Jane Casanova Sherry Chatkoff Gall Dieiendori Cupid shot a quiver of his arrows over Highland on Friday, February 24, as the students voted Elena jen- sen, the track princess, Sports Sweetheart for 1967. Elena was announced the winner after the game with Albuquerque High on Saturday, February 25, which left the Hornets in victory with a score of 58-51. At a morning assembly Friday, Feb- ruary 24, the sweetheart candidates were introduced to the student body by the two masters of ceremonies, Bruce Puma and Ioe C. Morris. The girls were escorted through a huge red heart in the gym by two H- Club members, Art Hayman and VVilliam Douglas MeCurdy. As they were seated they were presented with a symbol of the sport they rep- resented. The H-Club at a regular meeting I screened the girls who had signed up and then voted on them. They then assigned each girl to represent a certain sport. In order for a girl to qualify for Sports Sweetheart she had to have a 'C' average and be a Senior attending Highland. Earlier in 1966 the decision was made by Student Council to elimi- nate the Sports Sweetheart from its scheduled activities. However, the H-Club voted to undertake this re- sponsibility to preserve its tradition. At the Sweetheart dance, held after the victorious game against the Al- buquerque Bulldogs, Elena was crowned by joe Morris. The music was provided by the Court Iesters, a Highland-Originated band. The decorations keeping with the red and white Valentine theme, mixed with the general air of Cupid's ar- rows. Vff is-'Sis W f Q it . Curry ah Curry Bill Loclal and Donna Zamora embrace as he begs her to come with him. Eileen Grevey uses her feminine charm to persuade Paul Olson, Bill Lodal and Brian Flora. H1100 in the Shade, a two act musical, was presented under the direction of Mr. Arthur Loy and Mr. Bill Rob- ertson at a matinee and three evening performances April 1 through April 15. The musical concerns a plain, small town girl, Lizzie, who is convinced she is beautiful by Starbuck, a suave rainmaker, who comes to her hometown during a drought. Starbuck's chief competitor, File, a practical down to earth sheritl, offers Lizzie a comfortable and secure life while Starbuck offers her a life of fantasy. Lizzie's father and brother, jim, are delighted with Starbuck's progress with her while her older brother, Noah, is wary of the threat Starbuck poses to their way of life. The romance between Jim and Hirtatious Snookie pro- vided many of the comical highlights. Tryouts were held in January and rehearsals began at the end of the month. Under the direction of the stage manager, Donna Fossum, the stage crews worked hard to add to the success of the performance.
