One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh, but the Earth abideth torever. The sun also riseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to this place where he arose. ECCLESIASTES 1, 4-5 BmB H EflBBHHI ZENITH High Point College Volume LIV President Patton Speaks . . . As I extend greetings and best wishes to the graduating class and as you enter the decade of the 1980 ' s, I quote from Martin Luther who said, The human heart is like a millstone in a mill. When you put wheat into it, it turns and grinds the wheat to flour. If you put no wheat into it, it still grinds on but then ' tis itself it grinds against and wears away. It is our hope and our prayers that your experience at High Point College has provided the wheat for the mill of your life and that you will draw from these experiences as long as you live. Even though no one can predict what the coming decade holds for us, we do know that it will be an exciting adventure — a journey and not a destination! If you are not equipped for this journey, we have failed. You must first scale the mountain if you would view the plain — so begin now to scale your mountain. May God Bless You! February 8 brought the traditional Homecoming Dance held at the Village Green in Greensboro. Saturday, February 9 brought snow and a victory for High Point Panthers as they defeated the Catawba Indians. Due to the snow storm, the Homecoming Court was presented on February 12. Nancy Houlberg was crowned queen. Janell Welsh was first runner-up and Debbie Baunchalk received second runner-up. Homecoming Parade was held February 17 where the floats were judged. The Black Unification Movement float took first place with the Lambda Chi Alpha Float placing second. Even though the weekend was disrupted by the snow storm, the activities turned out alright and we shall long remember the 1980 Homecoming . . . The Executive Council is the coordinating body for the other branches. It presents cases of violation to the Judiciary Committee, and reviews legislation. The Legislature acts on proposals brought before them. They have Standing Committees that deal with issues of special interest. The Judicial Committee tries cases of violations of regulations, and enforces punishment if guilt is determined. The SGA is an effective, efficient body. However, it takes a strong student interest to keep it that way. Executive Council — sealed, Millie Greene, Bettie Bolen, Kathy Connelly. This slogan, which belongs to High Point College ' s newspaper, the Hi- Po, reflects the dedication of the editors and staff. The 1979-80 Hi-Po was the best that the college has seen in years. The excellence of the paper was epitomized by the honor of placing second overall in a competition sponsored by the Columbia Press Association. The award was based on the Hi-Po ' s excellence in layout, on the spot coverage, and sports. This the first press award the Hi-Po has received since 1967. Society Of Collegiate Journalists Lisa Mickey President Linda Cain Vice-President The Society for Collegiate Journalists reorganized this year. Composed of all students interested in responsible journalism, it inducted its first class of 13 full members into the national organization by President Lisa Mickey, Advisor Dr. DeLeeuw. Membership is based on work and interest in the campus publications: Hi-Po, Radio Station, Zenith, Apogee. Scott Hance Historian Leslie Davis Reporter 62 Zenith The 1979-1980 Zenith, High Point College ' s annual, has had a long, hard climb this year but has finally come out on top. Even though it was faced with the possibility of cancellation, the Zenith pulled through. The Zenith can once again be a viable student yearbook with student support and help. WWIH This is 90.5 FM, WWIH, High Point. The familiar sound of the campus radio station, WWIH, was music to everyone ' s ears. WWIH was founded two years ago as an educational, non- commercial station. It is licensed by the FCC and the DJ ' s must have an FCC Third Class License to operate from the top of Roberts Hall Tower, the location of the station. WWIH is trying to work its way up from 10 watts to 100 watts by next fall, thus increasing its transmission radius and its listening audience. Our hostess, playing house. And us — playing company. Permitted to use the fancy bathroom Next to the door that leads to the basement Subjectless conversation made us thirsty for more wine and we drank because the kitchen clock called obscenities to us. Our hostess said when she was little Her mother used to have parties. She was always afraid. She was always serving wine. Down in the basement her mother hung herself. Once. No blood left behind. Just some odd pieces of china. On eleven cam- puses across the United States, American Humanics strives to prepare selected students through their college career, their career planning and placement upon graduation. HISTORY: American Humanics at High Point College was first in- stituted in 1965. The first Resident Administrator, the late L.E. Moody, was instrumental in beginning a most suc- cessful program. In 1967, the college was visited by H. Roe Bartle, founder of American Humanics. This proved a treat for the students to have a chance to meet the Chief. L.E. Moody retired in 1973 and was replaced by James Roberts. At the same time, Harold E. Fuller was hired as a Professor of Human Relations. Terry Dunn joined the program in 1976, followed by Mr. Earnest Price, Jr. American Humanics has grown from a few in 1965 to its present sixty member organization. 1979-1980 AT A GLANCE WORKSHOPS: Recruiting Volunteers Work Scheduling Your Time Serving Urban America 4-H and Youth Development Field Trips: Winter Term, Estes Park, College Raleigh, N.C. William L. DeLeeuv Jrff Putting together a yearbook is no easy task. We ' ve faced many problems this year, but we pulled through. Thanks to everyone who pushed to get the yearbook together, Art Prillaman, Carol Rogers, Yvonne Hurley, Larry Chilton, Dr. Osborne, Dean Lowdermilk, Donna Adams ... A special thanks to Dr. DeLeeuw, who pulled the Zenith back on its way again, and to everyone who in one way or another wrote copy, laid out pages and ran errands. The Zenith is a tradition of HPC and we should never let it go. The name ' Zenith ' means ' High Point ' and I believe this is what we have achieved the High Point of working together to make this book a reality. im m I Phyllis Griffin Editor-in-Chief f — !
