OUR GRADUATES' IN SPORTS ,Suhr ,Wa M . :a Q Q GEREN4. In Ianuary, Commerce coaches begin their semi-annual tear-jag over losing their prize playersg however, they are getting off easy this time since only the Soccer and Swimming Teams will suffer losses. The Soccer Team, under Mr. Towbin's guidance, has been moving along in the usual Commerce fashion-winning all games. But on October 18th, Eddie Santos, captain and star performer, suffered a broken ankle, which in- capacitated him for the rest of the season. The judge, though comparatively small in stature, had looked plenty big to the opposition. Another first-team man to go is Sabino Mendoza. Mendy is one of Mr. Towbin's gym-class alumni. His determination and ability to learn have advanced him over many men to the position of varsity half-back. The Tank, Gus Katsaros, has played on the '47 and '48 Soccer Squads. As his nickname suggests, he has been a fearless fighter with plenty of intestinal fortitude. His position of defense at varsity left fullback has been impregnable. The right fullback position has been filled by yours truly. Rusty F laherty-that's me-was the official orange toter, or manager, of the 1947 Manhattan Champ Squad. This year he was demoted to first-string fullback. Quotes-not mine-Always reliable and steady, he has been a tower of strength on the team. Unquote. Christy Vele- sarion has been a member of the team for two seasons. He is the non-profit middleman responsible for those colorful jackets the team wears. Always a clean, steady player, he would be an asset to any team. All teams have their geniuses and Soccer has its Eric Levy. His efforts on the field have paralleled his scholarship. He is valuable both as halfback and fullback. Robert Bligh has also been on the team for two seasons. He is a good player with plenty of soccer savvy. The Musclemen of Commerce --Mr. Force's Gym Club-are happy to announce that the cast in their annual gymnast show will not be depleted. The members, having no Seniors among them, will continue to amaze and amuze for many terms to come. Another team which will not suffer depletion this term is the Basketball Team, under Coach Wolfe's direction. lt has taken the spotlight formerly held by football. Its record of 32 victories against 7 losses for thc last two terms is a high standard to keep or surpass. This year's team is rich in ex-

OUR GRADUA T ES IN SPOR T S 5 ' W fffiw ll W T p ,gg M., perieneed players and should go far. With many former Commerce players now taking part in college basketball, the present veterans look hopefully to their own future and the student body anticipates great scores. The Aquamen of Commerce are hit hard by the Day of Liberation. This team, under the sharp direction of Mr. Maehleid, will sorely miss five good men. Mayor Garnell Smith, member for live terms, co-captain for one term and captain for two, and twice major-letter winner, has been living proof that you ean't keep a good man down. Sonny Cavaseno, member for eight terms and major-letter winner three times, possesses a steadiness and ability to come through in the clutch, both of which have clinched many meets for the team. Steven Knopp, member for five terms and major-letter winner from away back, is the 220-yard free-style expert. Swift and tireless, Steve has been a threat to opponents. Larry Kilga, another five-term vet and twice major-letter winner, is expected Io take the City Breast-stroke Cham- pionship this year! Arthur Bates F erguson, manager for two terms, has faith- fully upheld the high traditions established by his predecessors. The Commerce Baseball Team, which captured second place in the 1948 Manhattan Championship, is losing not in quantity but in quality. Mr. Flynn, the coach, will miss two men. joseph Di Donato has been a member of the team for two seasons and captain for the last. A really sharp short- stop, hc has been a vital factor in the team's successful season. His prolific bat has also turned in many runs for Commerce. Alfred Minaya has also been on the team for two seasons. His heads-up play at first base has helped win many games. Another team under Mr. Flynn's direction is the Cross-Country. It loses only one player but, as usual, the number one man, Anthony Iirninez, one of the City's best cross-country runners. His speed and endurance have helped his team to victory time after time. ln conclusion, may I sum up the athletes' feelings on leaving-and per- haps the feelings of those remaining-by quoting an inscription found on an old Boston grave-stone: He couldn't stay, he had to go. Thank Cod, from VVhom all blessings flow. DAVID FLAHERTY
