This year, as in years past, they have wisely budgeted the funds for activities and improvements. Through their untiring efforts they have made our school days most pleasant and profitable, 6 0 0 in WZEWTZWW C 7701 O93 f C 6251 0 6, Q0 2 L' Ex, XNXXXX XX X G 4- V656 iig P Wi-ev, -'V-' 3 Greetings to all: The publication of this 1952 edition of the High- lander by the members of the junior Class is another in- dication that the school year is drawing to a close. The class advisors, Miss Lloyd, Mrs. Powell, Mrs. Stewart, Mr. Grifhn and the Editorial Board, are to be congratulated for this splendid accomplishment. Their efforts have af- forded us the opportunity to live again the happy occasions recorded herein and to recall many pleasant schoolmates with whom we were associated. The termination of the present school year will mark the closing of my long administration as your Principal. I have been privileged to supervise the school and to be as- sisted by a group of students, teachers and non-teaching personnel whose equal it would be difficult to find. I am sensible of the great obligation I owe to each of them and to each, a sincere thank you. It is they who accomplished the imposing record credited to Highland Falls High School. Some one has compared life to climbing a rugged mountain. It is with effort that we ascend the slope each day growing stronger mentally, morally and physically. When the going is difficult as it is bound to be at times, one stops to rest and gazes back over the trail. Here and there are vivid green patches that stand out on the land- scape as pleasant, satisfying experiences. They instill the urge to press forward until the summit is reached. When ' I the goal is attained and there'is no further slope to climb, PROP- JAMES I- O'NEU-L, P'1'Yf1P4l a final glance back over the path of accomplishment is its own rewardg and then on into the shadows of the valley. The past twenty years shall always be cherished by me as the most pleasant years of my life. I shall often look back to the green pastures and live again the happy days that have been preserved in print and prose on the pages of the Highlander, I hope to be around for many years to come -- to visit the school - to talk with you and even though I shall not be your Principal, it is my hope that you shall always regard me as your friend. Cordially, Prof MR. FLOYD PECK In September, 1929, with an A. B. degree from Syracuse University and two years' teaching experience, I joined the High land Falls High School faculty. Classes were then held in the old building opposite our present school site, with Mr. Guy Has- kins as principal. During the past twenty years, our faculty and students have been fortunate in having the sincere and capable leadership of Professor james L. O'Neill. We are justly proud of our present student body and, likewise, of the solid American citizens who have in the past been loyal students of H. F. H. S. To Professor O'Neill and to the class of 1952, I extend my sincere congratulations for work well done, and may the future offer all that is best for each of you. Supervised by Mrs. Hankin, the participants i' I . 1 1 . I as Left to right-Sam Gates, Marjorie Brown, Charles Haines 26 Class Prophecy , Bernie and I were spending the weekend with Sarah jane and her ofhcer husband at West Point. After lunch we decided to stroll through West Point and Highland Falls. We passed Grant Hall, where jay Wohl, Mike Esposito, McCoy Smith and Sam Gates were waiting for their drags They said they liked being members of the Cadet Corps very much. We stopped at the Thayer Hotel where jimmy Baker was the manager. We entered the dining room and found Maureen Burke, Carol Carson, Linda Draper, Adrienne Nordlie, and Donna jones having cocktails with their ofiicer husbands. As we were passing the West Point Arms, Mary- alice beckoned us to go in, Betty and Maryalice are the co-owners. Matt Rhinefield and his Jumpin' Bugs were playing a two week stand there. Among his band members are August Reberholt and Wally Borger, comprising the brass section. Robina Mayer plays the piano and also substitutes as the bass fiddle player. As we left the Arms, we ran into Lois Mor- lock and Pat Pennington just returning from jack Ripa's Riding Academy. We decided to have our hair done at Toni's Razzle Dazzle Beauty Parlor. Much to our surprise we met Donna Archibald, Esther Weyant and Joyce Rathke, now hostesses in the Melody Lane, owned by Sistie Gorham. They told us that Dagmar and Muriel were on a trip to Bermuda with their husbands and that Lois Pfeil was taking care of their children at the Monahan and Melley Baby Clinic. While we were all together, we agreed to have our picture taken at Norman Kreitzeris U-Pose 'Em, We Snap 'Em Studios. There we learned that Mary Belladone and Barbara Blewitt were his famous models. Mary told us that Joyce Carpenter was the head of a foundling hospital and that Pat Meara was living in Colorado with her husband, Norman. As we approached the Terminal Building we encountered Doctor jean Rumpeltes entering her office. She told us that Tom Murphy owned the Storm King Rocket Service in the same building. Also in this building john and Peter McCabe have an Old Fashioned Hash House, and on the second floor jim Harper owned the Highland Falls Shooting Gallery. We continued our journey up to the High- land Falls High School, our old Alma Mater. Romeo Frattarola was the supervising principal, Marge Brown, Girls' P. T. Director, Larry Graber, football coach, and Lep Lo Presti, basketball coach. Romeo informed us that Teddy Maciejko was the mayor of Highland Falls. Sarah found a run in her stocking, and, as we were going into Blank's Department Store, we met Marilyn Work, Ann Conley and Pat Aumack. They told us that Bessie was the manager of Blank's. We decided that we would l.ike to go to New York for the evening so we all hopped into our Supersonic Helicopter. Arriving in New York, we all agreed on going to the Polo Grounds to see Larry Bower, Ray Diller, Bill Reilly and Sonny Haines play baseball for the New York Giants. As we watched Sonny's beautiful home run fly through the air, we happened to' see Beverly and jimmy jumping with oy at the rnagnificent home run. We all stopped off at Xavier High School to see Sissy Krieger, her husband was the coach of the Xavier football team. Since we were all together for the first time in so long, we wanted to go to a famous night spot and celebrate. Sissy suggested our going to Alice Frango's Diamond Clover. There we found Boxer Sakmann, Governor of Florida, joan Rose, his secretary, and Paul Hlavaty, Bear Mountain's Chief of Police. We enjoyed our- selves as much as we had in the good old days back H. F. H. S. Back in West Point the next day, Bernie and I thanked Sarah and her husband for a pleasant week- end and took our departure. ' MYRNA MILES SARAH JANE POWERS The Last Will and Testament 1 of the Class of 1952 We, the Senior Class of 1952, being of sound mind, body and spirit, do hereby bequeath these, our personal belongings, to the members of the Class of 1933. We couldn't wait to be graduated and show folks how the world should really be run. Eight years of our life had already been spent in school, the equivalent of a life jail sentenceg the school hours were endless, and Graduation Day was some faraway moment. But now that it's nearly here, webegin to wonder why we didn't enter more activities or try a little harder for those A's.', As we think back, some of the things we promised ourselves we'd remember forever have slipped way back into our minds. Letls take those big special days and those small warm details from their hiding places and recall once more what we'll forget too soon. REMEMBER FRESI-IMAN YEAR? As September, '48, came along, we found our- selves bewildered Freshmen, embarking on a career of four years of study. Freshman year brought the chance to try out for varsity sports for the boys and cheerleading for the girls. It also brought our class the honor of having a Freshman as Varsity King. Many of us took Latin and can still recall that Latin trip to New York as though it were yesterday. So the year ended, and we went away a lot wiser, We knew Civics and General Science and how to torment next year's Freshmen, but it was more than thatg we were growing up! REMEMBER SOPI-IOMORE YEAR? We really felt like big shots then. We were able to remain seated when the upper classes entered the auditorium. We published the Maroon and White under the direction of Mrs. Hankin, Mrs, Powell and Miss Higgins. Many of our Sophomore boys became well-known athletes. As the year ended, we all looked forward to being juniors and being able to produce The Higlander. REMEMBER JUNIOR YEAR? Our Junior year was really important to us be- cause it was then that we produced The Highlander for the class of 1951. It was really thrilling to see our plans go into action with the help of Miss Lloyd, Mrs. Powell, Mrs. Stewart and Mr. Griffin. We re- ceived our class rings in the spring, and, bursting with pride, we showed them to everyone. As the calendar announced the arrival of May, we juniors gave a combination prom with the Seniors. A lot of hard work went into itg and, as May 19th arrived, the auditorium was virtually transformed into a beautiful May garden, complete with real flowers. When Moving Up Day came, we proudly took our new seats in the Senior section of the assembly. We then looked forward with great anticipation to our Senior year. REMEMBER SENIOR YEAR? Now we were Seniors! How many of us thought the day would never come! The big event during October was the school Halloween Party when the Senior boys gave their hilarious skit in the auditorium. The Senior Prom, in November, proved to be the big- gest event of the year, We looked forward to our class trip, being measured for caps and gowns, ex- changing name cards, getting autographs, taking those last snapshots, receiving our yearbooks, attending the Athletic Banquet and our last Senior assembly. Finally Graduation itself, when we walked up to receive our diplomas as students and walked back as alumni of the Class of 1952. We, the Class of '52, sincerely hope that our successors will have memories as pleasant as those which we now take with us. Our ofhcers were elected and are as follows: Pres- ident, M. Burke, Vice President, C. Gorham, Secretary, B. Fowler, Treasurer, E. Davis and Sergeant-at-Arms, M. Smith. Our meetings are carried out in an orderly manner and at present have twenty-two mem- bers. After our meetings, we usually play a few games. . gm Art Club With the guidance of Mrs. Stewart, the Art Club has made soap carvings, helped to paint the Christmas windows, and at present is doing paper batik work. Many other things including a trip to an art museum are being considered. Library C lub The Library Club was successfully organized by Mrs. Hankin in September. Under the lead- ership of its officers, Joyce Carpenter, President, Adrienne Nordlie, Vice President, Bonny Sis- serson, Secretary, and janet Moore, Treasurer, the club has guided the members through a study of the library system. The members have applied this knowledge by becoming assistant librarians to Mrs. Hankin. Christmas Windows With the coming of Christmas we again viewed three brightly decorated windows de- signed by S. Avery, M. Urnaz and A. Vince- letti. Honorable mention designs were by B. june, B. Ramsdon and L. Morlock under the direction of Mrs. Stewart. ,J 5? Left lo rigbl-1. Yates, T. Murphy, T. Quinn, R. Vinceletti, M. Work, S. Avery, H. Murphy, C. Carson, L. Draper. Lefz to riglal-P. S., striving hard to keep in place with teams out of our class, ended the football season with a 4-3-1 record. Starting off the season by losing to Wappingers Falls, H. F. H. S. Came back with an astounding win over Liberty, winning by the score of 20-12. It seemed that that was all H. F. needed because we rolled over Goshen 31-8 and then went on to beat Highland, 19-13. H, F. H. S.'s basketball rivals, Cornwall, proved to be no match for the Woodmeng and H. F. played with two of its stars missing. H. F. 19, Cornwall 6. H. F. played its best game of the season on a cold Friday night, Beacon was supposed to be the best football. team in the Hudson Valley but H. F. out-played them the whole game and the score ended 15-13. H. F. H. S. slipped the last two games, losing to Walden 12-O and Haver- straw 31-7. Although H. F, H. S. lost three games, they had one of their best years. H. fwf' fffxi' Sealed-R. Mesaris, j. W'ohl, E. Davis, H. Maher, J. Dillon, A. Vinceletti, T. Maciejko, C. Haines, T. Murphy, G. Regan, J. Gruno, C. Conero, J. Baker, Mr. Wood. Track H. F. H. S., always the best'l in Track, proved itself last year by going undefeated for the second year in a row. Many coaches feel that H. F. H. S. shoul.dn't be allowed to compete with their teams because H. F. H. S. is so powerful. H. F. H. S. won all its dual track meets by beating Goshen, Haver- straw, Cornwall. H. F, went on to win the Orange County Championship which we won for the last three years. At the Newburgh Relays we broke one record and tied one. Kenny Rosser broke the javelin record and our terrific relay team made up of Andy Sharp, Kelly Rossi, Russ Vingoe and Eddie Glassing tied their record. H. F. H. S. entered the Section 9 track meet a heavy favorite but only won by two points. H. F. H. S. ended the season undefeated and untied. Left zo righthA. Tosolini, E. Davis, J. Wohl, M. Smith, J. Barton, Mr. Fish. Tennis Team Under the guidance of Mr. Kenneth Fish, . a tennis team was organized last year. Since tennis had not been played for many years the 1951 season looked poor. However, with long hours of practice, the team was finally ready to test its strength against Montgom- ery. The Raiders tied their more experienced opponents. In the remainder of the season, the team defeated Cornwall twice, and lost to strong teams from Goshen, Washington- ville and Monroe. The prospects for the 1952 season are bright with most of the players returning. Ji Minor Sports Left lo right-A. Tosolini, E. Davis, M. Smith, , T. Maciejko, P. Hlavaty, W. Borger, V. Rush.
