It ' s Autumn In . - Our President MESSAGE TO CLASS OF 1962 Almost overnight you have been transformed from students to alumni! We are proud of you. You begin your careers in a magnificent year, one abounding with op- portunities wherever you may go and however you may serve. Let me take this moment to re- mind you that the world needs what you have to offer. At no time in history have such frontiers ex- isted, nor has there been greater need for the knowledge, courage, and devotion of educated Christians as today. As you leave our campus we cant help hut reflect and hope. We hope that we offered you the right learning experiences and that you took advantage of as many opportunities for learning as possible. We hope that you profited from both your in-class and out-of-class experiences. We hope that you did more than learn facts, dates, and places— but instead have come to possess new knowledge and skills and attitudes that not only make you a better person, but better equipped to make your contribution to a world who desperately needs yon. God bless you and keep you. ■J Jf Z, De ans TO THE CLASS OF 1962: The world today needs men and women who have learned to think for themselves. The future of democracy is dependent upon the qualities of leadership not only in the political area but in personal relations. My greatest hope is that you have laid the foundations for these qualities here at High Point College. The faculty and administration have tried to create an atmosphere in class and on the campus which fosters student participation and social growth. As your Dean, I am proud of the many ad- vancements you students have made these four years. If you carry through into your careers and lives the same enthusiasm and understanding of the problems of others that you have shown here, you will live useful lives and make a contribution to society from which all your associates may benefit. Good luck and God bless you all. Ah{ [friAAxid DEAN OF THE COLLEGE TO THE CLASS OF 1962: May I take this opportunity to express my great appreciation for the cooperation and spirit of fair play that you have shown through the years at High Point College. May you continue to use the growth you have attained here as you make your contribution in your chosen field. May life give to you all the blessings that you can assimi- late into your life. We pay tribute to With News Commentator Paul Harvey. Behind the scenes of each campus activity are vitally essential people who are seldom brought forward for just recognition. Because the Zenith Staff is well aware of this fact, we have chosen to dedicate this space to one of these peo- ple, thereby showing to some small degree our appreciation. The person we have chosen is friendly, charming, and understanding, and is never too busy to show interest in our campus ac- tivities, organizations, and in individual students. For her interest in our student body, for her will- ingness to serve, for the many reasons which words are powerless to express fully, we, with love, respect and gratitude, acknowledge . . . New? Better? Different? Daring? We, the staff, feel that each of these words are appro- priate; together, thev give a picture of this vear ' s HI-PO. The HI-PO is new, new from the staff to the printer. The HI-PO is better. We have better pic- tures, better articles, better and more up-to-date coverage. The HI-PO is different. We have a regular column on the front page, rotating edi- torials, and eye-catching fraternity page. The HI- PO is daring. The editorial policy is to print the truth, and some of our articles have been contro- versial. We feel that this year ' s HI-PO, being new, better, different, and daring, has caused more campus interest and has created a more informed campus. We feel that we have made many improve- ments, but many more are left to be made. It is our hope that our bi-monthly newspaper will grow into a weekly publication. Our hope rests with you-you, the ' 1962-63 HI-PO staff. 42 HOWARD BARNES Layout Editor i STAFF MR. HORMACHEA Adviser EDITORIAL BOARD S G A Executive LEN LEWIN President BOB CLARK Vice-President The Student Government Association of High Point College strives earn- estly to carry out its purpose, that be- ing to develop student honor and self- control, to encourage right ideals and promote personal responsibility, and to foster the principles of self-government. ' It is the immediate duty of the Executive Council to employ this purpose as a gov- erning process by acting as a working arm and a co-ordinator of the other branches of the S.G.A. The Student Government has as its goal this year to become an ef- ficient organization in practice and not in theory. It sought to become a governing body and not merely a sponsor of activi- ties, even though this part of the program did not cease. The year began with high hopes and ambitions and ended with many accomplishments, not only on the part of the Executive Council, but on the part of the entire student body. Everyone gained a greater sense of unity and loyalty to the school they have come to love. The S.G.A. officers wish the Student Government success in the vears to come. ■1 SANDRA HOOKS Secretary JERRY KYLE Treasurer If Jud lciary Judiciary Representatives The Verdict Is Yours The Judiciary Council, one of the three branches of the Student Government, is the final authority on all judicial matters. It has the responsibility of trying cases of infraction of S.G.A. laws, and determining and enforcing punishment for these infrac- tions. However, all persons accused of of- fenses are innocent until proven guilty and the burden of proof falls upon the prosecution. This year the Judiciary Coun- cil, with Dan Earnhardt as Chief Justice, has proven itself to be a stern and just court. DAN EARNHARDT, Chief Justice 45 House of Representatives ALLEN SIIARPE Speaker of the House The House of Representatives is one of the two houses that compose the legislative hody of the Student Government Association. Rep- resentation to the House is based propor- tionately on the membership of each class and honafide organization at High Point Col- lege. Unless a special called meeting is deemed necessary, the House convenes on the first and third Thursday of each month to transact any legislation concerning the Student Government Association. In impor- tant legislation this year, the House has passed both the Unicameral System and a revised edition of the Honor Code. Through competent representation, the House is able to initiate important legislation and fulfill a dire need of student participation in school government as well as to provide practical experience in governmental procedure. OPTIC LRS: Dave Burgess, Linda Wood, Francis Dail, and John Ward. Senate The Senate of the Student Government As- sociation is one of the houses of Student Leg- islature, composed of three members from each of the four classes of the college. The Senators are elected hy vote of the classes, and serve for the entire school year. The Vice- President of the Student Government serves as Speaker of the Senate, and is responsible for encouraging activity in the Senate and com- munication of legislation from the Senators to the members of the classes. This year the Sen- ate has dealt with many vital problems on the campus, and has passed legislation concerning every area of campus endeavor, from academic standards to specific social situations. The Sen- ate has been contributed to the enlargement of participation by students in important extra- curricular functions. BOB CLARKE Speaker of the Senate Will the meeting please come to order? 17 Women ' s Dormitories The Women ' s Dormitory Council serves as a mediator be- tween the women residents and the Student Government Asso- ciation. This year the Council adopted a new and more effective sign out system. There was a successful experiment with a no- lights out program for upper classmen. Greatly aided by the guidance and understanding of Debbie, Mrs. Bennett, and Mrs. Warren, the dormitory has had a verv successful year. This is done through close relationship with the Student Gov- ernment and the administration. Certain aspects of freshman orientation are handled by the officers of the Men ' s Dormitory Council. We be- lieve that education does not stop in the classroom; therefore we try to foster group living and an educational experience. The dormitory council has been very fortunate this year in working with the new resident mother, Mrs. McMeekin Kerr. She has been very successful in mak- ing dormitory life more enjoyable and rewarding. 1 1 1 • • • DON CASHION ' Leader of the Clan . Westminster meets twice a month at the home of its sponsors, Mr. and Mrs. McKinny. Meetings feature inspiring and enlightening pro- grams and discussions of importance to Christian stu- dents. Programs are followed by periods of fellowship. Students of all denominations are welcome to attend the meetings and to take part in the activities of the fellowship. The officers are Annette Young, president; Jane Smith, vice-president; Mary Lew Smith, secretary; Judy Longwith, SGA Representative; Milbrey Belaud, devo- tions chairman. Kappa Chi Fellowship A K( )x e E P A n E ■i A Kappa Chi is an organization composed of all men students who are planning to enter or who are inter- ested in Christian vocations. These are our guiding principles as sisters in the service of Cod. Highlights of our year were the Pledge Program, which gave our or- ganization 29 new sisters. The outstanding pledge of the pledge class, Carol Ceist, was recognized at the initiation at M on then Methodist Church. Many of the girls attended our Fall Retreat at Millhrook, the home of Mrs. Ed Millis. Our speaker at the Retreat was Mr. Grady Whicker. Again this year Alpha Delta Theta held weekly dorm devotions. Another year is uear its end, but we are sure it will always have a special meaning to us who are sisters in the serv- ice of God. The purpose of this organization is two- fold: to strengthen the youth program in local churches and to lead youth in more abundant Christian living; to enable HPC students to gain experience in youth work of the church. Our teams strive to develop leadership among the youth with whom we work, to help the youth groups to help themselves, to present Christianity on its highest levels for all areas of life— through programs of worship, sing- ing, guidance in long-range and unit planning, recreation, and service projects. 1960-62 Planning Committee Left to right: Carrie Whitehurst, Theron Farmer, Carrie Myrick, and Shirley McDaniel. Anyone who is interested in the theater, whether it be act- ing, lighting, stage work, or advertising and who has taken part in any of the phases of play production in any of the year ' s work is a member of the Tower Players. Having an impressive background of name shows such as Death of a Salesman, Macbeth, ' ' The Glass Menagerie, Guys and Dolls, Teahouse of the August Moon, and Girl   Crazy, the Players staged the memorable works to be seen on the following pages, which were given in the spring and fall semesters of 1961. Thelma Mitchell was the instigator of this idea and with the help of Mr. Raiford Porter, the Students Art League was formed. A constitution was written and stated the purpose of this club is, to create for the students of High Point College a greater enjoyment, appreciation, and understand- ing of the world of art. Since last spring the Students Art League has grown and now includes twenty members. On our calendar of events this year were scheduled movies, a demonstration, and a show. In November we sponsored a display of paintings and prints by Edwin Shewmake for the College in the foyer of Memorial Audi- torium. To raise money we sponsored a Mr. Ugly contest. Then in December we held an art sale of the members ' work. We have enjoyed our first year as a new club and already have many plans for the future. I W f l Basketball The average sports fan loves to attend athletic events and cheer his favorite team to victory, which is a natural thing. But lets stop and think a minute and take a look at what actually goes into the planning for a full season and each individual game. The picture above is a typical afternoon spent in Alumni Gymnasium by the Purple Panthers. But this photo could have very well been taken over the Thanksgiving holidays while the average student is home enjoying all the turkey and trimmings, or dur- ing the Christmas holidays when everyone is enjoy- ing the cheer of the holiday season — everyone except our basketball players, that is. The truth of the matter is that the High Point College basketball player is not an average student. He has a job to do and a reputation to uphold even if this means spending the various holidays throughout the year in preparation for the season or the next game on schedule. Practice sessions in basketball, as in any sport, are hard work. Many hours of mental and physical strain are put into these daily sessions. Opponents ' key players are discussed, misunderstandings are settled, and the building of unity and spirit are just a few things accomplished in practice. If certain phases of the game aren ' t being plaved well, the team will work extra hard at this fallback, and consequently spend the entire practice smooth- ing it out. A generalized yearly practice schedule, which the Panthers follow from the beginning of October un- til the first of March looks something like this. Be- ginning the first three to four weeks a strict con- ditioning program is kept. Running is the best way to get in shape to play basketball, and the Panthers do their share in the early season workouts. As the first of November rolls around, the boys appear to be in pretty good shape and start setting up their offensive style of play. Finally, as the weather begins to chill and the freshmen begin to adjust to college life, December is here, as is the first basket- ball game. The pre-season preparations are over, and the time has come for the Panthers to begin play in the rough Carolina ' s Conference. During the actual season, the coaches scout the various opponents, and the practices are now dedi- cated to studying the next opponent in full detail. Key men are sighted, and the offensive and de- fensive play of the opponents is discussed. The Panthers will set a man-to-man defense and work against the opponents ' offensive pattern so that they will get a good idea of what to expect. If the opponent uses a zone defense, the cagers work against the zone and find out where the weak spots are and from where their best shots come. Practice, if handled in the correct manner, can be the most beneficial phase of preparation for a basketball team. In concluding, let ' s examine the above picture in somewhat greater detail. As seen, intense discus- sion and concentration is taking place and the ex- ploits of hard work and victory can be noticed. The average student couldn ' t possibly go through such a vigorous activity program, but for our bas- ketball players it is a daily routine. So boy, you had better listen, I kind of believe that what Coach Yow is explaining is for your bene- fit as well as for the team. 128 Basketball From the dirty-faced little boy in the street to the dignity of manhood, we find the sturdy creatures called athletes. These strong-willed young men come in assorted heights, weights, colors, and religious beliefs, bul all possess the same creed: to play every minute of every game to the best of their ability. Athletes are found everywhere— dribb- around, jumping over, sliding in or driving in through their opponent. Teammates rib them, stud- ents cheer them, coaches criticize them, and mothers worry about them. Athletes are truly un- usual people. They are often criticized and even sometimes ridiculed and humiliated, but they never give up. They don ' t know the meaning of such a word. They may not be All Americans, but they are a symbol of the American way. They are not judged for their race, religion, social position, or financial status, but by the way they sacrifice in- dividual glory for the good of the team. They are hard-working, untiring, determined, and often stub- born people. They are athletes . . . they are our tram. COACH VIRGIL VOW .a. • n m : 1 • 1 s IJ s? ASSISTANT COACH FRANK HASSELL ??? Tournament As the Panthers journeyed to Lexington to par- ticipate in the annual Carolina Conference Tourna- ment, all concerned wondered if they could repeat their wonderous feat of a year ago. The cagers, with a 12-11 record for the season and seated fifth in the tournament, drew top seated Lenoir Rhyne as their first game. Emotions were mixed and a feeling of unsureness filled the air. However, with Bear Meat chanting throughout the stands, High Point proceeded to trounce their biggest rival. 91- 77, and advance to the semifinals against E Ion ' s Christians. Next, Elon fell to the troops , 80-73, and the fired-up cagers seemed to be on their way to another conference title. Meanwhile, the big Cats from the mountains at Western Carolina were breezing throu gh their competition bracket and had gained the final game. They had won the title in 1959, had finished this season in .second place, and earned the right to meet our Panthers for the championship. The stage was set and the gymnasium filled to capacity as the contest began. The hard fought first half ended with the Catamounts claiming a two point advantage. Western Carolina, possessors of great size and speed, pulled away from the younger Panthers in the second half and won the high spirited championship affair, 69-58. The victors had played well. Jug received the M.V.P. trophy as he once again led the tournament in scoring and rebound- ing. Congratulations are in order to all the players for an exciting season. Its all over for another season. . . . wait until next vear. and we got itl Problems? 134 Simplicity won another trophy for the Alpha Gams. Homecoming . . . An unusually sunny day set the stage for one of HPC ' s most memorable Home- comings. The exciting day began at dawn as sleepy Creeks invaded the front lawn with their clever displays. Alumni then began appearing seemingly from nowhere-well- dressed, ooing over the so many changes , smiling, reliving their own col- lege days. The students attended classes as usual, but spirits were high as weary bodies decorated for the dance, rested before the game, and dressed for the big date. The crowning of Mary Lou Troutman as the queen, the victory over Catawba, and a lovely dance climaxed a perfect Homecoming. Pika says, Flush that Injun. Absolute Nothing! except how many games a team has lost compared to how many they ' ve won. It doesn ' t give a true picture of the sweat, hard work, and desire that has been put forth in each game, whether win or lose. This final recording of the team ' s season fails to show the two out bottom of the ninth loses, the extra inning defeats, or the heart breaking 1-0 loss where a pi teller has hurled a beautiful game only to lose by such a discourag- ing margin. No, the won-lost r ecord doesn ' t really show the basic mechanics and seasonal output of a team in its truest sense. Here at High Point College our baseball team in recent campaigns has never really had an im- pressive won-lost record, and anyone hasing the team on this fact has sorely missed the boat. These persons haven ' t obtained a true indication of the team ' s overall play throughout the course of the season. From the beginning games in the cool March air to the season finals in May ' s warm sun, the Panther nine has always exhibited hustle, deter- mination, and an honest desire to win. This season has been no exception as the diamond men have played hard and well, and should certainly be looked upon as a credit to our college. This year ' s club practiced diligently and put forth an honest effort and certainly have given us an exciting season. With each passing year High Point ' s baseball teams are improving, and through the steady play this year of Ray Fraley, Sam White, Charlie Willard, Don Cashion, David Kemp, Larry Nolan, Roy Greenwood, Joe Keith, Harold Moose, and the Grant twins, this year is no exception. Many of these same players will return again next year, and if the in- eoming freshmen prospects produce, the Panthers will certainly be a team to reckon with in the future. Now that it is over, it seems unreal. I have learned that to be editor of a yearbook one has to be a mathematician, a copywriter, a photo- grapher and a five hour a night sleeper. I have learned also that it is impossible for the work to be done alone. With a faithful staff having a common goal, the editorship has truly been worth the headaches and the hours of time and effort. As I look back, the bad is overshadowed by the good, and I personally feel that our goal has been accomplished, that the ZEX1TII has captured the spirit of High Point College and in these terms is a success. This year we have tried to keep the ZENITH in pace with the new ideas and feeling we have seen develop on this campus. Throughout this year we have seen an improved Hi Po, the beginnings of a new form of student government, and the embryonic stage of a new spirit develop in the students on our campus. We have endeavored to make the ZENITH a personal publication. The ' 61-62 ZENITH is vour words, your pictures, one year of your life. I hope you have enjoyed your venture through Autumn, Winter, and Spring. The Editor 193 Faculty and Staff Adams, Miss Louise Allen, Mi. Joe C. Allied, Mr. J. H. Bartlett, Dr. Helen R.
