lunch during the winter months. Later in the year, under the guidance and supervision of Miss Drew, the girls took full responsibility of the lunch room. VVe are looking forward to the club developing into a bigger and better organ- ization next year. PAC E THIRTY FIVE BA The Highland High School Band, of which we are justly proud, entered its fourth year with high hopes, It was organized under the leadership of George Raffaelle in 1931. In the district band contest at Hillsboro, in 1932, our band took first place in class D. This class was composed of schools having had a band less than one year. In 1933 the band competed in the district contest at Collinsville in class C. Highland finished in second division. The next year, the band went to the district contest at Belleville and tied with Rood- house for first place. This victory entitled them to ,go on to the state contest at Cham- paign, where they were placed in the second division. This year the band has given three concerts in Highland, they played at the basket- ball tournament at Woodriver, and at the Edwardsville Band Carnival. They added to the pep and enthusiasm of the students by playing for the basket-ball and football games. The Band took part in the Music Festival at Washington University, and they played in High- land for the Hospital Day. l Drum Major: Horace Loyet. 1-'lrst Rank from left to right: 11. Hartlieb, L. Highland I PAGE FIFTY FIVE BOOK FO Many men think they have chosen their permanent occu- pation, only to learn in middle life that it has meantldis- appointment and failure. Just because some older person says there is nothing like being a barber or selling land, there is no reason to rush into such an occupation. The situation slfts down to this: energizing work ls decreasingg enervatlng work is increasing. Yet lt is fundamental that mankind must do stimulating work or retrogressf' says Herman Schneider. We must choose something productive and useful. X Some of us will enter the business world to become secretaries or business executives, Others will probably be- come salesmen or work in some department of a huge busi- ness concern. Perhaps some will produce an invention which will add to the comfort of life, to better production, and the advancement of our clvillzatlon. Our sincere wish ls that the Class of '35 will all choose their llfe's work wisely, and that they will live happy and successful lives. N ADVERTISEMENTS V ,, N Ml Ibffo' Sami J, ' CEQQQBEQGH 9 1 X?
