'll Mr. George Dunn Rutgers University B.A. Nlr Arnold W. Webster Cheyney State College B.S. Glassboro State College M.A. SPECIAL EDUCATION The Special Education program, often called Occupational Education, is designed to develop the self-respect and the self-confidence of the individual student. At the same time, the program prepares him for that place he even- tually will occupy in our society. The students in this program are expected to succeed with a minimum of supervision in all areas of life. At maturity they will be capable of occupation- al and social independence in a modern competitive society. Academic courses are designed to provide the student with information and experience which will assist him in meeting his everyday needs, aid him in finding his proper place in our economic world, and develop responsible citizenshiptraits. The program is planned as a two phase unit. The first is completed in school where the student receives training in academic and vocational areas. The second phase, work training, involves spending half a day in school and the rest of the day in employment situations. On the completion of the sec- ond half, the majority of the students will be able to obtain and successfully maintain full-timejobs. 23
