ORIENTATION 75 YEAR-IN REVIEW Tuesday September 23 Jack Thomas appeared on stage in a white suit and a cloud of cigar smoke portraying Mark Twain. Thomas read selections from one of Twain ' s most famous stories HUCKLEBERRY FINN. KRESKIN The Amazing Kreskin made his second appearance on the High Point College campus, October 1. Students were once again fascinated by the feats he performed during the show. The Tower Players presented a comedy, Born Yesterday October 30. 31 and Nov. 1 , ' 75 lor Parent ' s Weekend along with other activities that were planned lor Parent ' s Weekend. The Halloween Carnival was a big Success and was enioyed by young and old. The American Revolution was many conflicts in one. A movement of a subject people for independence, it was the first of the great anti-colonial struggles. Both tragic and heroic, it was also a cival war that pitted brother against brother and a war against monarchy that gave birth to a republic. At once more moderate, more successful, and more enduring than other revolutions before and since it promised fulfillment of man ' s eternal dream of self government within a democratic society. Actually the revolution began well before the Second Continental Congress declared the new nation independent. It began before the patriot minutemen exchanged gunfire with redcoats on the Lexington green. Indeed, as John Adams observed, it began in the minds and hearts of the people even before hostilities developed. In his view, the radical change in the hearts, principles, options, sentiments, and affections of the people, was the real American Revolution. What brought this radical change in the hearts and minds of the people who only a decade ago thought themselves to be patriotic and loyal citizens of the King? To many contemp- oraries, the quarrel began over tea and taxes, over oppressive imperial regulations and the British insistence on taxation without representation. 1776 15 But in fact the roots of the struggle were deeply fixed in the ideas of John Locke, in the optimism of the Enlightenment, in the faith of the humane and liberal eighteenth-century thinkers of the Atlantic community who dared to believe that freedom was man ' s natural condition. Richard Henry Lee spoke for a Nation when he resolved that these United Colonies are, and of light ought to be free and independent States. But Thomas Jefferson in his immortal Declaration, spoke for the ages when he proclaimed it self-evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by men Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that . . . Governments are instituted among men. deriving then |ust powers, from the consent of the governed. These stirring words, scarcely more than abstractions in 1 776. became the foundation upon which a newly independent people would erect a free and democratic state. These words helped sustain pati iot soldiers at Breeds Hill, Valley Forge and Yoi ktown, through eight long and bloody years of struggle with England. They helped sustain the Founding Fathers who gathered in Philadelphia in 1887 to form a more perfect union. They sustained Washington as he fixed the nation ' s course and Lincoln as he labored to keep it intact. They sustained Wilson, Roosevelt, and Truman, in crisis and triumph, in doleful challenge and creative response. And today, at the bicentennium of our nation ' s birth, they sustain us still as we remember the meaning of our Revolution and rededicate oui minds and Hearts to its enduring principles. But their bid for a ninth straight District 26 championship was upset by J.C. Smith in the district championship meet held here at High Point. They finished 9-1, one of their finest years ever. Top performers were freshmen Ron Dement and Randy Lazelere who finished in the top ten in the district and Dennis Covahey who had been the top runner until an injury in the mid-season sidelined him. Others that contributed to their winning effort were Perry Macheras, Dave Painter, John Hardison, Chip Wilson, and Dave Hearn. That ' s a tough season to top. But the mighty Panther soccer team set out to do just that. Under the reigns of first year head Coach Ken Chartier, they fared rather well. Although they started out the first half of the season with a 3-2-1 record, came on strong to win five in a row only to have hopes of a second consecutive conference championship spoiled by Guilford College in the season finale. With no less than nine letter winners from last years squad returning there was optimism in the Panther camp. Added to them two freshmen All-Starters and two All-State college transfers and you have your team. Sophomore forwards Germaine McAuley, the teams leading scorer, and Dee Ann Clapp returned up front with 6 ' 1 center Lynn Massi. In addition to those three Wanda Wilson, a two year starter at powerful Elon College, added scoring, re- bounding and defense to the front court while Gracie Simmons saw a lot of action. Freshmen Denise Washington and Jody Westmoreland added depth to the front line. Coach Alley took transfer Dawn Allred from North Carolina and put her to work on ballhandling and for ex- perience added to the backcourt while freshmen Ethel White from Greensboro added speed and quickness. Returnees also from last year include Wendee Saintsing, Debbie Madden, Debbie Johnson, Wilma Moran, each of whom started at some time last season. Transfer Robyn Cooper and freshman Sharon Wall added depth to the backcourt. With five men returning who were conference or district cham- pionships and several promising newcomers, the Panthers seemed destined to better last years record. The running events should prove to be very strong this year. Newcomers Dennis West and Larry Pass who have been timed at 9.7 and 9.5 respectively should combine with returning Pearly Shaw and freshman Kevin Gartner for an outstanding 440 relay team. The mile and three mile events should be well run by cross country runners Chip Wilson, Dennis Covahey, Ron Dement, and Randy Larzelere while the 880 will be run by Kevin Sullivan and Larry Potter. Returning will be an experience pitching staff in Dan England (12-2) and Billy Sorrell (10-3) and Delvin Idol (7-0). Along with this talent will be Freshman Jeff Driscole who could add depth in that department. Along with these performers return a lot of players who will add depth and leadership to this team. Poetry Publication and Awi American Collegiate Publi- cations has announced it is now accepting applications for the second annual volume of Who ' s Who In Poetry In American Colleges and Uni- versities. This is the only non-vanity poetry publication for students which is pub- lished in direct cooperation with collegiate institutions. This publishing program has been created to give noteworthy student poets recognition. Fellowship Teams minister lo the needs of church youth groups. A Team of five or six students plans a weekend retreat for a congregational youth group. Fellowship Teams meet each Thursday night in the Campus Center. Workshops provide fun as well as learning experiences. Team members learn to have a good time while planning exciting and successful retreats. Through its elected officers and various committees it becomes a working laboratory experience in the methods used most commonly to administer the nations great volunteer youth agencies. It also serves well in fostering a common spirit of service and departmental fellowship, and as a vehicle for presenting career directed workshops and seminars. To offer college level preparation for students interested in careers with America ' s youth serving agencies is the purpose of the American Humanics Youth Agency Leadership Program. Some of the agencies offering professional careers in this field are the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, YMCA, YWCA, Campfire, Boys ' Clubs and Girls ' Clubs. This year ' s theme was presented at the Fall Retreat held at Roaring Gap. The theme If I Don ' t, Who Will served well throughout the school year. Other activities for the year included a series of workshops and career seminars, social events and field trips to youth agencies or events. This year we celebrated our tenth year as American Humanics Student Association at H igh Point College. The Trustees and Directors of American Humanics, Inc. held their quarterly meeting here in recognition of our ten years.
