Wofford M.A. University of S.C. --Zo l 21,7-P7 The early South Carolinian, whether a soldier, statesman or plantation owner, appreciated the arts, but in- stead of creating beauty on paper he created a living beauty with the earth. His inborn love of the land, his cul- ture, his history, even his way of life are reflected in the many beautiful gardens-show places of the South. Beginning in December, gardens open in full splendor and continue almost the entire twelve months. The early blooming camellias pass and make way for colorful azaleas. These in turn are replaced by mountain laurel, roses, iris, magnolias, and countless other blooms that combine to make one of Nature's most colorful extravagonzas. lContinued on Page SBD f7A Q OM K cl we We law., .,,, .. As we timidly climbed the stone steps of the entrance, we gazed at the motto inscribed on the frieze, Enter to learng leave to serve, a motto which inspired and guided us through our high school career. We were happy in that we met a grand new gymnasium and an enlarged cafeteria, but not with the new requirement to take mid- term exams. We were sorry to see our principal, Mr. David Stoney, leave to become a member of the staff of the State Depart- ment of Education, but soon found another fine friend' and advisor in our new principal, Mr. John E. Rogers. Beginning our sophomore year, we felt more at home and began to take part in extra-curricular activities. We joined clubs of our choice and some of us were even nomi- nated forl positions in the student body government. Our courses became more diffi- cult and we found that we would have to devote more time to studying. ln our junior year we regretfully said good-bye to Miss Clotworthy, our dean, who accepted a position with the State Depart- ment of Education, and cheerfully welcomed Miss Johanns back to school as our new dean. Never was there so much fun as when the male teachers dressed as girls and played the varsity ir. volleyball! Not too much can be said of the game itself, but the antics made up for what was lacking professionally. Per- haps the most memorable event of our junior year was the receiving of our class rings displaying the seal of our city and the proud Bantam, symbol of our school. At last we were seniors! We had reached the pinnacle of achievement iso we thoughtl. We enjoyed privileges for which we had longed and assumed the responsibilities which this year offered to us. We were determined to make this year the best. We sold Christ- mas cards and made other efforts to raise money for our gift to the school. No year went by so fast as this one, and before we realized how little more time there was before our graduation, the juniors were entertaining us at the Junior-Senior Dance. We almost rergetted the day of graduation, for we real- ized it meant farewell to our beloved Alma Mater. We received our diplomas and were congratulated by our parents, teachers, and friends. As we left the High School of Charleston for the last time, we turned and gazed at the motto, Enter to learn, leave to serve. We had learned a great deal at the high school in addition to that which we had found in textbooks. Now we faced the responsibility of serving. The C.H.S. team completed the four-mile course on Murray Boulevard in the good time of l9:O6.l, somewhat slower than the l8:5O,2 which won the event for Rivers High last year. Bishop England, which finished second to Rivers last year, pressed the Bantams all the way today to again finish second in the time of 19:49. The Bishops were trailed across the finish line by St. Andrews, 21:01. Rivers, which retired the team trophy last year by winning the event three years in a row, finished last in the field of four, requiring 23:25 to complete the course. The Bantams' Howard Moseley copped the Rudolph J. Ortmann trophy for the fastest half-mile lap, running the distance in 2:l4.8. A small crowd, estimated at less than 800 persons witnessed the event which was run under virtually cloudless skies. The Bantams took a slight edge at the outset over the Bishops and the race became a two-team affair. The CHS edge remained very slight until the eighth and final lop, when Robin Smith widened the margin for the winners. Originally, five teams were scheduled to participate in the event, but Moultrie High School of Mt. Pleasant dropped out at the last moment. Offi- cers are elected each spring according to a procedure much like that used in local state and national elections. Meeting together, members work towards improving their school as a whole and solving the varied problems that arise. Through the practice of democratic principles, this student government offers a field where its mem- bers may develop intiative and practice enthusiastic citizenship. This past year may be remembered for many activi- ties. Problems concerning the whole school, such as changes in the Alma Mater, smoking privileges and the rights of organizations in selling supplies were success- fully solved. As in other years, the council was represented at the state convention and district rally. The group also spon- sored a car in the annual Christmas parade, maintained a lost and found department, awarded academic awards to outstanding seniors, and recognized the club which had given the most notable service to the school. Charleston High School's Student Council is a mem- ber of the National and State Association. Under the guidance of an understanding advisor, Solomon Breibart, the group makes every effort to uphold the standards of both organizations. J.---wg. , THE BANTAM GOES TO PRESS Selling Ads Writing Copy Mdkillg DUMIYIY The Bantam goes to press! And the editors and staff members breathe a sigh of relief. The headaches and problems are over for a while. But The Bantam isn't all headaches and problems. Mingled with the hard work and worry are laughs 'and good times. The Bantam workers share many invaluable experiences. They laugh together over almost nothing, mourn together when the deadlines are here and the copy isn't, eat together when they are half-starved and then anything tastes good. ln the winter they freeze in the late afternoons when the furnace is off, in the summer they swelter. But every one enioys it. There's something about newspaper work that gets in your blood and you can't stop even if you haven't time or energy-you find it. The Bantam must go to press! And go to press it does. Sometimes it's a long, slow road that's hard to travel, other times it's as easy as cutting across the corner lot. But somehow, someway, the staff makes the deadline, the presses roll-the Bantam rolls off.
