We'll pass through the gate and leave the building behind but there are some things we'll have with us always. We know that we shall never forget this school, its traditions, and its heritage. lt helped make us what we are and gave us memories of won- derful years. We remember that first year, that first day. Waiting to be assigned to homeroom groups. We gathered in the auditorium. The new principal, Mr. John E. Rogers told us that it was his first year too and that we were all subfreshmen together. lt made us feel a little less afraid when we rea- lized that we weren't the only ones here for the first time. That same year, Miss Olga Johanns became dean, succeeding Miss Eliza- beth Clotworthy whom we reluctantly bade farewell. Our junior year arrived and almost . immediately we began planning for the junior-senior dance. Project after 'project was devoted to the cause and 5 it was well worth the work. We had our own table in the cafeteria, our senior room, and the particularly grand free periods. At the beginning of the year, we learned that the principal who had welcomed us on that first day was leaving Charleston High. Soon we were told that Mr. John Gibbs, English teacher and friend to so many students was going too. Tearfully we bade them good-bye. It was a sad time but another to be remembered. Then Mr. Eugene C. Clark became principal and we welcomed him into the C.H.S. family. The year progressed and parts of our building received a much needed painting. Progress was made in science, lang- uages, literature, mathematics, and our business course. g There was always room for sports, however. Through all our years here, they've played an important part in our lives. We've watched our teams win and lose, always trying to remem- ber that they were our teams no mat- ter what the score. Some games were so exciting they'll never be forgotten. ln the twelfth grade, most of the s were our classmates and we especially proud ofthem. We had much to be proud of, rec- ognition for our classmates, accom- plishments of organizations, and our whole school. We've had a great deal' to live up to also. Learning, playing, and working, we grew to know each other better and found the fellowship of sharing inter- ests. This, probably is the key to what we'll remember most about Charleston High-the friends. Every year we have found new ones, students and faculty members, and with them we have shared a life. Thousands of mornings we've stood together for the National Anthem and prayed in uni- son. Hundreds of times we've lifted our voices loud and clear in the strains of our alma mater. Around these corporate experiences each indi- vidual has his own recollections. Now all that has beeh so familiar will soon find it's place in the corners of our memories. These have been wonderful years, happy and prosperous. We are sorry to see them end. Soon we'Il be on the threshold of a new life, looking forward to the years ahead, college, families of our own, and security. We'll always be very thankful and very proud to have been o part of the High School of Charles- ton. -sf-If sw 5 ' mm-Irfff 1' Nmnr-mfym-mfrwwn--fmwrvww vmfymwrf -ww,-,-W -W W, ...., ., NAME Chesta Adams Barbara Agee Charles Aldinger iWarren Almond Sodornola Altrnan Lonette Barnes Bonnie Barnett Helen Barnett Frances Bell Betty Bleaise Harry Bishop Laura Black Tommy Block Barbara Blackman Tommy Bllxard Bllly Boxtvlck Donald Bowiek Elma Bradltam Jeanette 'Brandon Jolln Branks X Mary Ann Brewer Maurice Bridgman Danna Brtnson- Fred Brown i Anne Bulst Dorothy Base H Connie Campbell: Mickey Carson f George Carter X Edgar Cohen A A -Henry Cole l'laflY-Coombs X David 1'ornmlgXXiCurtls- X Carol Donner .loyee 'Davis X X -Moybelle Deery Milton Demetre ltutllle Ellsworth X - Robert Evans - A Sidney Fares: Patty Felton- g - L Marilyn Ferrell Torn Fattors - f ' Michael Flnuoon Bill Francis - Robert Fraser g Elaine Glesln Yvonne Gllreath -X Carolyn Godwin Edward Good Franklin Green Jeanette Griffin Alfred Halsey Marliane Handley Allison Hanna X Harry Herman Patsy Hodges Philip Holcombe Anne ' Howard' Patsy Ivey X - X we XX -X X so X 5 SX .r.. 1 X-X:sX-gqg,XX5 X : K X XXstg.kXXXg - XXXNXXXX --.- X w--s,X1Xs-iw XX .r- X Xe X z-X455 I'1e'X-XXi3- 35 -Egg 'K-'-is-'QS sir ix X sX . Officers are elected each spring by the entire stu- dent body according to a procedure similar to that used in local, state, and national elections. Through the practice of democratic principles, the council furnishes students an opportunity to develop initiative and practice responsibility. This year, the group worked on projects involving the school and community, trying to solve problems which arose. Through a constitutional change, clubs were re- quired to register activities with the lnter-Club Council. Charleston High's governing body sponsored a car in the Christmas parade, cooperated with the county association in the March of Dimes Drive and other com- munity projects. Also the Spring District Rally was held a Charleston High this season and, as in previous years, C.H.S. was represented at the State Student Council Convention. Awards were made to outstanding seniors and the club which had rendered the most outstanding service to the school was recognized. Charleston High's Student Council is a member of national and state associations and with the help of and understanding advisor, Solomon Breibart, the organi- zation tries to uphold the standards of both associations. 1.5---..- l. 4 l . The Hi-Y is a voluntary club program for boys in the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades of high schools, sponsored by the Young Men's Christian Association. lt's name is a combination of the term high - school Y.M.C.A. The Hi-Y movement is interna- tional in scope, Christian in emphasis, interde- nominational in character, and democratic in practice. The Hi-Y purpose is: To create, maintain, and extend throughout the school, home, and community high standards of Christian char- acter. The four planks of the Hi-Y platform are: clean speech, clean sportsmanship, clean scholarship, and clean living. We will welcome into our membership any male student who accepts our purpose and is willing to work with us in carrying it out. We try to encourage members to band together in a definite cause calling for high scholarship, physical health, moral worth, and an unself- ish service. We do not ask: What church do you attend? or what is your nationality? Neither do we limit our membership to those who are in the B or above scholastic group- ing. ik- 3 4 ,ww n MauMLmmv4w--,,M.:..wwefv- cu 5' 2: gg KEY CLUB OFFICERS FOR THE 1955-56 TERM amy Berwick ....... .............................................................................................
