WA DLIN The Class of 1954 wishes to pay tribute toa man who was a true friend of Highland High School and the young people of this community. A former member of the Board of Education, he never lost contact with the school or the young people it served. He was deeply concerned about the individua1's responsibility for the maintainance of our free institutions. Each year, in his capac- ity as Assemblyman from Ulster County, Mr. Wadlin made possible for the Seniors a visit to the State Capitol to view governmental machinery at first hand and to receive personally a greeting from the governor. We are proud to pay this tribute to a friend who has left us. Q14-Q '4 775 As we have come together in our various activities of this school year, we have worked with. and become better acquainted with, many of the faculty and many of the Class of 1954. Friendships have been formed that may last through many years. Values have been learned that will guide our lives for decades to come. Over the years we shall find ourselves in situations both pleasant and unpleasant, How we shall react in these situations, will depend on the values learned in our school years, and whether our friends will remain friends, or merely acquaintances, will depend on our adherence to the standards which our friends have admired in us. No act or motive, however obscure it may seem, remains hidden for long, The unjust act, the ulterior motive, the unfair judgment, will be indelibly written into our record, and will return to haunt us long after it is done, Through the years ahead, let us remember the precepts here leamed, and let us act by them. NFor when the Great Scorer comes to write against thy name, He writes not that you won or lost, but how you played the game. ,Libs d,4-v.A.f Supervising Principal 4 5:1 hs 5 A . lax I QQ, g.. BQ,?F -gpg-X! 66444 Qfdetwzq September 6, 1950 On this day the good ship Fifty-four set sail on the morning tide from the sheltering port of childhood. She carries a goodly, though rather inexperienced, crew. They have chosen Mary Ann Sandy as Captain, with Carole Valli her First Mate, Marie Sparacio handles the secretarial work, while John Minard is the Ship's Purser, Representing our crew on Ship's Council are Ann Friedman, Yvonne Brault, Robert Hecht, and Peter Burdash, March 16, 1951 Today has been a day of fun and laughter, Our first great social event, the Freshman Party, has taken place aboard ship, September 5, 1951 Now we begin the second leg of our four year voyage. Mary Ann Sandy is again at the helm, with Peter Bur- dash the First Mate, Marie Sparacio is Yeoman and the Purser is Peter Briggs. Ann Friedman, Yvonne Brault, John Minard, and Robert Hecht are on the Ship's Council. November 17, 1951 The Sophomore Dance was held tonight on the ship's deck, Gaiety and festivities highlighted the evening. September 3, 1952 We reach the mid-point of our joumey today, After two years of sailing, we have become fairly experienced seamen, We find that one of the officers of our last year's joumey, Peter Briggs, has left our ship for another. We are now led by a new Captain, Robert Hecht, with Ann Friedman as First Mate. Margaret Mertes is Yeo- man, with Vincent Vitale as Purser, This year our representatives on the Council are Marilyn Mertes, Yvonne Brault, John Minard, and Peter Burdash, We are planning to go off our course a few miles next year to visit the city of Washington, D. C. For this purpose we expect to organize a club. March 20, 1953 Today a wave of suppressed excitement ripples through the crew, the rumor is about ship that our class rings have arrived, May 1, 1953 Tonight some of our crew gave a performance of a play entitled Was This Murder? This climaxed weeks of hard work under the able direction of Mr. Ruggeri. May 14, 1953 As a farewell to the crew of our sister ship Fifty-three, we held tonight the greatest social event of our four year journey, the Junior Prom. The merriment and dancing lasted well into the night, September 9, 1953 After three long years on the sea of learning, our journey is nearly at its end, Our Captain this year is Peter Burdash, with David Baker as First Mate. The Yeoman is again Margaret Mertes and Peggy Phillips is the Purser, Representing us on the Ship's Council are Robert Hecht and Marilyn Mertes, as Co-Presidents, and Ann Friedman and Fred Maynard, March 26, 1954 A play entitled Tons o' Fun was given as a final performance by the crew of the good ship Fifty-four. May 14, 1954 The ship's company was honored tonight by the staff of our sister ship Fifty-five, We were their guests at a grand and glorious Prom, held in the Grand Salon which was brilliantly decorated for the occasion. June 27, 1954 The last event of our four year journey was Graduation, The time has finally arrived when the able bodied seamen of our ship are to part and board separate ships upon which they will sail into the sea of the future, Class Historian 61444 F714 The crystal ball rs clearrng the haze rs gradually drssrpatrng I can see rt all now A one, a nrne a srx and a four It IS the year 1964 and the Senrors of ten years ago appear, srngly and rn groups before my eyes Mrs Yvonne Brault Mrnard wrth her husband the famous apple producer John Mrnard rs enroute to Europe to lecture on prrze wrnnrng apples James Canrno new general manager of the Emprre Markets has decrded to leave for Honolulu where he wrll organrze a new charn of stores Whrle on the rslands he wrll see James Relyea champron outboard Jockey who rs about to wrn the Warkrkr Steeplechase drrvrng a new Lestercraft boat Among the travellers aboard I see Senorrta Cheetah Gallo famous dancer of Latrrr Amerrcan numbers rn England where she wrll grve a Command Performance for the Queen But Clyde Roan so often commrssroned as her archrtect rs as far away from her as he can get rn Mexrco where he rs burldrng her latest palatral mansron Also rn Europe rs prrma ballerrna Elrzabeth Grangrasso who recently succeeded rn obtarnrng Edward Matthews as her manager Barbara Tsmarrs who has travelled all over the world has frnally made up her mrnd and wrll settle rn Hrghland Movre star Margaret Mertes rs appearrng wrth Vrncent Vrtale rn a new Smellovrsron prcture whrch wrll be drrected by R Bartholomew Courant better known rn Hollywood crrcles as Cootre dahlrng The movre wrll feature Kenneth Cummrngs as an rmmature but potentrally dangerous, hot rod drrver The Burferndt Burferndt Employment Agency rs hrrrng employees for the Crtmr Schmrdt Constructron Company a frrm engaged rn burld mg arrfrelds for transportatron tycoon D C Baker Brrdges by Burdash and Hecht Inc a company whrch has just completed a brllron dollar span across Lake Erre rs contemplatrng the constructron of a Trans Atlantrc Parkway A very pretty receprronrst Mary Bellacrcco of course rs takrng apporntments for that world famous brarn surgeon Dr Robert Meekrns For Mary Drspensa prrvate secretary to a certarn popular young srnger I hear weddrng bells The Dean of Women at Hrghland Umversrty Marte Sparacro has Just recerved her trousseau from the Parrsran couturrere Madame Marre La Everrdge and rs plannrng a honeymoon rn Florrda Famous welfare worker Ann Frredman rs corrsrderrng the donation of another ten thousand dollars to her favorrte charrty the Leahey schrerber Home for Delrnquent Senrors Mrs Peggy Phrllrps, who uses her marden name for professronal purposes rs sure to be runner up rn the Mrs Amerrca Contest whrle another champion, Howre Wrldrrck wrll break all records rn hrs frrst year wrth the Wrldrrck All Star Basketball Team James Mertes Assrstant 33rd Vrce Presrdent of IBM wrll be very unhappy to hear of Karl Murphy s resrgnatron as the 34th Vrce Presrdent the latter plans to become shop teacher at Hrghland H1 School where he wrll further the cause of educatron Fred May nard who recently cornered the market rn beef wrll be rnvestrgated for vrolatron of the Mertes Antr Trust Act by Unrted States Senator Marrlyn Mertes Annette Palmer rs purchasrng another farm her 13th whrle rn her spare trme she manages her pro basketball team the Palmer Farmerettes John Rechen, world acclarmed artrst rs parntrng a portraxt of hrs protegee Joan Needham I see a flash rn the crystal ball Navy nurse Carole Vallr has just rescued that handsome young sarlor lsham Harrrs from the clutches of another Navy nurse In the screntrfrc world I see famed chemrst Mary Ann Sandy the drscoverer of a new wonder drug to cure the after effects of wonder drugs and Frank Slater her colleague rnventor of an amazrng new product for whrch there rs absolutely no use The renowned hunter and screntrfrc explorer Herbert Miller rs returnrng from the wrlds of Clrntondale where he and hrs trusted assrstant, Mary Jeanette have been studyrng rare forms of human lrfe Strrvrng for even greater drstances Henry Semmelhack IS bla trng off for the moon rn an atomrc rocket of hrs own desrgn Not even the crystal ball can foresee hrs future And now the lrght grows drm the vrsron fades I put the crystal ball rn rts case and close my lrttle booth Kes?-.fgss . . : . . . . . . . . .
