Prnm the Letter nf a Soldier . . . In twenty-five years, we may look back on this trying period as a downright necessity. 'l'his war is not merely a bit of First Aid to an ailing world. It is a particular major operation which is needed to cut out that malignant growth of dictatorship, of tyranny, of all those conditions which made that growth possible. What the fighting men of today want to know, from the plains of Africa to the ice jammed Aleutians, is, in effect: 'fAfter the operation . . . after we have removed the causes of the fear, hunger, poverty, suppression . . . will you, who are our leaders, our senators, and newspapermen, radio commentators, farmers, leading citi- zens in every community, in every walk of life, in every city and town . . . will you remove for all time the cause of this and all other wars, by removing those factors which lowered the resistance of our world until the germs of fascism developed? As we change ourselves to a fighting, killing, destructive force, eating away at the vitals of that thing which seeks to crush us, we will see to it that there is an end to want, to hunger, fear, and that men can worship as they please. VVe will feed the war-weary and hungry nations and teach them to trust, and have faith in living in peace again. We are going on training, studying, becoming tougher, stronger and better in every way. VVe are out to win. VVe must win, so that this world of ours can live in peace, and our children won't have to light the way we're fighting, and as our fathers fought before us. PRIVATE LEONARD RUTSTEIN 9
