The guidance department of Highland is staffed by three interested counselors and boasts of spa- cious, modern facilities. All students at sometime during their high school careers have the oppor- tunity to-visit its offices on the first floor and to take advantage of the many services it renders to Highland students. Under the director, Mr. Daniel Williams, are counselors Mr. Larnie Shaw and Miss Gladys Acker- man. Each counselor advises students of one class level, and the freshman class is divided among them. With this arrangement, a counselor knows many students personally and can help with person- al problems. The guidance suite provides an office for each counselor and a large waiting room where guidance information is displayed as well as a group conference room. A guidance library has college cata- logues and vocational information available for student use. Many services to the administration, the faculty, and the student body are performed by High- land's guidance department. It issues a newsletter giving information about colleges and careers. lt also helps carry out recommendations of the School Board and assists teachers in interpreting standardized tests and results. Most services, however, benefit the students. Maintaining records, administering tests, and holding conferences are important activities of the department which aid a student in determining his course of study in school and eventually choosing a college or vocation.
