Highland hosted two foreign students during the 1968-69 school year. iI.eonor Vodonovic, from Concepcion, Chile, was assigned to High- land through the American Field Service. Ki- yoko Kusano volunteered to be the first stu- dent to come to Albuquerque from Sasebo, japan, which is Albuquerque's. sister city. Leonor arrived August 9 for her year long stay with the E. J. Lewis family. Her Ameri- can family had five members, just as her own does. En route to New Mexico she had visited New York and Miami with other foreign ex- change students. Leonor and her American sister Wyn were both seniors at Highland. Leonor enjoyed choosing her own subjectsg for in Chile she was assigned to her classes, 'Of her five classes, she liked Biology II best. Leonor began her active year at Highland as an honorary member of the Homecoming court. She was also a participant in the Ameri- can Field Service and Student Council. Kiyoko arrived in Albuquerque on Septem- ber 5. Her American family was similar to her own family in that the occupations of her fa- thers were in the same general field. Her father is a judge in japan, and Mr. Charles E. Barnhart, with whose family she stayed, is a lawyer. Kiyoko and her sister Amy were juniors at Highland, where Kiyoko found not wearing uniforms a change from her high school in Japan. Kioyko who had studied' English in Japan, where it was required, added Spanish to her stock of -languages. She enjoyed most about school Drama and Art and the fact that there was not as much homework as in japan- ese schools. Kiyoko also was an honorary Homecoming court member. On November 4 she participated in an ROTC assembly, in which she thanked Admiral MacPherson for making it possible for her to come to America to attend school. Ad- miral MacPherson was the initiator of the sister city plan. Kiyoko also participated in other extra- curricular activities throughout the-year. . Biology II was I.eonor's favorite subject. Here she is finishing a lab during the fifth period science class taught by Mr.'Floyd.
