But even a quick sketch, a snapshot, or a brief sentence may preserve for your eye and mind at least some typical moments of your four years here. And these may serve to recall much more - about your classmates and your teachers, about G.O. and games and assemblies, concerts and exhibitions, plays and publications -- and per- haps, too, something memorable that you learned in a classroom. You will want to keep this little book. In years to come you will want to see what you and your school and all your friends were like when you left us, way back in June, 1957. And so you will return to these pages with renewed interest. You will find them reflecting, we hope, the happiness that was yours at Music and Art. It was a Monday morning and I found myself with absolutely nothing to do for there was no school that day. I was dead set against staying at home, for my mother, perceiving my lack of occupation would have put me to work at sewing on buttons, or at the least, made me memorize lists of words for the college boards. Thus I started out in search of a friend, a fellow art student whom I shall call Smith for I know she wouldn't like me to bandy her name around where it might be recognized. When I finally found her, I discovered that she too was looking for an interesting and inexpensive way to spend the holiday. Several suggestions were proposed and rapidly discarded until, after due processes of thought, we decided that our Art Survey Museum Reports were soon due and that it was inevitable that we turn them in. Smith, being in Mr. Pattersonis class and therefore knowing all the answers, decided that we'd better go visit the Cloisters because everybody knows that the Cloisters were very f'arty', and medieval and art survey teachers always thought you were very earnest if you went to them by yourself. Ergo, with fifty cents in my wallet and armed with a pencil and a small notebook with which we could amuse ourselves, we started walking down Fort Wash- ington Avenue or whatever street that is that runs up the Fort Tryon Park. This has been an introduction designed to introduce chance readers to the circum- stances which made possible the event which I shall now narrate to the best of my ability. Mr. Koehler, are you still with me? We walked for an awfully long time for neither of us live in Washington Heights, but finally we passed a hospital, a post office and then came to the entrance of the park. It was about 2:30 in the afternoon and quite warm for that time of year. Smith took a ball out of her pocket, and we began to play AmynameisAlice, BmynameisBetty, all the way down to Rmynameis- Rhododendron, at which time it began to rain and all REPORT the old ladies on the park benches began to run for cover. This took our mind off the game, so we stopped playing. I ran up a big green hill, and Smith brought up the rear, holding on to our rubber ball since it was the only one we had. We ran around in the rain for a while and got pretty wet so that we could have fun without having to worry about how to keep dry. We saw lots of pigeons who were flying. Finally the rain stopped, and remembering our original errand, we started climbing up to the top of the park where the Cloisters are located. We climbed for an hour or so until at last we saw a big iron gate and bushes and glimpses of a fountain behind the gate. This made us feel very good except for the large sign saying 'SCLOSED ON HOLI- DAYS . That made us feel very bad, and we almost decided to stay the night and wait for Tuesday, but we knew our mothers would miss us, and so after glimpsing the mixed up columns and the tapestries and buttresses and pigeons, we started down the steep path again. Soon it began to rain very hard and grow very dark and thunder, and we grew frightened. Oh, do you think that perhaps we are lost? , said Smith. Oh, I do hope that we are not lost, I said. It was very exciting. Oh, look. Here are some green berries. Perhaps they are poison, said Smith. Let us eat them for lunch. I like poison berries. Oh, I said, if these are poison berries, maybe we are in the wilderness, and we must make plans to jind our way back to civilization. It was raining very hard by this time and quite dark. We drew some pictures, and then we came to a little cave in the rocks. We decided to stay in the cave until it stopped raining. So we went inside and sat down. Pretty soon some little boys of about nine or ten came into the cave. They were very polite and offered us a cigarette, which we politely refused. Then they decided it was cold, so they built a tire. Oh, let us throw a fire cracker into the little fre to make it bigger, said one of the little boys. Oh yes, let us do that, said the other little boy. You had better move back for it will explode, he said addressing himself to us. So we moved back, and it exploded with a BOOM, BANG, BAM WHANG. After the smoke cleared, it got lighter, and the little boys went away. Oh, look. Look at that lovely primitive incised cave drawing on the wall, said Smith. Oh, I said, Isn't that a lovely incised paleolithic cave drawing? Oh, perhaps we have discovered a revelation in archeological history, said Smith. I wonder whether it is Neanderthal or Cro Magnon. Oh, perhaps it is Piltdownf' I said hopefully.-It was a very interesting animal with a large nose and a flower. Oh, said Smith, perhaps our art survey teachers will like this ever so much more than an ordinary dull report on the Cloisters. This shows incentive. Perhaps we will become famous. And look, there are some word-like symbols underneath the picture. Perhaps we have come across the forerunner of the Phonoecian alphabet. Let us copy them down for further reference. We copied them down in my little notebook, and by that time it had stopped rainingg so we left the little cave and went back down to Fort Washington Avenue. We decided that we had better take the train home and come back some other time. However, we never got the chance to come back, but we thought that since you would know that our hearts were in the right place and that we had just chanced to pick the wrong day of the week, you would understand. After all we did get a glimpse of a fountain behind the fence, and we did mean well. And if you go to the cave on the way up to the Cloisters, you will find our discovery of the incised drawing on the wall.
