Homecoming 77 Spotlighted Queen Jennifer Homecoming festivities started with the dance at the Holiday Inn— Celebrity Ball providing the music Friday night. Saturday came the judging of floats, Phi Mu and Kappa Delta Taking the honors, alumni get to-gethers and the usual excitement. Later that evening, Randy Bledsoe, the announcer for the evening introduced each or the twenty girls. Martha Campbell became 2nd runner-up, Cindy Gates was elected 1st runner- up; as a hush fell over the crowd, Jennifer Stone began her reign as 1977 Homecoming Queen. First and foremost the department wishes to create an understanding and ap- preciation of the economic system and business community. It also prepares stu- dents to enter the business world, to teach, or enter the graduate schools for further ed- ucation. This year an accounting major was added to the department. Now students will be able to receive a Bachelor of Science De- gree in Accounting. The department invites students of any major to participate in the student activity of business, SAM, the Society for Advancement of Management. Mr. Nelson ( Left ) takes time to strike a pose for the photographer. 69 Education Department Provides Experience For Future Jobs I The Education Department pro- vides majors for teachers in the Early Childhood and Inter- mediate Education programs. In addition, certificates of education for secondary schools may be earned. The Tutorial Program at HPC, under the direction of the Edu- cation Department provides special help for area children. VITAMINS VISUALIZING EQUATIONS 70 Creeley Featured At Poetry Festival Mrs. Rawley greets students at orientation. Coordinating the Fall Poetry Festival was one of the under- takings of the English Depart- ment this year. Poet Robert Creeley was featured and spoke at conferences and workshops. The English Department offers courses in all literary genre, thus enabling students to gain an insight into many cultures. ' in Nurture strength of : :: t: to shield you in sudden misfortune. ■■ J? pi IIUP 91 This year the Panther Soccer team set out to improve an 8-4-1 record that saw them lose to Pfeiffer in the first round of the district playoffs. This year ' s team had a tough schedule and did rather well. The Panthers opened up the year hosting the First Annual High Point Soccer Classic. The team lost to a good U.N. C. -Chapel Hill club but came back strong to win the consolation finals over David- son. During the year the Panthers also beat N.C.A.A. schools, U.N.C. Charlotte and N.C. State by the scores of 2-0 and 1-0 respectively. Second year coach Ken Chartier had a good recruiting year. Some of the top recruits were Ronnie Clendinin from Greensboro and Walter Rowe from Maryland, who both earned starting roles as freshmen. Also counted on were transfer Paul Goehle from Smithtown, N.Y. along with the consistent play of returning starters Jeff Potter, Doug Challenger, Greg Goehle and goal-keeper Joe Rams- botham. Captain Gary Downing, out with a foot injury at the beginning of the sea- son, came on strong in the last half of the season to play well at the fullback position. ' We ' re number one! ' - ■ . Run . . . x - . 1 . - -. • ' ' The 1976 season was a very good one for the HPC cross-country team. The team this year participated in a number of invitational meets such as the West Georgia Invitational, the Pembroke Invitational, and the Wake Forest Invitational. The team was led this year by juniors, Mark Hamlett and Perry Macheras, along with support from Chip Wilson, a senior, and Randy Lazelere, a sophomore. During the regular sea- son, the Panthers compiled an im- pressive record with wins over such schools as Wake Forest, Georgia State, Davidson, and Barry College. . This year, as usual, Coach Bob Davidson has molded HPC cross- country into a team that is rec- ognized as one of the very top teams in this area. Cross-country team gets psyched before the meet. This year the Panther Hockey Team gained more depth than last year with the addition of some good freshmen and transfers. Sandy Stusnick, a transfer from New Jersey, was an outstanding newcomer as was Alyson Wilk, a freshman from East Long Meadow, Mass., who was also the leading scorer. Also helping the team this year, as in previous years, was the excellent play of goal-keeper Sharon Glover. In the first nine games, she had only nine goals scored against her, along with three shutout games and a countless number of saves. This year also brought on a move to another division of play. The Panthers competed in the AIAW division instead of Deep South. The caliber of play in this division was stronger than that of Deep South and the team gained more experience against top quality teams. Finally A Rest 97 Volleyballers — Serve It, Set It, Spike It . . . The High Point College Volleyball Team domin- ated the Carolina ' s Conference this year just as they did last year. Coach Jennifer Alley did some fine recruiting and made this year ' s team more powerful in all positions. In the Carolina ' s Conference tournament held here at HPC, the mighty Panthers ran into little difficulty in re- peating as conference champions. In their first match of the tournament, the girls breezed by Catawba yielding only seven points. They then topped Elon and won the championship by beating Guilford 15-5, 15-6. Marie Riley, a freshman from New York, was voted the most valuable player in the tournament. Joining her on the All- Tournament team from HPC were Wanda Wilson, Wanda Walton, and Karen Christofferson. Con- gratulations girls on a very outstanding season! ! ! Girl Panthers get ready for the beginning of the game. 99 Panther Basketball— A Whole New Team The men ' s basketball team experienced an up and down season as they finished with an overall record of 12-14. With seven players of the twelve-man squad being freshmen, the Panthers had to rely on the leadership of graduating seniors Pearlee Shaw and Ray Coble. Pearlee Shaw capped his last season with a sensational performance of 29 points and 9 rebounds against Catawba in the semi-finals of the Carolinas Conference Tournament. His play earned him a birth on the all tournament team. Lady Panthers Do It Again . . . For the second consecutive year the talent-laden Lady Panthers have finished the regular season undefeated and went on to capture the Conference and State Division II Tournaments. In winning the NCAIAW Division II Championship, which was palyed here in Alumni Gym, the Lady Panthers defeated Wake Forest University 121-58, Mars Hill 91-76, and Western CArolina 81-63. Outstanding performances were turned in by Gracie Simmons and Ethel White as they were named to the all tournament team. Wanda Wilson and Dawn Allred were named to the All-Division II team along with Simmons and White. Over the season, the Lady Panthers finished with a record of 6-0 in the conference, 12-0 in Division II play, and 21-0 in overall competition. The undefeated record earned the Lady Panthers a first round bye in the conference tournament. They then went on to defeat Pembroke 102-33 in the semi- finals and Elon 88-60 in the finals. Wanda Wilson was named as the most valuable player and earned a spot on the all conference team along with Dawn Allred, Gracie Simmons, and Ethel White. Through its elected officers and various committees it becomes a working laboratory experience in the methods used most commonly to administer the nation ' s great volunteer youth agencies. To offer college level preparation for students interested in careers with America ' s youth serv- ing agencies is the purpose of the American Humanics Youth Agency Leadership Program. Some of the agencies offering professional careers in this field are the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, YMCA, YWCA, Campfire, Boys ' Club and Girls ' Club. This year ' s theme was presented at the Fall Retreat held at Roaring Gap. The theme, Within My Power served well throughout the school year. Other activities for the year included a series of workshops and career seminars, social events and field trips to youth agencies. This year brought us our new Resident Administrator, Mr. Terry Dunn, for American Humanics. It also will unfortunately be Dr. Fuller ' s last as head of the department. We hate to see him go for he has been a very special person to us all. We thank him for all he has done. We were happy to meet and get to know our new director, Dr. James Elson. We feel that he is doing a fine job with both groups. Our accompa- nient on piano, Janet Hinkle, and our guitar accompanient, Eddie Hood, work well with the groups. The choir have sung at two Christmas concerts on campus. More than this, Fellowship Teams means what the name implies. It is a fellowship of fellow strugglers and seekers who join together to discover new meaning for their lives in a community of faith. Teams meet on Thursday nights in each semester and plan workshops which will be helpful to all involved. The Day Student ' s Organization, one of the most recently formed groups on the HPC campus, extends membership to any college student who does not live on the campus. Day Students have organized themselves to work out problems which are specific to them alone, such as the parking problem. Also, the organization has developed plans for making all day students more aware of campus activities and for urging them to participate in these events. It provides better representation in the best interest of an often unheard group of students. 125 Spanish Club Makes Its Debut All students who study Spanish at HPC, regardless of level and personal accomplishment, are eligible to become members of the Spanish Club. The Society for the Advancement of Management, better known as SAM, is a campus club designed to help students gain insight to the practical world of day to day business activities. The HPC chapter of SAM is one of 200 such clubs chartered in leading colleges and universities in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and other countries. Membership to the HPC chapter is open to all students regardless of their major. Being a member of SAM means involvement in such activities as tours, speakers, fund raising events, and socials. During the year SAM members toured the Schlitz Brewing Plant in Winston-Salem, Greensboro Regional Airport Control Tower in Greensboro, Wachovia Band and Trust in High Point, and the Federal Reserve Bank in Charlotte. During this college year of 1976- 77, the Hi-Po made strides to fullfill those purposes. First of all, publication dates were changed to Wednesday in order to give the staff more time to prepare articles and also to make the paper more accessable to those students who go home on weekends. Secondly, through our multi talented staff, the Hi-Po pro- vided many new features such as Bummer, editorial cartoons, photography layouts, theatre arts column, and other editorial columns.
