NlCCORMICK Class Motto Should Auld Acquaintance Be Forgot Colors Scotch Plaid Flower Heather Mascot Mary Ca horsej 966 ffslvould Auld Acquaintance Be Forgotv HE History of Highland Hall, Volume LXVHI, is a very important and in- teresting book to which a score of collaborators have just completed the last chapter. To put the period at the end of the particular pages that belong to the Class of 1935 is a task that we are reluctant to perform. Near their end are the days of happy daily intercourse with our classmates, with our teachers, and with the rest of the student body. As these last days approach we realize, as never before, what a debt we owe to the two principals we have known, to three members of the faculty who have acted as advisers, to all those who have guided and befriended and inspired us. XYe know now what is the value of the friendships we have made here, and we shall say or sing the time-honored words of our motto with deep and sincere feel- ing. Think of us sometimes as we shall certainly think of you. XVe take away great memories, we hope we leave good ones behind. May those who follow us find the same spirit of comradeship in their own classes, the same desire to uphold the traditions of our Alma Mater to whom we say Good- bye today. 8 - Tl-IE CANDLE Class History N the fall of 1931 four young girls proudly entered the Freshman class of High- land Hall. Because the Sophomore class was also small that year we joined forces as the Underclassmen , and spent a very happy year. As Sophomores our numbers increased to fifteen. Wihat fun we had now that we could be masters ordering our slaves about, with remembrance of our own initiation. lYe had the privilege of setting the tables for our sister class, the Seniors, and of showing the school our dramatic talent in two playlets: At the Movies and An Interrupted Proposal . Still more important when our junior year arrived, we let others know in our special song that XYe were a peppy bunch and always so alive . lt would be impossible to tell you all the fun the seventeen of us had, but deplorable to omit a mention of the highlights of that good year. XVe followed the tradition of giving a tea dance at mid-year. XVe produced Sauce for the Goslings' and The Lost Silk Hat and gave a farewell party to the Seniors. Two days very close together saw us introduced to junior Hill, following this expedition by a very successful Junior Day. And then came Graduation XYeek and our proud acceptance of the right to sit on Senior Bench. NYe were also very proud to find that one of our class re- cei-ved the Katharine Gist Berryman Cup. Now we are Seniors. lt is with a sinking feeling that we realize our days at Highland Hall are drawing to a close but at the same time we are looking to the days beyond. Under Student Government as it has been developed this year, we feel our responsibility as Seniors more seriously than ever before. We are cer- tainly enjoying our privileges too and having great times at Senior tables. Soon we shall initiate our Juniors into the mysteries of the Hill, and give up our bench as we join the great company of Alumnae. As we leave the school we shall carry with us happy memories of past days, and we hope that the thought of its spirit will always mean much to us as we go out into a world of new experiences and untried ways. ll'lARY JANE LEE. 9 THE CANDLE lil.lZABlZ'l'll lXqliRCllANT HIGGINS- Betty Tan .-I kcvjwr of .vilclzrc vloqnczzt, 1Yct'a'y, yet royally well COIlfl'Cll'1f', Social Service '33, '34, '35, President of Junior and Senior class '34, '35, Athletic board '34, French plays '34, '35, Track team '33, '34, Rid- ing '33, '34, Katherine Berryman Cup '34, Li- brary assistant '33, Music Club '35. 1 y -if - Aa . The Little Colonel Bright Eyes Sunny Side Cp Lady by Choice XYomen Are Fielden nv S h Y -Q THE CANDLE ' Class Prophecy NE day in june 1950, as l was reading a daily paper I found the following items in Heather Plaid Horse's Keyhole Column: VVe would advise the Oh-No-No-Nite Club to advertise for a new hostess in view of the fact that a prosperous young doctor has been seen in constant company with Mary Frances lVright, who is hostess at the moment. It is rumoured that the next spectacular flight of Miss Marion Stone will not be a solo one. In case Mrs. Mercedes Gallaher Blank is interested, her millionaire husband has been seen in the company of a certain very alluring blonde quite frequently. Perhaps you had better cut short your visit to the Lido, Mrs. Blank. In the social columns I found only one item which interested me :- Society was royally entertained yesterday at a fox-hunt on the estate of Miss Elizabeth Higgins, the world-renowed philosopher. The well-known author, critic and pub- lisher, Miss Maudie VVarfel from London was introduced at dinner afterwards. Turning to the reviews of current literature, plays and movies, I found the names of many old classmates. Among the notices I read :- The credit of best seller goes once again to a book of poems from the pen of Miss Betty Barth , and also to a volume entitled: Subtle Humor Applied to Advantage , the author of which is our beloved humorist, Mildred Gelstharp. The critic of current hits pays tribute to a great comedian who has a large share in making the Follies the success it is-and we find we are reading about our own Dorothy B. McCormick in her famous Ben Blue act. VVe advise you all to see the Follies of 1950 if only to enjoy the songs of the hour as sung by that popular young lady of song, Doris Dougherty. I must confess that I did not expect to meet any familiar names among the advertisements but I was wrong. Several of my former classmates do work for an honest living, as these advertisements show :- The greatest dog-show on earth-Edwards' Dog Circus--The most famous trained dogs in the world, under the personal supervision of their owner, Ruth Edwards . Martha XVetmore, expert on finger-nails, advises Cutexf' Bridge for young wits taught in easy stages by Harriet Leschey, interna- tionally-knowri authority . For artistic curling of bangs, come to Moyer's Beauty Shop . CSO Margaret is manager and owner too, I seej. Correct your English with the help of Proper Speech and Expression by Peggy Fluke. 20 Tl-IE CANDLE Why I waited till the last to look at the front pages, I do not know unless it was a case of saving the best till last. Anyway, I was to receive a series of surprises when I turned to these headlines :- Marjorie Cook, first woman President of the United States, elected by a sweeping majority . Anne Greenawalt won the Blair County Pie-Eating Contest without diffi- culty consuming tifty pies in one houru. Pikeville College today celebrated the tenth anniversary of its experience under a woman President. Dr. Mary Jane Lee has done wonders for the school and is very popular with the student body . A perfect reproduction of the rubber plant has just been discovered by Helen Hughes, chemist on the staPf of Columbia University . Rebecca Patterson, head of the Girl Scouts of America, made a very im- pressive speech yesterday at the National Convention meeting in Chicago . Polly Young, accused of robbing a warehouse containing California lemons, has been acquitted on the grounds of temporary insanity caused by her craving for that fruit . And so I put aside the paper and think over the surprising items I have just read. It seems certain that my old class-mates are making their mark in the world. Senior, be just and good and fair. Take life seriously, yet see humor in it. Hold your head high and take care I1 ' 'N ' 1 lo be yourself-a benior every mlnute. Be wise. Don't lose your humility Be brave, and keep your courage bright. Don't be afraid to face reality. Be gay. In small things find delight. A Soft Answer Turneth Away Wrath. You say it's good-my criticism My writing you deplore. You like my humble witticism My style you like still more. You think my writing very bad My technique is still worse. Verbs and commas drive me mad. I'll try. Excuse this verse! Betty Barth. 21 Tl-IE CANDLE Class Will E, the class of nineteen hundred and thirty-five, of Highland Hall Holli- daysburg, in the state of Pennsylvania, being of sound mind, memory, and understanding, do make and publish this our last VVill and Testament. Going Fishing HE trouble began when I accepted what I felt was a not too warm invi- tation from Daddy that one of the girls go fishing with him. If Dad was disturbed at the immediate acceptance of his suggestion, he did not show it, and along I went with him, never thinking I should be a nuisance. From the start things went badly-in fact went from bad to worse. Now, I had chosen my prettiest summer frock in honor of the occasion. Dad asked if I hadn't more sense than to wear a white one. Thinking he was concerned about my getting the precious dress dirty, I took no offense at the question, but I had to ask why he handed out to me a very old jacket, torn and rather the worse for wear. Don't you know, he asked, that the white would frighten the fish ? I looked at him and laughed, but found he was not joking. Then we had to iind a boat. The first we selected leaked badly and we began to sink as soon as we had taken our seats. The second choice was better and we rowed out into the middle of the dam. It was interesting to watch Dad casting. I thought it very graceful and quite easy, and was anxious to try my luck. In response to my eager request for a lesson I was told that the first thing I had to learn was to keep quiet. It seemed that my lesson in that particular was to start right away! After some minutes of silence I began to hum to keep myself company. A Shush! crushed me for a while. He was not in such a bad humor but he had lost three fish and was getting there. Some one on shore hailed us cheerfully. I turned round to shout an answer, and rocked the boat. Daddy dropped his line and I caught it. But I didn't catch Daddy. He has not repeated his invitation. MCCORMICK 30 'i Tl-IE CANDLE Hockey HE 1934 Hockey season started out with a majority of new players on both the Tan and VVhite teams. As a result, intensive practice was necessary and no games were played until October nineteenth. This game was very close, and exciting to the very last, resulting in a score of three for the VVhites and one for the Tans. The second game was played October twenty-ninth, and the XVhites again won the contest by a score of two to the Tan's one. When, on November ninth the XVhites took the third game of the season by one point- Vtfhites three and Tans two-the Tans began to fear the loss of the Hockey title which they had held for the two previous years. The effect of this thought was beneficial to the Tans, for in the next game they came away with a victory of eight to one over the Wfhites. This sudden spurt of ability on the part of Tan players, however, did not last, and the Wfhites won the Final game, fXVhites four, Tans threej giving to them the 1934 Hockey title. Q56 Basketball HIS year's basketball season opened with decided victories for the lYhites in two preliminary games in January and February. There seemed to be no doubt as to the champions this year. The first of the series of ofiicial games on February 2nd gave the victory to the XYhites with a score of thirty-seven to live. The second encounter, one of the most spectacular games of the season, saw the other side victorious with the score of twenty-live to twenty-four. This reversal of the fortunes of the light seemed to put more spirit into the Tans and made the competition keener. The XYhites were top in the third game in which the Tans gave them a very exciting time. As we go to press, the issue of the championship is still to be decided. 31 THE CANDLE 1 Q' TAN HOCKEY TEAM .Uazzagur ... . ............................. H. 1 LbL1IlX L. lluwmau J. Hutson M. Cook ID. XVETMORE XYING to the result of the advertising campaign we have been able to plan and publish a book that is much more ambitious than was the case last year. Our friends have been numerous and generous and we are grateful for their help. A successful party in October added a useful sum to our funds. As we send the book to the printer, we do not know if we shall have a surplus but if such should be the case we are hoping to spend it on books for the library and magazine table. 34 TI-IE CANDLE The Choral Club 1iATRINE BARCLAY BETTY BARTH LAVINIA BOXYMAN IRUTHANE CAPERS MARJORIE COOK DORIS DOCGIIERTY ELEANOR EDXVARDS NIARIAN EDWARDS RUTH EDWARDS BqARY GARLAND NIILDRED GELSTIIARP .XNNE GRliI'IN.AXK'AI,1' JANE IQELSEY PIARRIET LESCHEY TJOROTHY B. XYe also want to thank several friends from outside the school for the loan of furniture and dresses that helped to create the impression of the days and the ways of the Napoleonic era. For most valuable help behind the scenes and in the publicity depart- ment, the following girls were made members of the Club: K. Barclay, R. Capers, M. Moyer and M. lYetmore. Other dramatic performances have been given during the year and among these the French plays stand out in memory. Elsewhere an account of this appears. The Lost Elevator was the chief attraction of the Hallowe'en party in the gymnasium and drew into the cast several girls who have since been elected to the club. Qur annual Christmas play, one of the old English Mysteries, was per- formed with suitable music on the Sunday before the breaking-up in Decem- ber. The scenes of the Annunciation, the Manger, the Shepherds, the Magi were most reverently and feelingly shown and the singing by the hidden choir added not a little to the inspiring effect of the whole presentation. 37 THE CANDLE Social Service . ldvisfr . . . . . . A4155 CATHERINE BURROVVES President ......... ......... R UTH B. VVe have raised funds for our work through the sale of Hershey Bars, by teas, and from the generous contribu- tions and pledges of the members of the school and faculty. VVe aim to help as many local and outside charities as possible. Our first check was sent to Mrs. Deem to help her dress Santa , who was, of course, the main feature of her Christmas treat for the children of Hollidaysburg. lYe wish to thank Miss Burrowes for her guidance and help, the faculty, students and friends of the school for their generous support of this important and appealing part of our school life. 38 WWZPZM ,fy .49 f 'C Tl-IE The Student Council .-ldzfiser .... Questions of all kinds have been brought up at the weekly meetings, discussed, and put before the student body by the members of the council. Certain privileges have been granted to the Seniors, the most appreciated of which is the conducting of Senior Chapel. XVith the help of our adviser, our aim has been to instil a sense of honor and pride in the traditions of the school into all those who look to us as leaders. 39 CANDLE Tl-IF CANDLE The Washington Trip FTER looking forward so long to the weekend trip to the capitol, we could hardly believe it when the 15th of March came round and noon found the tive of us packed in the school car and waving our excited goodbyes to the girls on the porch and at the windows. En route, we made a short stop at Mercersburg to see the very lovely school chapel. Then we resumed our journey, some knitting, and some look-- ing out eagerly for the markers on the road at historic spots, and later for the nrst glimpses of the buildings in XYashington. Arrived on the outskirts of the city, we admired many lovely houses and estates and looked for embassies and any buildings that seemed to be specially important. Our nrst duty after dinner was to go to the postoffice to buy the first issue of a special stamp for our collections, four of our party being eager philatelists. Next came a drive round the city to see the government buildings at night under the tlood-lights. NYe went inside the Congressional Library, and not for a long time shall we forget that wonderful view of the vast reading room as we saw it from one of the upper galleries. XYe admired the painted ceilings but most of all, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution claimed our reverent attention. These are preserved under glass and carefully guarded. Then there was the digniiied column that forms the Wiashington Monu- ment to be admired and the Lincoln Memorial in the same line of vision, with the stretch of water between rellecting the Capitol, As we drove by and looked in through the entrance, the figure of the great Emancipator seemed to be alive in his chair at the head of the steps. It is indeed a wonderful moving piece ul work. The front of the new Supreme Court building and the XYhite llouse, together with many of the executive offices of the government claimed our attention before we went to bed after a last look through our windows at the Capitol gleaming in the night. Next morning we began where we had left oil and went through the Capitol. lt would take too long for me to describe all the things the guide showed us and told us. ln the XYhite House, which claimed our attention next, we saw the different state rooms, in one of which was a display of the china used by various Presidents. Then we heard a debate in the Senate and were surprised to notice the informality with which it was conducted. That afternoon we drove out to see the home of George lYashington. The ride, the grounds, the gorgeous views across the Potomac from Mount Yernon, the house itself, especially its antique treasures all claimed their due share of admiration or reverent interest. The return trip allowed us a short stay at Christ Church, Alexandria where lVashington used to worship, and a 40 - -- THE CANDLE visit to the tomb of the lfnknown Soldier at Arlington Cemetery. Dinner and a movie finished the day, and we were not at all sorry to go to bed. On Sunday we rested during the morning, and broke our return journey to visit the great cathedral that is rising on Mt. St. Alban. A further stop for a meal was the only other interruption of the drive back to school with minds stored full of new impressions and grand memories of an unforgettable experience. To those who planned, to those who looked after us on the way and in the city our best thanks are due for a very happy weekend. SUSAN SXYARTZ. GSNQD ummer Session I-IEN I entered the gates of Columbia University for the summer session. my feelings were a mixture of excitement and fear! The size and the unfamiliarity of the institution fascinated yet intimidated me. Registration passed ofi' quickly and I was launched on the seas of new adventures before I had time to catch my breath. One thing I had firmly resolved to do. I was going to keep my inexperience hidden, and assume the detached manner of a veteran student. However, with memories of high school training fresh in my mind, I invariably sprang to my feet the minute my name was called for recitation. This childish and embarrass- ing habit, combined with my inability to recognise the beginning and ending of an assignment, surely must have given me away, but it took one last episode to convince the class of my youth. NVe were studying numerals, and as an exercise, the professor asked for the date of the birthdays of the students. .Xfter calling out names and receiving the answer Nineteen hundred and fourteen or fifteen as the case might be, he called on me, who in all simplicity and truth replied: Nineteen hundred and eighteen . There was a silence for a few seconds, then smiles and chuckles and finally the whole class burst into laughter. My pretenses were exposed. From that moment I was treated by my fellow- students as the baby of the class. They would point out, with maddening kind- ness, the place in translation every few minutes, or explain with infinite care some very obvious bit of grammar. Nevertheless, the summer was a wonderful one and I enjoyed myself greatly. I-'leasant memories of beer parties in the Deutsches Haus, and of other social events outweigh by far the memories of those first few confessions of my youth and ignorance. I left Columbia with many a backward glance. I had made many new friends and met new experiences and had had a small but very sweet taste of university life. HELEN Ht'c.HEs. 41 THE CANDLE Entertainments N january 29th, the lN'estminster Choir, under the direction of Dr. John Finley XYilliamson, gave a wonderful concert in Altoona. On this occasion the boarders were the guests of the school. The program of songs, both sacred and secular, delighted us all and the whole evening was a memorable experience for all of us, especially for those who had not had the opportunity of hearing this famous choir before. lVhat a lesson we had in attention to the conductor's baton, in attack , in light and shade, in enunciation! It was truly an inspiring experience from start to finish. February 16th was another red-letter day. Mr. Earle Spicer, the well-known baritone, gave an evening recital at school and remained for the week-end. His program included American and English ballads, ancient and modern, grave and gay. Of the selections from overseas, The Bashful Lover proved the favorite, while Shortenin' Bread and The Train Today to Morrow from the American section of the recital gave great pleasure and were repeated later. Gn Sunday morning, Mr. Spicer generously gave us a second recital before he left for his train. QXQG Addresses of the Faculty Miss ELIZABETH BALDVVIN .
