We shall re- of C.H.S. . class of '56 will be another link in the long chain of C.H.S. graduates. We'll pass through the gate and leave the building behind but there are some things we'll have with us always. We know that we shall never forget this school, its traditions, and its heritage. lt helped make us what we are and gave us memories of won- derful years. We remember that first year, that first day. Waiting to be assigned to homeroom groups. We gathered in the auditorium. The new principal, Mr. John E. Rogers told us that it was his first year too and that we were all subfreshmen together. lt made us feel a little less afraid when we rea- lized that we weren't the only ones here for the first time. The year passed quickly. Some of us joined a club or two, but for the most part, we concentrated on getting used to our new way of life. Our counsellors helped us select courses for the next fall. Then it was September, l952. We looked forward to coming back be- cause we were no longer new at Charleston High. We felt more at home and tried to help students from across the Ashley who joined the ninth . f X S . fx-sv . I ' . . i .. E - Q S x - K. .S .. Q g. A .,...gr.x.,.g.i,.kXk Autumn came again and we were l Sophomores. We began to really get into thingsg taking more active parts in clubs and running for positions on the Student Council. Choosing our class ring was a spe- cial part of being rising juniors. Ours, we decided, would be changed slightly . from the previous year's but would, of I course, bear the Seal of the City of Charleston and the Bantam emblem of which we are so proud. That same year, Miss Olga Johanns became dean, succeeding Miss Eliza- beth Clotworthy whom we reluctantly bade farewell. Our junior year arrived and almost . immediately we began planning for the junior-senior dance. Project after 'project was devoted to the cause and 5 it was well worth the work. Highlight- 5 ing the dance was the traditional ring - r ceremony, an exciting moment. ' That was indeed a year to remem- . We had class meetings and a i big beach party and began to feel more like one group. i 1 0 l Then, before it seemed possible, l summer was over and the anticipated l year had arrived. l With this year came new responsi- bilities and new privileges.
