STUDENT COJNCI.. s The Student Council of the High School of Charleston is the student governing body, democratically conducted with a representative from each homeroom class. Offi- cers are elected each spring according to a procedure much like that used in local state and national elections. Meeting together, members work towards improving their school as a whole and solving the varied problems that arise. Through the practice of democratic principles, this student government offers a field where its mem- bers may develop intiative and practice enthusiastic citizenship. This past year may be remembered for many activi- ties. Problems concerning the whole school, such as changes in the Alma Mater, smoking privileges and the rights of organizations in selling supplies were success- fully solved. As in other years, the council was represented at the state convention and district rally. The group also spon- sored a car in the annual Christmas parade, maintained a lost and found department, awarded academic awards to outstanding seniors, and recognized the club which had given the most notable service to the school. Charleston High School's Student Council is a mem- ber of the National and State Association. Under the guidance of an understanding advisor, Solomon Breibart, the group makes every effort to uphold the standards of both organizations.
