The young and bright and agile mind will find a better way, And give mankind a brighter look - a new and brighter day. There is a certain spirit in the shorter time of years, For Youth therein lies power and hope, much accustomed to tears. But now, throw off that unstable look, that clumsy, awkward guise, And look into the eyes of Youth, the strong, clear Future's eyes. ln the past and still today, Youth holds in its hands The task to solve the problems ot the world and meet its great demands. So laugh not at their untried ways, their goals which are set too high, For in their time, they'll grit their teeth and give that goal a try. So now, you men of larger time to the power of Youth do yield, And let them have the next try - it's their turn Time's sword to wield. And as before, when time is done, to the next youth they'll give the line, And to give the phrase of Youth: The Future is mine, all mine! The Future is mine! lt's mine! You left the phone off the hook, sobbed Mrs. Portal. Mr. Portal got to his feet, hung up the telephone and fell back in his chair. I can't believe it, he started for the thirtieth time, sud- denly interrupted bythe ringing phone. I'll get it, he said, and picked up the receiver . . . Hello? Mr, William T. Portal? asked a voice. Yes? I'm John Carmichael of the JOURNAL. I understand you've inherited quite a large sum of money. . H31 million dollars! whooped Mr. Portal. '. . . and we'd like to do a fea- ture on you. Now, who was it that willed you the money? 36 The Inheritance hy Biff Enoch A cousin, replied Portal, named Phineas P. Portal. Uh, hold it, he said and covered the receiver. lt's a reporter from the JOURNAL, he explained to his wife. Sounds great, Mr. Portal, con- tinued Carmichael. When did you find out? Not fifteen minutes ago, when some lawyers called, laughed Por- tal. lt's the greatest thing that ever happened to me! I never even heard of this guy, and he leaves me 31 million dollars! I'm rich! Mr. Portal, I wonder if I might come out to your home for an inter- view, asked Carmichael, sensing Portal's agitated state. Sure, fine, said Portal. lt's 3417 Lincoln Drive, just off 34th Street. Just come anytime - I'm not going to work today. I mean, he burst out laughing, what's the use now? O.K., great, said the reporter, l'll be there in about an hour. Oh, one last thing: How does your wife feel about all this? Mr. Portal looked over at his wife, who was wiping the tears out of her eyes with a breakfast nap- kin. She iust feels great! 3417 Lincoln Drive was a single- story house in the middle of the block on a narrow street in the mid- dle-class suburban area of Kirkville. Spring flowers surrounded the front of the house and encircled two large oak trees in the front lawn. Thick grass testified to careful weekend management, and it stretched from the Portal's drive- way to their neighbor's, whose own thick grass sprouted spring flowers, oak trees, and a single-story house identical to those of each resident of the block. By 9:30 A.M., most homes had already bundled children and hus- bands off for the clay, leaving wives to wash and dust and polish and cry at soap operas, by now, most wives had already cleared the breakfast table. In the Portal's, the eggs had hardened beyond repair. I'm going to have to take that phone off the hook, said Mr. Por- tal as he went to answer it. Hello? Yes, it is. Oh! he said and covered the mouthpiece. This is Channel A, he hissed to his wife, they want to send out a camera crew. l'll have to clean up the house, she began, but her hus- band was already back on the phone. Come on out, he breezed, we'll be waiting for you. Good- bye! Well, if you got to clean up, clean up, he told his wife, but make it quick. They'll be right out. Mrs. Portal got up from the breakfast table and smoothed her robe. l'll change first, she said, and went to the bedroom. While she was dressing, the doorbell rang. l'll get it, said Mr. Portal, and when he did he found a short man in a brown leisure suit. Mr. Portal? the man asked. Sure thing. l'm James Ford, Kirkville SUN- TIMES, and I wonder if you'd mind my coming in to talk to you for a bit? Not at all, said Portal. Come right in! O.K., Charlie, the reporter called back, Come on in! A nonchalant photographer crawled out of a white chevy and, wrapped in cameras, followed Ford into the house. Nice place you have here, Ford said, but I guess you'll be moving into something a little more elegant? Oh, sure, but we don't really know anything for sure yet . . . why don't we sit here in the living room to talk? Ford sat down on the coach, Por- tal sat in an armchair, and the pho- tographer busily took readings and set his cameras. Now then, Mr. Portal, began the reporter, when did you first learn of the inheritance? Well, it was iust at breakfast, when the phone rang . . started Portal, just as the phone obligingly rang. l'll get it, called Mrs. Portal, as she sidestepped the photographer on her way to the kitchen. Phone's been pretty busy ever since, apologized Mr. Portal. Well, these lawyers called and said that a Phineas P. Portal had died and left 31 million dollars to a cousin named William T. Portal, and that's me. Were the two of you close childhood friends? Well, actually Portal began, interrupted by his wife. Honey, it's the men from Chan- nel 9, and they want to know if they can come out and interview is US. Sure, tell 'em to come on. Now, as I was saying, Portal said as a flashbulb blinded him, l really don't remember this cousin too well, but I guess he knew a lot about the family to remember me. The doorbell brought Mrs. Portal running. Tell me how you felt, said Ford. Gosh, we just couldn't believe it. This has got to be the greatest thing that's ever happened to me. A tall man in a blue suit entered the room, followed by two men in blue ieans carrying large cases with a stylistic four emblazoned on the sides. Hi, said the tall man, l'm Bert Hodges from Channel Four. Bill Portal, said Portal, stand- ing. Come on in. I was iust talking with this man from the paper. . Go right ahead. We'lI need time to set up. Could I get a picture with the wife and kids? asked Charlie, the photographer. Oh, gosh! cried Mr. Portal. We haven't told Bill, Jr.! I'II call the school right away, said Mrs. Portal. She tried to shut the front door, but it was blocked by a man's hand. Excuse me, she said, looking out. l'm John Carmichael from the JOURNAL, said the man standing outside. I was supposed to talk to a William Portal? Oh, come in, said Mrs. Portal. He's in the living room. Carmichael led his photographer into where Mr. Portal was. Maybe if you sat over here, one of the TV men was directing. What about MY lighting? demanded Charlie. 38 We've got enough lights, said the TV man. What do you plan to do with the money? asked reporter Ford. Well, I haven't made any defi- nite pIans, said Portal. I guess I could do about anything I wanted. The phone rang. l'Il get it, called Mrs. Portal. John Carmichael, Kirkville JOURNAL, said Carmichael, try- ing to get Portal's attention. We talked earlier. . Oh yeah, sit down, directed Portal. I was lust saying to Mr., uh, Ford that I didn't have any defi- nite plans for the money yet. . The doorbell rang, and Mr. Por- tal apologized to the two reporters, and threaded his way around an increasing pile of lights, cameras and sound equipment. Could you show us your wall plugs? asked one of the techni- cians. Sure, hang on, said Portal, and went to answer the door. Mr. Portal? said the man who was waiting outside. I'm Fred Johnson, Chicago TIMES, and I wonder if I could talk with you for a moment? 3417 Lincoln Drive was a single- story house in the middle of the block on a narrow street that was now choked with an assortment of cars, vans, trucks, and trailers. Spring flowers and thick grass alike had now been trampled by the assembly of news media now packed into the Portal home. It was 3:30, and most wives had already cleared away lunch. A fly settled on the eggs in the Portal kitchen, until he was dis- turbed by Mrs. Portal rushing to answer the phone. Hello, she said desperately, then called into Mr. Portal, Honey, it's for you! Mr. Portal got up from the dining room table, which was now blos- soming with a centerpiece of micro- phones, and came into the kitchen. Hello, he said wearily. Bill? Who IS this? I don't know any cousin John. This is cousin John. Well, old John sure didn't for- get you, said the supposed cousin, and since the wife and I have been having so much trouble lately we iust knew you'd remem- ber us in our time of need. Mr. Portal angrily hung up. Mary! he called. In here, she called back from the living room. The newly-made millionaire went to talk with her, and was greeted by a burst of flashbulbs and chorus of questions. Mr, Portal, what do you think you'Il buy first? Where is the money now? Are you going to retire? Where is your restroom? Can I use your telephone? The telephone, though, was already ringing. Mrs. Portal brushed by Mr. Portal, who was try- ing to answer everyone at once. It's for you - some woman, she reported, with a strange look on her face. HelIo? said Mr. Portal. BiII? Who is this? You know who this is, said a husky voice, and if you don't send me a million dollars everyone will know about us. Mr. Portal hung up in disgust and tramped back to the living room, taking his place beside his dazed wife. Could you iust give us a state- ment, said a network broadcaster. Mr. Portal thought a moment as the cameras whirred and clicked. I never thought it would be this much trouble to be rich, he said, and a glazed look came into his eyes. I . . . I iust wish everyone wasn't so interested all of a sudden. A technician stuck his head out the kitchen door. Mr. Portal - phone for you. Bill Portal wearily went to the phone to answer it. Mr, Portal? Yes. I guess you've been pretty excited all day. Uh. . .sure. Well, l've got some disappoint- ing news for you. Hold it. Mr. Portal shut the liv- ing room door. What is it? Well, there's been a kind of mix-up . . . the William T. Portal we were looking for lives in Chi- cago. Uh . . . I hope this isn't too hard for you. Mr. Portal listened to the cacoph- ony of reporters in the living room trying to get the furniture out of the way. A policeman was trying to get the street cleared, and his wife burst into the kitchen in tears. Listen, he said, when you call that guy, give him all my sym- pathy. And as Bill Portal went back to the living room, he didn't mean for the death of a rich cousin. ff 40 41 W 'W'i 1 ,1 IH 9 ','w'w5, 3 . 2 Y I , . 6, f I 43 I ,e L. K Jr X I ff 3 .Q fn 45 ! I ,S 1 ,f 3 1 Us Bl 40' View Transcendentalism by Lisa Pearson It had been a gift, that revealing. I'd wanted to tell him everything, of course. It was as though I had saved it all to present as a token of my worth, to be convincing. He had smiled at me, then walked away. It was now nearing the end of summer, the end of the spell of heat and squinting eyes that I detest so much. I ached for the fall, waiting for the world to come back to life, waiting for colors and security to return. We were staying near the beach now, a crowd of people in a little house on stilts. The walls shook when one ran through that house. The people were acquaintances, all of them. Buffet meals and half-wit conversation. The sun was always glaring, there was always a little salt in the air, and there was always grit under our feet. All around us swirled bright orange and white canvas and vinyl, waving, Be cheerful! Have fun! We changed in and out of bathing suits and never brushed our hair. The only time I felt a little bit alive was when, in the late afternoon, I went to the beach alone and stood gazing at sweeping waves and blue and white light, and felt the air becoming cool around me, and dreamed of drowning. I felt worthy when solitary. I felt the waves and the sky did not resent me when I came alone. I was treated kindly when alone at the seashore. The waves did not try to frighten me with crashing when I stood alone. The sun did not torture me, and the sky carried me away, lifted me almost to Heaven, but I was still alone, and I drank the blue, and it enveloped me. I walk the beaches now, it washes me. Whatever has happened, whatever happens, I have this. The sand is flesh-colored, but unlike flesh, it asks nothing of me, it never deepens in color. It was only natural to pick up the shell which caught my eye, but its being gray-blue made all the difference. l'll make a necklace. l've never made a necklace before. Other people make necklaces. But no, those thoughts came later. At the seashore, it was only china-blue and white and a little gold, and pictures, sails on the horizon. He could of course rise out of the waves, or fade in before the sun without a hint of shadow, and always those eyes shining almost black. Reality. The way he'd looked at me. He'd asked, after all. They can only hurt you if YOU know you've done wrong. I'd only held out my hands and the soul they'd clutched. I was not demanding, not begging, not even asking, only giving. Execution with no crime is murder. I had died. l But I hadn't really. I had only pulled inside myself like a snail. I was lying dormant somewhere within myself. I stood in the sun, staring at the blue, realizing that here will always be that part of me, a small sigh, a capillary in my wrist, that belongs here, which is part of the blue and rises with the waves. ,,...,.,-... ---W - ------ f 1 ,sw 'ff-ff ', f f VZ I ' I QA EI 22 gg 'X vt: fm, . .2 ' .2 it Ia?:fIII. 0' ff Zi -'ff' ffffifjffffiiw vI ' 77201. Stevie and the Gang by Gerald Gilmore, II We were all pretty dirty, I guess. I had mud on my shirt and tennis, and my mom told me that when I got dirt on my tennis then I was a dirty boy and I shouldn't come in the house. So now I had mud on my shirt too, so did all the other guys. We were all dirty. The bell had lust ranged for us to come back to class from recess, but we didn't want to go back in there with Miss Harp 'cause we knew she was gonna make us sit down and couldn't say nothing. Stevie Schulcowski was the toughest guy in class, and he met all the guys at the door into the school and gathered us all together in a football huddle and told us that he wasn't gonna go back in to Miss Harp's and how many of us was with him. Then everybody looked around at everybody else so Bobby Goldstein, the second toughest, said that he wasn't going either, then he asked us who was with him. A few others of the guys said that they were with him and then I did and finally we all decided that we wasn't going back. Then we all raised our heads - I was glad too 'cause I was get- ting a crook in my neck from looking at Stevie. s We all started to run to the playground but Stevie yelled out that we had to tell Miss Harp face-to- face that we wasn't coming back or else we wouldn't be his friends. Everybody stipped running and we all looked back at Stevie standing there. Then I yelled back if we really had to do that and how come we couldn't iust play. He said that we had to do it, but he would lead us. I felt like I could ask him that 'cause sometimes he called me his right-hand man with his hand on my shoulder. Some- times he called me his co-pilot - I was glad I could talk to him. We all walked back to him and huddled again. Stevie was next to me in the huddle and put his arm across my back and across the back of the guy on the other side. He spoke in a husky voice that he always used when he was being tough. Stevie told us that none of had to say nothing, and he would do all the talking. We were iust supposed to back him up. We agreed and everybody turned out of the huddle and walked through the door and down the hall to Miss Harp's room. I was getting really scared. Stevie led us into the room, and there Miss Harp was sitting there. I always liked looking at her hair - gold and all puffed up over her head. She smiled real big at us and told us to take our seats - but for the first time we did not do what she said - we lust stood there. Stevie stood in front of us all ganged up behind him. He folded his arms over his chest and stood looking real tough. Miss Harp told us to sit down again but this time Stevie said he wasn't gonna and we wanted to go out and play again. He asked us if we agreed - nobody said nothing. I was standing next to him and he elbowed me - I swallowed hard, but we all stayed quiet. Miss Harp looked us all over, and Stevie asked for us to agree with him again, but a few of the guys iust cleared their throats or coughed. Finally Miss Harp asked Bobby to sit down and he turned white as a sheet looking at Stevie - then at Miss Harp and they were looking back at him. I could see him start to sweat on his forehead, but after a long time, he walked to his seat and sat down. Then Miss Harp asked me to sit. My knees started to shake in my pants - Stevie was my friend - could I let him down? But then Miss Harp said she would tell my parents and her face turned real hard. My knees shook all the way to my chair. Slowly, all the guys started going for their chairs and then Stevie was the last one left - watching us all go and still standing there like Wyatt Earp. Miss Harp walked to Stevie and whispered something in his ear. I saw tears well up in his eyes, and she stood straight again, but Stevie shook his had no. Miss Harp whispered something else to Stevie and this time he stood there for a while but I could see him starting to cry and he slowly walked to his chair and sat. Miss Harp walked back to her desk and picked up the spelling book and told us to open our books and begin to read. We all did what she said in a hurry. But while my eyes were staying in that book, I could hear Stevie crying real soft so nobody would hear. We all started our spelling drills. I felt rotten. -3 X +., avg 'iffviv ,EL Ms., -1 W E xi f f.f-' .741-X , ,gf X, Q jg, AX Untitled by Karen Lee The aborters and abusers, adorned with gilded petals, fragile petals of power, play golf in the sky, with balls scraped from lives. Carelessly swinging away into sandtraps and trees missing the holes. The amateurs sight a sheer heaven and sport their insignias on a sleeve before a double-barreled mirror. The reflection will blast the petals from their breasts in the fall. Hut, twooo, threee, fourrr! It was a crisp, clean morning etched in baby blue skies and warm sunrays and the peaceful silence of the air was broken by the sound of two marching feet and another loud and raspy, Hut, twoo, three, four! Hut two, three, four! The feet were those of a sturdy old man donned in an outdated military uniform and combat boots. Hut, two, three, four . . . Com- panyyy halt! The marching stopped. At ease, men! The troops rested. Now men, - . . . I want you to know that you fought a fine bat- tle last night and l'm proud to say l'l'lC.If . . .H It was Colonel Hollingswood's morning address to the troops. He had given it every morning since his retirement at age 60, twelve years ago, and he didn't intend to change today. The other inhabit- ants of the park didn't obiect too much, in fact they looked forward to the morning production. Every morning at precisely ten-fifteen, the colonel would lead his troops on 76 by Leslie Rotenberry their hike to the park and deliver his address. . . AIII right now men . . . carry onn . . . Hut, twoo, three, four! Hut, twoo, threee, fourr . . . uh, lieutenant Rocksford, may l see you a moment please? The old man iudiciously sat down on the park bench, resting his wrin- kled hands on his knees. Lieutenant, l'd like to dictate a letter to General Bennington . . . Ready? . . . That's a good man, . . . now, uhh . . . Dearr Bobby . . . we fought together in Korea, you know . . . what's that? Ohhh yes, . . . side by side . . . bosom buddies. . . now, uh . . . ah, yes! . . .Dearrr Bobby. . As the general continued to dic- tate his letter to a nearby magnolia tree, a charming little woman of about sixty-five, who looked as if she were pulling something behind her, tottered up to the bench, and awkwardly plopped herself down. Her soft, powdered face was framed with gentle snow-white hair and her eyes shone brightly with life. The color in her cheeks matched her red velvet purse and hat, which was courtesy of Eleanor Roosevelt. She seemed to be taking great care with the obiect she believed to be sitting beside her, but finally she settled herself prop- erly on the bench. Good morning, Colonel Holl- ingswood. What? . . . Oh, uh, excuse me Lieutenant. The tree didn't respond. Now behave yourself, Win- throp. Why, uh what is that you have there, Mrs. Pennyford? Well aren't you seeing well this morning, Colonel? This is my new pet llama, Winthrop. Mrs. Pennyford was directing her attention toward a vacant plot of St. Augustine grass. Ohhh . . . of course, Mrs. Pen- nyford. Ever since Mrs. Pennyford's daughter-in-law had taken her to the zoo last week, she had insisted that she must have a llama. Mrs. Pennyford could never take no for an answer. He's been misbehaving terribly this week and I don't know what to do with him. Hmmm . . . well, why don't you ship him back to Tibet, haaaw, haaaw, haaaw! Why, Colonel, l'm shocked! Please lower your voice. Winthrop might hear you! Oh, of course, Mrs. Pennyford, l'm terribly sorry . . . Well, I must be getting back to the lieutenant here. Fine young man, isn't he? The lieutenant was sprouting magnolia blossoms by this time. The lieutenant? Oh, of course, Colonel. How do you do lieutenant? The tree was silent. Uhhh, he's the, uh, quiet type, you know. Ohhh, yes, of course. Now, uh, where were we Lieu- tenant Rocksford? What's that? Ah yes, in reference to your letter of the thirteenth. . As the colonel proceeded with his letter, Mrs. Pennyford returned to her plot of grass. Now, Winthrop, I want you to be a good boy or mama will have to confine you to your room for a week. And there they sat. Colonel Holl- ingswood dictating to the magno- lias and Mrs. Pennyford lecturing the grass. Each one was good enough to let the other have his own private happiness. Of course everyone knows that magnolias can't talk and that llamas are only found in zoos. Everyone, that is, except the Colonel and Mrs. Penny- ford. 11,4121 X' JE ii..
