Q S Qqgi ' sg 9- 155.1 I l P 4 , Last year Highland experienced the sudden loss of a dear friend, Mr. Ron- dom, a man who will become a lasting memory in the hearts of students and teachers. He had been an inspiration to all who knew him during that first hectic year here: iMr. Rondom displayed interest in his students. Realizing that teaching is more than merely relaying information and attitudes, he truly communicated with each student. He was a living lesson in understanding anfcompassion. The faculty too felt his influence. He boosted morale and was always willing to listen to a problem and to help solve it. To them, he was more than a fellow teacher: he was a respected and beloved friend. The 1969 Heather serves as a fitting memorial to Mr. Steen Rondom. BOARD OF EDUCATION FIRST ROW: Mrs. M. Neville, Mr. W. Hyland, Mr. L. DeGeorge, Mr. J. Moffa, Mr. A. Muller, Mr. E. Hill: SECOND ROW: Mr. J. Shorter, Mr, J. Kooistra, Mr. A. Calabrese, Mr. D. Downer, Mr. S. Feldman. On behalf of my fellow Board Members: My wishes are extended to the graduating Class of 1969 for a long life of happiness and success. Remember, graduates, you must thank many persons for making this graduation a reality. We extend our thanks to the administration and all members of the staff, professional and non-professional. Their assistance and guidance, I am sure, in some way have helped you develop a brighter outlook on life. Above all, your parents have contributed most to this feat's becoming a reality. A special tribute should be extended to all of you for your enthusiasm and school spirit that have established a new record for this school district. It is this kind of lead- ership by students that builds good character and outstanding citizenship. In your reflections to come in future years, remember Highland with the good fellowship of your democratic fellow students. I am concerned with your future. I would hope that each graduate pursues a defi- nite course in life. Seek out your vocation. Assume the proper attitude and you will be sure to succeed. A great many events have occurred during your high school years that have changed the course of history. You have experienced some historical events that have hailed the hallmark of our times. The success of the Apollo Eight is one of those happenings. This should inspire you as graduates to forge ahead to make this the greatest nation in the world. I say stand up for what is right and just for all of mankind.Do not be influenced by the militant forces that are out to break down the sphere of law and order that has served our nation so well for generation upon generation. Do not let these moments of violence ta ke root in your lifetime. May the dreams and hopes of peace, fellowship and understanding for a better world become a reality for all. Good luck, graduates. And so would I remind you, before you begin the next, that it has often been said, Fools brag about what they have done, but wise men despair of accom- plishments never attained. As you look back and reflect, are you, like so many of us, dissatisfied with your past efforts and accomplishments? Fortunately for all of us, the opportunities ahead are endless if we will but recognize and accept the challenge. lt would be dishonest to say that it is easy, for at one time or another each one of us gets discouraged-the gifted as well as the unfortunate, the rich as well as the poor, and even the strong as well as the weak. With discouragement, effort becomes a bur- den. And yet, for a fact, everybody in this world has a burden. This in itself is relatively unimportant. What is important is HOW YOU CARRY IT. My challenge to you is to car- ry your burden well. lt is my hope that these words will encourage you in the days ahead. To each one of you, I extend my very best wishes for success, good health, and lasting happiness. . Sincerely, A. W. Nluller Superintendent 5 ,we T Mrs. Virginia Forneron Principal sk , iris. The guidance department of Highland is staffed by three interested counselors and boasts of spa- cious, modern facilities. All students at sometime during their high school careers have the oppor- tunity to-visit its offices on the first floor and to take advantage of the many services it renders to Highland students. Under the director, Mr. Daniel Williams, are counselors Mr. Larnie Shaw and Miss Gladys Acker- man. Each counselor advises students of one class level, and the freshman class is divided among them. With this arrangement, a counselor knows many students personally and can help with person- al problems. The guidance suite provides an office for each counselor and a large waiting room where guidance information is displayed as well as a group conference room. A guidance library has college cata- logues and vocational information available for student use. Many services to the administration, the faculty, and the student body are performed by High- land's guidance department. It issues a newsletter giving information about colleges and careers. lt also helps carry out recommendations of the School Board and assists teachers in interpreting standardized tests and results. Most services, however, benefit the students. Maintaining records, administering tests, and holding conferences are important activities of the department which aid a student in determining his course of study in school and eventually choosing a college or vocation. fl 5422 Miss Cora Assenheimer Temple University B.S., M.Ed. At the same time, the program prepares him for that place he even- tually will occupy in our society. The students in this program are expected to succeed with a minimum of supervision in all areas of life. At maturity they will be capable of occupation- al and social independence in a modern competitive society. Academic courses are designed to provide the student with information and experience which will assist him in meeting his everyday needs, aid him in finding his proper place in our economic world, and develop responsible citizenshiptraits. The program is planned as a two phase unit. The first is completed in school where the student receives training in academic and vocational areas. The second phase, work training, involves spending half a day in school and the rest of the day in employment situations. On the completion of the sec- ond half, the majority of the students will be able to obtain and successfully maintain full-timejobs. 23 INDUSTRIAL ARTS f 24 Mr. James R. National Honor Society members must also demon- strate qualities of leadership, character and service as well as scholarship. The Highland Interact Club is a junior division of its sponsoring organiza- tion, the Blackwood Rotary Club. Just as Rotary devotes itself to providing community services, so does Interact devote itself to providing school and community services, such as selling programs at football and basketball games and sending voices from home tapes to soldiers. Interact members are nominated by the faculty and then selected on the basis of scholarship, character, and participation in school affairs. Interact endeavors to develop and enhance the qualities of leadership and service that today's Interact member will need as tomorrow's citizen. FIRST ROW: D. Yutronich, J. Schanz, F. DiGenova, Mr. L. She, the officers, and the council members have worked hard to make 1968-69 a busy and successful year. The Student Council has sponsored many activities to promote school spirit and provide entertainment for students. The pep rallies for football, basketball and wrestling were organ- ized bythe council, which also provided buses to many of the away games. The Pep Club has made signs and pep tags to stimulate support of athletic events. The selection of the football queen and her court was also supervised by the Student Council. Maintaining the Lost and Found and decorat- ing school bulletin boards are a few of the serv- ices the Student Council has provided for stu- dents. lt has sponsored the sale of Highland decals and book covers and organized the re- ceptionists and hall monitors. Although many of its projects were con- cerned with school spirit and service, the Stu- dent Council feels that its most important duty is to represent the students. Standing commit- tees, such as the Assemblies Committee, Cur- riculum-Change Committee and Smoking- Lounge Committee, were appointed to deal with specific problems and proposals which stu- dents had presented. The Advisory Committee, acting as the go-between with the administra- tion, handles student problems. - XY. M , -'WJ - L - - ' FIRST ROW: Miss M. Leek, J. Gallagher, R. Marshall, S. Minnosse, C. T THIS PARIS l L P so gf if C CC A fp Highland's first annual musical, So This ls Paris, was presented February 28. The two-act play recounts the adventures of six American girls in Paris who, while looking for fun, found love. Complications, arising from their organi- zation ofa block party to raise funds for a lame girl, supply the comical incidents. Because of the expert direction of Mrs. D. Wagner and Miss B. Daneluzzi and the aid of Student Coordinator Craig Badiali and Produc- tion Coordinator Bill Billhardt, the play provid- ed an evening of amusement forthe audience. The dancers, under the direction of Miss M. Serepca, performed to the music of Mr. J. Di- Menna's band, and the choral groups were cap- ably coached by Mr. L. Kuchler. II X D i ,.,.- l This year the Highland Tartans, co-captained by Chuck Fletcher and Dave Watson, met with anoth- er challenging basketball season. Although some scores didn't place us on the victory side, the boys managed to put up a good fight in many games. The games were usually lost by only a few points. All this is a clear indication that Coach Lynch will produce, as he has done many times in the past, a championship team. With their determined effort and the new training techniques, it will not be long before the Tartans take the lead in the Qlympic Conference The only players that will be lost this year are Chuck Fletcher, Frank Robell, and Dave Watson. 123 ' FROSH BASKETBALL FIRST ROW: D. The Tartans downed nine consecutive opponents and won the Triton Holiday Wrestling Tournament. Led by senior tri- captains Jim Hall, Jim McKeever and Steve Morris, the Tartans made a good showing at the Olympic Conference Championship. With eight seniors on the starting team, the Highland Wrestlers have built a wrestling reputa- tion that schools in South Jersey have learned to respect. lt seems that the same comments are made by the opposing coaches, 'That is the tough- est, strongest, and most aggressive team I have ever seen', boasts Coach R. Ross. This year's Highland Wrestlers have truly earned a sports name for the school - one that has made the coaches, wrestlers, and student body proud to have the team represent their school.
