HISTCRY OF THE CLASS OF 1955 Years ago we came to the High School of Charleston a frightened group of grammar school graduates awed at this institution of higher learning. As we timidly climbed the stone steps of the entrance, we gazed at the motto inscribed on the frieze, Enter to learng leave to serve, a motto which inspired and guided us through our high school career. We were happy in that we met a grand new gymnasium and an enlarged cafeteria, but not with the new requirement to take mid- term exams. We were sorry to see our principal, Mr. David Stoney, leave to become a member of the staff of the State Depart- ment of Education, but soon found another fine friend' and advisor in our new principal, Mr. John E. Rogers. Beginning our sophomore year, we felt more at home and began to take part in extra-curricular activities. We joined clubs of our choice and some of us were even nomi- nated forl positions in the student body government. Our courses became more diffi- cult and we found that we would have to devote more time to studying. ln our junior year we regretfully said good-bye to Miss Clotworthy, our dean, who accepted a position with the State Depart- ment of Education, and cheerfully welcomed Miss Johanns back to school as our new dean. Never was there so much fun as when the male teachers dressed as girls and played the varsity ir. volleyball! Not too much can be said of the game itself, but the antics made up for what was lacking professionally. Per- haps the most memorable event of our junior year was the receiving of our class rings displaying the seal of our city and the proud Bantam, symbol of our school. At last we were seniors! We had reached the pinnacle of achievement iso we thoughtl. We enjoyed privileges for which we had longed and assumed the responsibilities which this year offered to us. We were determined to make this year the best. We sold Christ- mas cards and made other efforts to raise money for our gift to the school. No year went by so fast as this one, and before we realized how little more time there was before our graduation, the juniors were entertaining us at the Junior-Senior Dance. We almost rergetted the day of graduation, for we real- ized it meant farewell to our beloved Alma Mater. We received our diplomas and were congratulated by our parents, teachers, and friends. As we left the High School of Charleston for the last time, we turned and gazed at the motto, Enter to learn, leave to serve. We had learned a great deal at the high school in addition to that which we had found in textbooks. Now we faced the responsibility of serving.
