SUE JACKSON Co-Editor BARBARA AYERS Co-Editor MELL BUSBIN Business Manager . .. • ' Published hij THE STUDENTS of HIGH POINT COLLEGE JtediMjtioti Just as the average student is not the A student, So is the average teacher not an A teacher. Only a few teachers can we students honestly designate as exceptional teachers. They gain this distinction by qualifications of fairness, friendliness, sympathy, genuine concern for students, For devotion to their profession beyond its actual demands, a disinclination to shirk responsibility, a thorough grasp of subject matter and an interesting and vital manner of presenting it, a way of making us as students realize the importance of learning. For being truly professional minded and student minded. These are the teachers who demand both respect and love. One teacher whom the senior class believes to possess these qualities in the highest degree is a person we consider an A+ teacher and an A+ human being. With gratitude and affection we, the senior class of 1959, dedicate our yearbook to DR. FRANCES E. MULDROW. DR. FRANCES E. MULDROW Page Five WE i , ««W «.. tOkm to tk ieuwfu of meet itieri tkaqk 3 immott, top . . . JZmmbmce o VkfUjb 7 Mt . . . Page Seven The mind ' s eye sees the campus green; The mind ' s ear hears a sound serene . . . The familiar silver singing of the chimes drifts across the spacious campus lawns as students saunter through the dusk in groups and pairs. The sight and sounds of the campus, our homc-for-four-years, will be a memory locked in our hearts. The rapid bidding in a student center bridge game, the high-pitched yell of a Panther fan, the gay call of Thirty-All from the tennis courts ... the lyrics differ; the melody is the same. The song is youth . . . enjoying itself. Page Eight In the reverent stillness of the chapel we bow our heads in a wordless supplication, and our hearts are locked together in the unity of our common prayer, our common quest. Committee meetings . . . club activities . . . not, as some charge, another type of recrea- tion for students, but another form of learning, the basis of the student life— the process by which High Point College builds good citizens for tomorrow. A casual clasp of hands, a teasing word, an inobtrusive message from one pair of eyes to another . . . and beneath these simple signs the breathless mystery of one heart reaching out to another. The campus rings with the melody of their laughter, the merry music of young people in love. Suddenly or slowly a teacher ' s words or a phrase from a book, recalled and transmuted in our minds reveals to us for an instant the process of education— not as thousands of divergent facts and ideas to be memorized and assimilated, but as a unified and inter- woven pattern. Thus we begin to learn. Page Ten We arise in the hushed hours of the dawn and steal silently to the elubrooms to organize, synthesize, memorize. We drink dark coffee and nod over our books in the still watches of the night. Campus frolicking abates examinations near. as Afterwards we wonder, was it real and tangible?— the anticipation, the mystery, the thrill of fraternity initiation— Ah, but it was a symbol of values that were real-fellowship, friendship, a true brotherhood, not of words but of acts and deeds. •► V .If Roommate, fraternity brother, sorority sister, sweetheart, teacher, friend— such little words to symbolize the relationships which give meaning to our college experience— Our favorite lessons are those which teach us, at work and at play, the fundamental principles of group living. ■■■■■■■■ ■■■■■■■ ■ ■■■ ■■■■■B And suddenly, as on eagle wings, the years have flown, and we come to say good- bye, bound closest perhaps by the little things— the shared jokes, the midnight talk fests, all the helpful, hilarious, ignoble, dra- matic, wonderful experiences we shared which are forever a part of our Remembrance of Things Past. He is concerned with such serious matters as practice teaching, getting a job, applying for graduate school, and marriage. The epitome of erudition to the underclassmen, he sometimes scandalizes them by indulging in bits of foolish clowning. He debates with professors the God-given perogative of students to fritter away their senior year, and he holds his breath until the final exam grades appear. One day lie treads the aisle for the last time, and diploma in hand, he steps out to lace the future with nostalgia for the days that are past and great expectations for the days that an ' ahead. r i. He enjoys taking most courses in his major subject. He attends committee meetings, engages in club activities, and dates frequently. Despite the pressure of these duties, he always has time for frivolity. Six hours of sleep, he dis- covers, is not always necessary. He begins frantically to compare the number of his hours with the number of his quality points. He buys wedding presents and watches apprehensively the thinning ranks of his class. The school year of 1958-59 has been an importan t one in the life of the High Point College Student Government Association. This has been an eventful year in terms of activity, and it is our hope that it will also be remembered as a year of change, and thus a year of progress. Early in the first semester a new constitution, providing for a bi-cameral legislature, was prepared by a special Constitution Committee, and was passed unanimously by the student body. In the second semester two student parties were formed on our campus. The parties were organized to stimulate student interest, and to encourage competition in student elections. Also during the second semester a code of student law was accepted by the legislature, and our judicial system was revised. The Executive Committee was also re- vised, adding the day and dormitory presidents to that committee. The Executive Committee, The Student Senate, The Student House of Representatives, and the Judiciary Council have tried to make ours an effective Student Government . . . a workable organization that is worth while and beneficial to the students. It is our hope that next year will be an im- provement and that the Student Government Association will continue to grow in function and activity, continually striv- ing for a better college community. The Judiciary Council is composed of ten members, two from each dorm, one from each class, and two from the day student council. From these ten the members select one person to act as Chief Justice. Members of the Student Government Constitution Committee were instrumen- tal in setting up the revision of the Constitution which was presented to the Student Legislature and ap- proved on Tuesday, October 21. The revision was presented and passed by the Student Body during Assembly Wednesday, October 29. Two major changes were made in the past con- stitution. In addition to concerts on campus and in the High Point vicinity, the band makes an extended tour each year. Another contribution to student enjoyment is the band ' s appearance at pep assem- blies and home basketball games. The second act is one of the funniest ever written for the current stage. Siege of Sit Tite Siege of Sit-tite — a unique treat— furniture produc- tion put to Musical Comedy by Dr. Lew Lewis, head of the Fine Arts Department. Dr. Lewis wrote the music, lyrics, and also a book. The play is about a furniture factory whose sales have been steadily declining. The nephew of the founder, who is dead, is seeking to gain control of the firm to pull it out of the slump. The first act takes place in the upholstery room. The second act is a television show sponsored by the company, and the third act occurs in a furniture exhibit. ! The Death of a Salesman TOWER PLAYERS OUTDO SELVES IN DEATH OF A SALESMAN The capabilities of the Tower Players of High Point College have never been more clearly evident than in their production of Arthur Miller ' s Death of a Salesman. ' Not since their production of Tennessee Williams ' ' The Glass Menagerie ' several years ago has High Point pre- sented such a theatrical opportunity. It was a rare and moving experience the Players presented on the stage of Memorial auditorium. The play centers around a mediocre traveling salesman, who has made himself believe that he is a great success in business. He tries to instill these false ideas of success into the minds of his two athletic sons. His wife believes in him and tries to tie the bond between father and sons. In 1949, the play won the Pulitzer Prize, and Drama Critic ' s Circle Award. Page One Hundred Twenty «r T .- - ; f (J AJma Msrf m :« w. ine «u ' ■ ' .: r a wplk ritl Alma Mate . There in the sunlight, beneath the hidden cares of college life, is a white rose. Its petals are as white and pure as diamonds and its luster will remain a symbol throughout our lives. To you it is only a rose, to us, as Sisters of Kappa Delta, it is our heart. In its beauty our dear white rose seems to be a golden chalice held high where all our life ' s treasures lie. There, as in our hearts, will always remain deeply enfolded honor, beauty, truth, sisterly love, and fond memories of happy youth. These are the gifts given to us by our own Kappa Delta. There have been smiles and there have been tears, and the future surely holds many more. We, sisters, have shared both tears and smiles; together we shall face our tomorrow. There is no fear for our love is as a radi- ant shaft of light and no matter what the silken threads of darkness hold, this love will guide us. To a Kappa Delta her sister ' s smile is a priceless gift, for her happiness is our happiness. Her tears are shared as loyally and sincerely as her smile. Her honor is our honor and whatever befalls her we shall stand ever faithful by her side. Our heart is in a rose laden with happiness, and ever striving for that which is honorable, beautiful, and highest. My heart is my sister ' s heart for we are Sisters of Kappa Delta. In the fall of 1956, the NDM Club at High Point became a colony of Delta Sigma Phi and in the fol- lowing spring, we were initiated into Delta Sigdom and received our chapter charter. Since becoming a national fraternity, the true spirit of brotherhood has been made a reality, sharing our experiences together and helping each other. 1958-1959 will always stand out as being a highly ac- tive year for us— the National Convention was held in Manhatten, Kansas, in the fall before school opened— the party on Blue Rid«e Parkway— Snow King Wienberry moved to Virginia- Swing Dance Party at YMCA— Stag rush party followed by date rush dance with the Dukes of Dixie— Party at Wcinberry ' s new home— Charlie gives Lee a Dia- mond and she is serenaded— Pledges worked hard— Brothers and pledges build a 1500 lb. Dear Readers, Iota-Phi would like to share its many memories with you for the past year. Before the opening of sehool, Brothers Charles Dyson and C. B. Crook hit the dust in matrimony. Losing pins during the summer were Brothers Doug Squires, Crowell Pope, and Bill Thompson. The year was off to a gung-ho start with a trip to the country and our annual steak fry at our prominent advisor ' s farm. Freshman orientation over and haek to the hooks. After much deliberation and discussion, the Clown-Faculty Baskethall Game was presented. Great time by all Brothers and Pledges. Another Brother bites the dust and gets married, Frank Kimbro. A bouncing baby boy came to the home of Brother Hagg Bowman. Joy! Joy! Joy! The well-coached and drilled football team finished in second place, losing one game, in the close competitive Intramural league. Whoops!!! Rush week, twenty-three outstanding men pledged. A quick trip to a new and secluded rock at a big college and slick paint job by pledges. Reavis, Barbour, Crye and brothers still clinging to pins— good luck, men. Trophy from National Headquarters for National Publication Award. Another big Christmas Party with our sister sorority, the Phi Mil ' s. Christmas goodbyes were celebrated at a stag party at local Legion Hut. Studv halls for pledges. Pledge initiation dance comes along pretty quick and is held at local Country Club. We gain much recognition on campus: Charles Dyson and Charles Watson in Who ' s Who ; Bobby Yates, president of sophomore class; Reavis, Routh selected junior marshals; Charles Watson and Bones Mann keep Dorm quiet, Charles Johnson and Harold Wright, big men in Student Legislature; Henry Groom, president freshman class; Charles Dyson, president senior class; Harold Wright, king pin in MSF. Trips, as usual, dominated the summer for us as a Fraternity. Brothers make trip to Greenville, N. C, for East Carolina Col- lege to install 55 men as a colony. Men journeyed to Washington and Lee University for Colonial Conclave. Canada was seen by trip to Montreal, Quebec, Canada, for the National General Assembly. Up comes Mike Flanagan vs. Fuller. Charles Johnson still is hobbling around on one leg. Brother Martin empties room on week-end for quiet trip to Mooresville. Reavis plays tennis and golf, Short plays basketball and Wright all intramural. Another year comes to close for Lamba Chi. With West- ern Carolina having its best season in several years, East Carolina coming fast at the end of the season, and always tough Lenoir Rhyne continuing to win, the Panther freshman-studded squad had a tough time sticking in the upper bracket. Last year ' s hardwood edition was hard hit by graduation and Coach Yow had to begin a rebuilding compaign this season. Employing a squad with Cap- tain Steve Afendis and Ken Williams the only seniors, Coach Yow should give Panther basketball hopefuls something to look forward to in the coming seasons. Next year High Point should be considered a definite threat to take the conference title. Danny Sewell, who was named the most Valuable Player in District 26 and who was named to the All-State Squad along with other honors, has one more year of eligibility, and it should be his greatest yet. First nut: Tommy Skidmoro. Willard Formyduval, Jack Short, Zane Daniel, Chalmous Schrest, Manager C. C. Freeman. Second row: Captain Steve Afendis, Wolfy Unger, Wayne Cheek, Ken Williams, Danny Sewell, Joe Guzinski, Coach Virgil Vow. ' flSHPOH ' .A Tournament The High Point Purple Panthers made it to the semi-final round of the North State Conference Tournament before bowing out to the powerful Catamounts of Western Carolina. With Danny Sewell and Captain Steve Afendis leading the way, the fourth ranked Panthers rolled over a weak Elon club in the opening round by a score of 67 to 49. Leading by only four at halftime, High Point broke the game open in the first 10 minutes of the second half and coasted home to victory. A large delagation journeyed from High Point to Lexington two nights later to see if the Panthers could pull an upset over Swede Frauson and Com- pany. The Purple and White battled on even grounds with the Catamounts for the first 20 min- utes and held a slim 32 to 31 halftime lead. With Steve Afendis paving the way, the charged-up Panther quintet gamely tried to stay with the power- ful Catamount club, but faltered in the final five minutes of the game and fell to a 76 to 65 defeat. Overall-power and superior rebounding proved to be the turning point as Western Carolina moved on to take the championship against Catawba. Jr. Varsity This year, under the leader- ship of Mr. Chuck Hartman, the Junior Varsity completed a satisfactory season. Sparked by a fine offense and a never- say-die spirit, the Baby Pan- thers showed up well against all competition. Paving the way for the team throughout the season were such boys as Don Simmons, Ben Wynd- ham, and Jerry Webster. The fine ability that all of these boys showed this season should make of these boys good material for future var- sity editions of the Purple Panthers. Baseball First row: Head Coach, Dr. Jack Netcher; Assistant Coach, Mr. Chuck Hartman; Wolfy Linger; Captain, Charlie McCorkle, Willard Formydu- val; Darrell Smith; Bobby Boles. Second row: Gary Thornberg; Zane Daniel; Ed Hughes; Don Simmons; Jerry Webster; Jerry Koontz. Third row: Joe Guzinski; George Ivey; Tex Flippin; Gil Buck; Corbin Cherry; Kirby Joyce; Gerald Brooks; Phil Blair. Dr. Jack Netcher, Head Baseball Coach and Athletic Director, in his second year at the helm of the Panther diamond squad has begun, with the able assistance of Chuck Hartman, to build High Point up as a power in baseball competition in the North State Conference. This year ' s team was built around Charlie McCorkle and Darrell Smith, the only returning lettermen. The baseball diamond was given a new face this past summer and new dugouts were constructed. Ac- cording to Dr. Netcher, High Point ' s field is now in about as good shape as any in the conference. Tennis Dr. Arthur LeVey, McCulloch Hall dorm counsellor and professor of Romance languages, was added this year to the athletic department in the capacity of tennis coach. LeVey faced a tough job when he entered this tennis season. He had to begin on a tremendous job of rebuilding in order to put the Panthers in contention for a top spot in the North State Conference. Tony Adams and Tommy Loftis were the only returnees from last year ' s racquet squad. Bill Huegele, runner-up in singles play in the conference last year, was lost through graduation and was the hardest per- son to replace. Preston Williams, a new-comer, took over the number one position on the team. NUMBER ONE MAN PRESTON WILLIAMS First row: Harold Wright. Tommy Loftis. Tony Adams, Preston Williams. MILE RELAY TEAM: Mickey Dean, Tommy Han- ner, Pete Sturm, George Smith. The Panther Thinelads, who placed fourth in conference competition last year, this season hoasted a much stronger team. The only major loss from the team last year was Harold Slick Sykes, the conference record holder in the discus. Pacing ths season ' s cinder squad were Mickey Dean, undefeated last year in the half-mile; Dick Vert, ace distance runner; Tommy Hanner, the 400-yard pacer; and Jack Short, the top field events man. Supporting these were Tommy Skidmore, Danny Sewell, and such newcomers as Pete Sturm, Greg Houghton, and Marion Suitt. DR. GILMAN HERTZ Coach   . . • - ■: ■ •.., ■■,.;■■. ■i. 3.. -.•■■ ' ' • . -A. CAPTAIN BILL RUTLEDGE Golf Golf, in the rebuilding stages this year, has had a tough time remaining a contender in the conference. It has remained through such hardships an integral part of the inter- collegiate program at High Point. Although it is low at the present, with many fine new prospects on hand, it should definitely im- prove. The linkmen should soon become top contenders in conference play. Bob Veasey. (Not pictured): Ross Wingo, Marion Suitt, Mickey Dean. ■ This year the intramural program has been a very good one. The teams have been fairly evenly matched with no one dominating all of the sports. The dog-fight for the All-Sports trophy should go on until the last sport has been completed. At the present, Lambda Chi Alpha and Tau Kappa Epsilon are battling it out for the top position with only one point separating them. Undefeated teams have been numerous this year. Tau Kappa Epsilon won the football championship with an undefeated team, Lambda Chi won the volleyball championship in like manner, and Pi Kappa Alpha ran up an undefeated record in basketball. With the Softball season com- ing up, along with several minor sports, the battle for top points should prove to be interesting. Who can say who will win the All-Sports trophy? -sAjm ' ••  ♦ ; ♦ ♦ ' , ..♦v. ■ ' .-. •: - .♦.■«« ••.- Under the able leadership of Miss Nancy Hood, the women ' s intramural program has been greatly improved. This year marked the advent of an extensive sports program for women. Next year, if all goes according to plans, several new sports will be added to the sports agenda. Dominating play thus far in the season have been very strong teams from the Phi Mu Sorority and the Independents. Phi Mu finished strong to take the basketball championship in a one day tournament. The Inde- pendents will probably have the strongest softball team. MISS NANCY HOOD Women ' s Intramural Director Women ' s Intramurals if Page One Hundred Seventy-Six i 4 • k ftt T T E ! terasi 1. Shattering all previous records of attendance, many alumni attended the homecoming activities on February 14. Dur- ing alumni registration in the morning campus tours were conducted by members of the local chapter of the High Point College Alumni Association. Accord- ing to custom Dr. and Mrs. Cooke held open house during the afternoon. Many alumni and their families attended the annual dinner in the Harrison Hall Cafeteria, over which Porter Hauser, president of the alumni association presided. Though disappointed by the loss of the game between High Point and Appa- lachian, fans nevertheless enjoyed the half-time ac- tivities of the game which included scenes from the Tower Players ' production, Girl Cra y, presentation of various awards, and the crowning of lovely Sandra Parnell, Homecoming Queen. ■ m Agjj .V.
