This is what makes it worthy of its name. This personality, this in- dividuality should be deeply rooted in its phil- osophy and objectives, and revealed through its actions. . . . ? Β£$ - .. svce. at SPA r he small, church-related liberal arts insti- tution is best equipped to provide a quality education for leadership, as it is based on an abundant freedom of human mind, to explore and expose every subject susceptible to its contemplation. Leaders are made not born. Those who will rise to strategic posi- tions of leadership and responsibility will be those who are capable of pro- ducing through other people rather than through technical skills alone and those who are products of the versatility of student life. r he stimulation of events and occasions adds the lively movement, excitement, and vivid splash to our campus, which is embroid- ered by the many phases of the students ' environment. All this β of which the leader is a product. vβ ducatton for nothing more than an immediate vocation is a costly waste; for we are a part of all that we have seen, heard, and met β the joys and sorrows, the laughs and disappoint- ments, the meaningful and the depressive. Accepting as its fundamental purpose the task of preparing leaders for our exciting tomorrow, U , -4 ft % l Higfl Point College dedicates itself to this end. 3a6!e of Contents Administration 14 Classes 35 0rgani3af ions 86 Qreeks 138 Athletics 174 deputes 210 Advertisements 256 i Administration Faculty Staff HIGH POINT COLLEGE 1960 THE FIRST FELLOW CITATIONS Mrs. Myrtle H. Wood Our world of today demands that we be persons who possess strong minds, great hearts, true faith, and above all else, ready hands. It is in our beloved teacher that we find all of these attributes. Each student who has been one of her fold can never forget the class lectures, the office conferences, and the many on the spot conversations just outside the classroom. Her concern, her desire for knowledge, her willing hands, her wise counsel, and her open heart will long be remembered by many students at High Point College. We admire her uniqueness, her love of students, and her friendliness to all. For this and much more, we respectfully and humbly dedicate this book to DR. HELEN R. BARTLETT DEDICATION Our President As you complete your college careers and move forward to begin the real adventure of life, let me wish for you every success and the fulfillment of all your dreams of days past. To be sure the world into which you are now finding your way may not prove to be a very hospitable one. This is an age of technology and science, dominated by the incantations of digital computers β and sur- rounded by insecurity, fear, and tension. But never forget, you are living at the junction of one of the great periods of his- tory when your choices will shape the future for good or evil. You will have the oppor- tunity to help supply the morality and ethics to this world of technology β and make a paradise on earth rather than a hell on earth. This is your real task No generation has had a greater purpose, a more challenging opportunity, or more serious responsibility. As Montaigne wrote of his period of war, famine, and disease Let us thank fortune that has not made us life in an effeminate, idle, and languishing age May God be with you and guide you. Day in and day out always find these two busy as beavers , their service to perform. Weekends, too, will find them faithfully executing their tasks with a spring in their step, a smile on their faces, and cheery hello to all. It is very unusual for the actions of any two persons to affect so many of our students, but despite the long hours, the hard work, the many obligations and expectations of those whom they serve, our tribute is rightfully received At breakfast, lunch, and dinner all students are made aware of the efforts of those of whom we speak . . . tasty food, colorful combinations, choice variety, even down to the added treat of peanut butter and jelly . Yes, we, the students pay our tribute to those who out of concern, understand- ing, and love have won first place in all our hearts Mr. and Mrs. L. G. It is the product of inter-dependence, co-oper- ation, patience, discrimination, foresight, sin- gle-mindedness, clerical aptitude, artistic sen- sibility, and paper The 1961 Zenith was planned as a work that would sum up one year in the life of the undergraduate. It is hoped that this edi- tion shows not only an understanding of the task that lay before the staff, but also the insight and ability to put across the tradi- tions, events, and places β the memories of H.P.C. As we of the Zenith Staff lock the door of our office for the last time and turn the key over to our successors, we have a feeling of mixed emotions β happy that the work is finished, a little sad at the thoughts of a phase of our life at H.P.C ending The sad thoughts, however, are brightened by the prospects of partly reliving our days as we look back over the pages of this yearbook If in years to come, you can derive some pleasure from looking through this book, then our efforts and work will not have been in vain And now this volume of the Zenith will take its place in the library beside previous editions, those from 1924 to 1960 . . . The year began with a blast and proved quite interest- ing as our founder, P. Murphy returned to traverse our campus and strengthen our scholastic average Also, we were witnesses to brothers J. K. ' s, Mike ' s, and Bill ' s weddings and saw brothers Dale and Carroll become pinned and engaged Feeling the need for some slight fortification against the enemy, we staged a rush program and began a new era. The year proved quite successful for parties. The two most outstanding were the Initiation Ball and the White Rose that was held again at Myrtle Beach Our congratulations go to Brothers Brown, Short, and Yates who made Who ' s Who and Ten Top Seniors, and Brothers Short, Buchanan, and Pledge Fallin who repre- sented the fraternity on the basketball court. Then, as the year concludes itself, we again beckon the yell of Rodent and head for our convention headquarters at the beach. With the troops making the scene in large numbers, we realize that the convention will be a tremen- dous success!! Managing the top position on Campus was left to Brother Vance Davis who was President of the Student Government He was capably assisted by Brother Jimmy Edwards, the Vice-Presi- dent of the S.G.A. All take off their hats to these two boys However, these two officers do not complete the list Broth- er Ted Brazzell was president of the Sophomore Class, Brother Charles Price, president of the Concert Choir, and Brother Richard Chuck Miller, president of the college band. In addition Sig Eps were fortunate in having Brothers Raby, Trevarrow, Miller, and Lewis as members of the House of Representatives Three brothers were chosen to Who ' s Who Among American Colleges and Universities They were Brothers Vance Davis, Charles Price, and Ken Sullivan Brother Davis -was also elected to the Ten Top Seniors The Sig Ep social life was by no means dead. Two rolick- ing trips to the mountains, several informal parties, climaxed by the Sig Ep Ball and Spring Formal kept the N C Etas alive socially Sig Eps enjoyed a good year of intramural sports, espe- cially in football where they took the fraternity champion- ship. The brothers actively participated in all other intra- mural events. The history of Sigma Phi Epsilon has not ended Time does not stand still for the Sig Eps They are ever develop- ing, ever expanding their qualities of character and leader- ship to meet the challenges of o fast moving world We pay tribute to those who have gone before us The pace is set, the task is ours as we move forward as brothers in Sigma Phi Epsilon Zone Daniel Jim Hightower Thomas Kimball Frank Lewis Jerry Murdock, Secretary Don Reber Larry Rudisill Tommy Skidmore, Vice President George Smith Sammy Taylor Dave Workman Bill Zalles Row 1: George Bean, Leonard Chisholm, Ray Fraley. Aided by Joe Guzinski as rush chairman, the TEKES rolled through a top rush stag party and date dance and came out with nineteen new pledges With our six returning pledges we had twenty-five of the finest pledges on campus The Christmas dance was the highlight of the month of De- cember After the Founder ' s Day Ball in January with North Carolina State as host chapter, the TEKES set their eyes on the highlight of every year, the Red Carnation Ball The ball is held in honor of our alumni and the fast growing Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity In May of Nineteen sixty, the Gerald D Rowe Outstanding Brother Award went to David Workman and the TEKE Outstanding Pledge Award went to Frank Lewis The climax of the banquet and dance was the crowning of Mrs Betty Myers as Sweetheart of Delta Kappa Chapter of Tou Kappa Epsilon Another brotherhood-binder in all fraternities is the ath- letic side On our varsity basketball team eleven TEKES started the season In intramural playing, T K E has pushed aside its rivals and looks strong in a finish for All Campus trophy On campus, frater Donald Reber was selected to Who ' s Who and on the national fraternity scene Tau Kappa Epsi- lon strengthened its hold on the number one position m num- ber of chapters with one hundred sixty-eight and the largest active membership As a fitting crown for the top national fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon Notional Fraternity is number one in scholarship β ' Charles Carroll, Vice President Jim Corley Bill Davidson Gary Davis Tom Dean, Treasurer Haywood Edmundson Gene Gresham Ralph Helsabeck Len Lewin, President Bill McKinley, Secretary Walter Schenck Don Schmitt Dale Spinnett John Tuttle 69 Row : John Adams, Tommy Arnette, Don Ber- ner. The publication is The Rattle of Theta Chi . Leonard Lewin President β -o Theta Chi Fraternity on the campus of High Point Col- lege has had a long and rich background The present chapter originated from a local fraternity known as Epsilon Eta Phi, the first fraternity on this campus In the year of 1954 on December 11th, Epsilon Eta Phi became installed as the Epsilon Alpha Chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity. It was at this time that we accepted the ideals and purposes of this great national fraternity which are exemplified in The Creed of Theta Chi: I believe in Theta Chi, traditions and its ideals. Born of sturdy manhood, nurtured by resolute men, ennobled by high and sacred purpose, it has taken its place among the educational institu- tions of America as a promoter of knowledge, an advancer of culture and a builder of character. It inspires true friendship; teaches Truth, Temper- ance; extols virtue; exacts harmony; and extends a helping hand to all who seek it I believe in the primacy of Alma Mater, in the usefulness of Fra- ternity, in its influence and its accomplishments and I shall do all in my power to perpetuate its ideals, thereby serving my God, my country, and my fellow-man . New North State Champs A Team Victory β By BILL HODGES Enterprise Sports Editor VMCA GYMNASIUM, Lexing. ton β It was a time-worn esti- mate, but you couldn ' t help but believe thai High Point ' s Virgil Vow meant it when he called last night ' s victory by the Pan- thers in the North State Confer- ence tournament ' a ' team vic- tory. I ' d have !o call it a team victory all the way, said Yow h newsmen aft- . .is. The boys played it to win. and they played it un- trip to Indiana last winter in search of basketball talent. A pair of Hoosier freshmen, forward Phil Garrison and guard Roy Bartlett. paced the Pan- ther 3ttack with 27 and 26 poin ' s respectively. In addition, they were the chief scorers for the Panthers in the tournament. Garrison collected 83 points, tops for all tournament players, and Bartlett scored 52. YOU MIGHT not know it, Yow, but those two boys are only on half scholarships. I went to Indiana looking for a ning this one, said the veteran HPC mentor. They just got to- gether near (he end of the sea- son and decided maybe they weren ' t playing quite as well as they might, and they put on a tremendous show of desire to accomplish this. This team has as much de- sire or more than any I ' ve ever coached. We had a champion- ship team in 1942 that perhaps had as much desire, but they were all veterans and far more experienced ballplayers. This team tonight probably did mote with desire than any other an average of 27.7 points per game and collected 40 rebounds in the three games, tops for the tourney in both departments. Phi! probably didn ' t have to work quite as hard tonight for iiis points as he did the first two night.-. Yow said. Our tea m- work wa- going well, and we were feeding that ball to him. Early in the game, they (Atlan- tic Christian! were guarding Phil and we had Joe (Guzinski) open. Joe started hitting, and they couldn ' t guard Garrison qtute as closely. P. C. took the floor against a strong Appala- chian team which had previously defeated them by more than twenty points. Alumni Gym was packed with many homecoming fans who, like most of us, expected H. P. C. to lose another game. Little did they know that they were about to witness an fi. P. C. victory that was to light such a spark that the Purple Panthers went on to win their remaining regular season games and the coveted North State Conference Title. After defeating the Unhappy Appies on February 11, the Panthers won over A. C. C. on February 13, E. C. C. on February 15, and Lenoir Rhyne on February 18. Following those games came the North State Tournament in which we defeated Elon, Appalachian, and A. C. C. to win the title. This marked our first tournament title since 1954. Enough credit cannot be given to Coach Virgil Yow and his boys. In Coach Yow ' s own words, It was a team effort which won the tournament for us. It is in order that we point out the out- standing play of Phil Garrison, Butch Bartlett, Bill Fallin, Joe Guzinski, and Jackie Short in the last seven games. Especially to be noted is Phil Gar- rison ' s tournament play in which he was top scorer, top rebounder, and voted most valuable player of the tournament by various sports writers. In short, congratulations Purple Panthers! We are looking forward with much enthusiasm to the 1962 Basketball Season. Truly a Great Team in Action Baseball With heavy hitters and fast fielders, this year ' s Panther team will be looking forward to a winning season. β ._J I V- β β’ ty-r r m v β - β’ j ., β - .
