' ■:- Oftm.  u. - 36 VELC0ME5 YDl ORIENTATION ' 72 directions, directions. . long regis- tration lines a pause for refreshments unloading . . . a talent show by the orientation committee a welcome from everyone . . 2 SZJKfr UNI Those horrible placement tests the agony and frustration of that first academic registration the puzzled expressions of both faculty and students an exhausted orientation commit- tee but most important, a new group of Purple Panthers 38 39 WM The Year in Review a visit by the bloodmobile HPC students sharing and caring Greek serenades a halloween carnival sponsored by the Student Union that proved to be a great success and was en|oyed by all HPC students and faculty and the High Point city residents who attended .11 Mr. Joe Sorrentino. one-time gang lead- er, now author, attorney, and professor of law spoke about his life and work Dr. Darwin Turner spoke about the Harlem Renaissance in literature Dr. Eugene Genovese. Professor of History at Rochester University, spoke about Southern Paternalism as seen from the Quarters Interesting speakers captivated HPC audiences Student Union coffee houses were held often to entertain students the Straw Ballot held by the History and Political Science Department was a great success Students passed several constitutional amendments at a special SGA election 43 Tis the Season . . . The Christmas season at H.P.C brought a Student Union sponsored Christmas party complete with carols and Santa Claus himself . . Virgil Yow. who served for nearly thirty years as head basketball coach of the Panthers, was honored prior to the Home- coming game. As a result of this reorganization, the Student Union will be able to offer more varied and interesting types programming for 1973-74. Working for the benefit of all HPC students, the Student Union operates with a governing board which welcomes new ideas and suggestions from students thus insuring that the type of program- ming offered will reflect the interests and needs of the campus community. Stu- dents were able to voice their opinions and suggestions at weekly meetings. The new campus center has meant a totally new dimension in being able to provide entertainment for the HPC cam pus Coffee-houses, movies, dances, speakers, lecturers, and concerts were only a part of the Student Union activ- ities held during the 1972-73 year. District 26 Champions 11 18 72 N.A.I. A. Nationals — 12 2 72 Lexington Va. 10.000M COUNTRY PERSPECTIVE Under the very able coaching of N.A.I. A. District 26 Coach of the Year. Bob Davidson, the 1972 Cross Country team concluded another successful season, once again capturing the District 26 crown. Even though the team was plagued with injuries for most of the season, the team was able to forge ahead and defeat many of the teams which to any other squad would have meant defeat. Cap- tained by Lloyd Davis and Mike Turmula. the Panthers began their season with a loss to Wake Forest, but bounded back with wins over Campbell and Guilford. The only team which could really defeat High Point, Pembroke, was not even given an easy win. With each meeting of the two powers in the area, HPC edged closer and closer to the very top. The regular season closed with a sixth place finish at the N.C. State Meet, a first place finish at the District Meet, and a second place at the 1st Annual Area Meet. The N A LA. Nationals would be the end of the sea- son for two team members. Davis and Turmula. Davis was prevented from competing by illness, but Turmula did But his hopes of All American status were crushed when his best time ever failed to place him high enough in the rankings to qualify in a very fast field. Next year can be nothing but even better with the return of the team intact except Davis. From the looks of things. High Point College could very easily be the power to reckon with for many years to come SOCCER 72 David Hausmann A PERSPECTIVE Beginning the second year of intercollegiate compe- tition, the HPC soccer team looked over the prospects of a long and perhaps hard trail to regain the prowess High Point College possessed many years ago when it first fielded a soccer team only to see it disband The players on the team realized their objectives and capabilities and proceeded to mold a squad of which High Point could be proud Under the coaching of Ray Alley, the season began with rigorous practices, back breaking drills and constant repetition The results at first were shakey. but the mistakes and lack of team work which brought HPC to the pages of Sports Illustrated as the team which lost a college soccer match by the greatest score ever were gone The team looked upon their defeats as part of the necessary learning process, analyzed these defeats and proceeded to rectify their mistakes By the middle of the season, the team looked like a strong united body which gave commers a fight instead of an easy victory With the experience of this season, one can rest assured that the ' 73 season will see a strong and more mature soccer team, one which will be able to cast off the label as HPC ' s loosmest team, and take its rightful place with all the teams of which High Point College is perennially proud Ed Stafford 9-: Frank Vails - ' V Craig Habicht ' - ■ w . . Miss Jennifer Alley, and many new players, the team had to rebuild itself This year, the team was invited to the Winthrop Hockey Sports Day in which six other schools participated At the conclusion of the season. High Point went to the Deep South Hockey Tournament at UNC-G 13 schools along with HPC competed High Point ' s record at the Deep South was 1-1-1- Sue Stevenson was chosen for the Deep South Team which traveled to Richmond with the chance to go to the Na- tionals This year was an unique experience, and the girls returning anticipate an extra good season next year Debbie Leonard 193 BALL GO PERSPECTIVE On February 22. the High Point College family said goodbye to two senior members of the Basket- ball team who will never again wear the panther uniform on the home court. Tubby Smith and Carl- vin Steed On one wall of Alumni Gymnasium was a banner. With a Tear and a Cheer . . This can very easily be the story of 1972-73 for High Point Basketball The season began with a big surprise, a new Head Coach. Jerry Steele, who had been Athletic Director Steele became Coach very near the beginning of the season and had to get adjusted to the team From the start, the Panthers were cursed with injuries of the starting veterans which forced some of the newcomers into starting roles much sooner than normally would occur The loss of Gregg Bennett for almost the entire season because of reoccuring knee trouble was a very unfortunate and serious loss Many of the squad had limited experience playing with their teammates to say nothing of the fact that many were freshmen. This caused some of the team work to suffer on the court as it took a while for the team to begin working as one unit; however, any team with as much going against them would be expected to mentally fold. T he Panthers did not fold. They took their lumps and tried to make the proper adjustments At times this in itself was enough. In all candor, next year will be better The only thing we lack this year was experience.
