Percy Elliott Lindley was actively associated with High Point College from its be- ginning until his death, and his sudden and unexpected passing on October 9, 1952, left the entire college family stunned and saddened. Dr. Lindley, over the years, served as Dean of the Faculty, Dean of Students, Head of the Department of Religious Education, and Director of Religious Activities. He or- ganized the first college band and served as its director for several years. He had a part in setting up and advising every religious organization on the campus, and as chairman of the lecture and assembly committees, he brought to the college and community many programs of culture and entertainment. He was an ordained minister of the Methodist Church, and served as pastor of several churches. He was in constant demand as a speaker at churches, schools, and civic clubs throughout the state. Through his books he served a still wider public. Dean Lindley, as he was always affectionately called, fulfilled completely the character of Chaucer ' s parson : But Cristes loore, and his apostles twelve He taughte, but first he folwed it hymselve. His winsome Christian character, his sincerity and honesty, and his kindness and under- standing were evident in classroom, pulpit, and private conference. He was never too busv to listen generously and graciously to any one who needed help, advice, or sympathy. He loved everybody and every cause to which he attached himself. A tireless worker and student himself, he was the symbol of authority on all phases of college life. These Chris- tian qualities, along with a soft voice and the delightful sense of humor for which he was noted, made him the perfect teacher. Through all the years no student left High Point College without having come under his influence. He has left a place in our college that no one can fill. We shall miss him, but his spirit will live on here on the campus and in pulpit and classroom wherever High Point College students are found. To the memory of Dean Lindley, Christian gentleman, faithful friend, and great teacher, we, the editors and staff, affectionately and sadly dedicate the 1953 Zenith. %, WRENN MEMORIAL LIBRARY STUDENT CENTER FOREWORD On the pages of this volume are recorded some of the High Point College happen- ings in nineteen hundred and fifty-three. Here are memories, pictorial and printed, depicting the general characteristics of campus living, socially, intellectually, and spiri- tually. Should the whole volume represent a year, each sec-lion a month, each page a day, each picture and each printed word the hours and minutes, they could not approach the bigness of our hearts and minds as we recall the memories ot this year, hut they do repre- sent some of the highlights of our most serious contemplations and our most joyous ex- periences. Student Government Good is done by degrees; therefore, how- ever large or numerous the responsibilities placed before it, the Student Government has taekled them one by one with the hope of accomplishing the greatest amount oi good for the greatest number of people. It is true that the Student Government has not reached perfection, but in the struggle toward per- fection the desire ol its members has been to strengthen the character ol the school and to give stability to the student body. We have mutually shared work and play, joys and sorrows, failures and successes. We shall not soon forget these beautiful friend- ships nor the events which made our four years at High Point College a rich experi- ence. It is, therefore, with mixed emotions of joy and sadness that we leave these halls. We are beginning a new phase of an exciting adventure, and already we feel the pressure of great responsibilities to a restive society. These creative years have provided a founda- tion, and we hope that, as we achieve some measure of success in our individual lives, we shall be able to reflect praise and honor upon our alma mater. Our travel has taken us along many interesting highways of achievements, and we have often found it hard work to climb the hill of advancements with disappointments lurking around the sharp turns in the road. We can now smile together, however, knowing in our hearts that we have covered three-fourths of the distance of our academic journey. After much hair pulling and brain racking, we are proud to present to you the 1953 Zenith. It wasn ' t easy worrying over appointments, drawing and redrawing pages in the dummy, begging for snapshots, waiting for proofs to re- turn, and doing the thousand and one other jobs that go into making up an annual, but we feel it was worth all the effort and hard work. Reggie was buried on top of the world ( at the Zenith office in the attic of the library) most of the time with pencil and paper bringing his ideas to life. His assistant, Helen Coltrane, worked herself into an appende ctomy, but shared her ideas with the staff from her hospital bed. Betty Lou brought her artistic ability into the drawings for the main pages. Audrey, assisted by Nancy and Edith, was busy at the typewriter day and night, but was still able to joke with Barbara and Lib as they labored with the features. Charles and Kent followed up the sports to make our activities com- plete. One could not help running into Abbey at every turn with his camera, doing that all-im- portant job of taking pictures for the Zenith. Mr. Arthur Paschal Director of Athletics 71 ■Basketball Outlook for 1952- 1953 ' On paper, the outlook for the Purple Panthers looks very dim for the ' 52-53 season; there are no great individual stars like Ed Sueta or Jessie Joyce to lead the team to honors. But the hardest thing in the world would he to convince Coach Hob Davis and the players that the paper tells the true story! What they lack in individual stars the cur- rent Panther squad is planning to make up in teamwork, hustle, and a fighting spirit. Fighting for the forward positions as the season opens are: Tony Lisk, 6 ft. 4 inch junior; Harold Sykes, 6 ft. 4 inch sophomore; Billy Hicks, 6 ft. 2 inch senior; Conrad West, 6 ft. junior; and 6 ft. 3 inch freshman, Paul Wesseler. Sykes and kisk now seem to hold the edge for the forward posi- tions. The center positions will probably be fdled by big Howard Alexander, freshman, 6 ft. 7 inches tall and weighing 270. Sophomore 6 ft. 5 inch Boh Popp and freshman 6 ft. 6 inch Bill Simpson, will be giving Alexander a fight for the center spot. The Panthers will lie stronger at the guard spots this year with Captain Bobby Davidson, Sonny Thornton, Ken Frazier, all letlermen who returned to the college, and transfer Kent Moseley fighting for .starting positions. Since the team is composed almost entirely of inexperienced men — only one senior on the team —the Panthers are looking forward to a great team for next year, but who knows, maybe this will be the year! 73 1 ti Lisk rebounds against the ' V Bobb) Davidson leaps for two against W.C.T.C. The J952 intramural softball season wound up with a tight neek-to-neek finish. The EPO. who tied for fourth place with the EHO, walloped them and went on to heat the NDM for the softball championship. Ed Sueta. the star pitcher and captain for the EPO charges, belted a brace of home runs to aid the winners in their brilliant victory. The 1952 intramural football season started off with a hang with a hard charging NDM team leading the way. The NDM team seemed to have that needed spark in every game to carry it to a hard earned championship. After vainly trying to cope with the champions, the ITK ' s wound up in second place. The 1952 intramural hasketball teams look fast and seem to he evenly matched. This should prove to he a thrilling season for the basketball fans. Last year the ITK won the Fraternity League Championship, and the Travelers won the Inde- pendent League Championship. Then in an excit- ing playoff contest between these two clubs, the Travelers won the intramural basketball cham- pionship. Each player on the championship team was awarded a trophy. Thanks to the student participation in these in- tramural contests, the morale of the activities on the High Point College campus has grown and developed along with the institution itself. 80 First Five Track SECOND PLACE-NORTH STATE CONFERENCE 1952 BROAD JUMP Sonny Thornton Tennis Carlos Horcasitas Mike Reyes John Hall NORTH STATE CHAMPIONS Cheerleaders Patsy White Jane Lathrop Pat Gunter Marie Essa Don Puntch Patsy Buzhardt President Nancye Clifton Vice-President nn VonCannon Secretary Frankie Goad Treasurer Eleanor Clapp Intramural Manager Co-eds at High Point College interested in ath- letics are organized into the Women ' s Athletic Association under the guidance of Miss Ellen Philheck.
